Been on ebay, that guy is a little crazy on his price. Another ebayer has been auctioning them and he is from Texas too. I want some of these but will wait until my dealer gets them.

These ratchets look awesome! Hopefully they work as well as they look. If I wasn't loaded up with Snap On's, I would be buying a couple of the new Mac's.

Here are some pictures next to a Dual 80 F80. The Mac feels a lot like the dual 80 to me. The handle on the Mac feels thicker. Not sure which one I like better yet. Both the Mac 90 tooth and Snap-on dual 80 are very nice. The handle on the Mac might be a touch longer too.

Thanks for the photos. Is it my imagination or is the head of the Mac a little thinner and not as wide as the Snap On or are they about the same?

rhastings80:

How does the weight of the new MAC 90 tooth ratchet compare to the weight/balance of the F80?

Thanks for sharing great photos:thumbup:

I weighed both the Mac 90 tooth and the Dual 80 on my postage scale. The Mac was 11.6 oz and the Snap-on Dual 80 was 10.6 oz. The Mac does seem to have a nice balance. The head on the Mac appears to be smaller then the Snap-on. As for thickness the Mac is thinner but if you factor in the square drive end or male extension its about the same. Again both the Snap-on and Mac are super nice.

I wonder what the strength difference between these ratchets is. I would think the coarser toothed snap on would have the edge. I would also think a ratchet this fine would be sensitive to grease and wear. Back drag has to be superior on the finer toothed ratchet. I wonder how the dual pawl compares.

I'd argue the opposite...finer toothed splines are typically stronger then the coarser versions (Axle shafts for example). On a ratchet, it would ultimately depend on the engagement area, and in both the dual 80 and this one, there seems to be more then enough engagement area. I'd be willing to put money on the fact that the square drive would shear off before the splines would give.

Played with the new MAC 18" 3/8 90 tooth flex head yesterday. It feels awesome! Made in USA. I am going to pick one up next time my sales rep returns. I have 5 or 6 older Mac ratchets, I think they are all imported and I'm not overly impressed with any of them. As a matter of fact, half of them are just plain junky. I thought I would never buy a MAC ratchet again until now. I tried to find a pic online quick but couldn't find one.

Anyone else buy one yet?

From those pictures the mac looks like a raw forging inside the ratchet? With the exception being the machined area the face plate screws down.

Is this typical of high end ratchets?

Pretty much as far as I know. I guess I'll post some results once I pick up the long flex head. MAC guy claimed they had sparked a lot of interest locally, he just got a shipment in this week apparently. It is supposed to be a very strong ratchet.

I'm sure the overall design was designed to compete with Snap-On's dual 80. I think MAC made a good move here, time will tell. I'm sure Matco will continue to peddle re-badged Gearwrench for some time. (Good stuff too... I just picked up an 88t 3/8 shorty flex head and have been using it a lot)

I got to see one in person the other day. It was a 3/8, long flex-head, with comfort grip. Initial impression was good.

Positives:
-working the directional lever was very smooth
-nice design overall with a comfortable grip (could be larger, imo)
-the flex action was consistently stiff through out the range of motion (I believe it's a friction fit)
-there's no annoying detents
-price is good

Negatives:
-back drag in the mechanism was higher than what I expected
-the rear cover plate wasn't completely flush against mating surface
-incredibly slow rate of product availability and lack of variety

Well my mac guy finally came in with a long *** 18" 3/8 flex. So i bought it and my opinion is what others have said. It has slightly more drag than a dual 80. The dual 80 is still cats ***. I asked the guy why no plans for a locking flex? His response...there is only so many ways to make a locking flex and all have a patent on them. Mac was late to the game.

Don't feel too bad, it could be worse, they could make a crappy locking flex like Snap-On.

I bought one today! 13" 3/8" drive flex head comfort grip! Beautifully made ratchet. My mac guy is awesome as well. This ratchet feels like twice the quality of a dual 80 to me. The flex is stiff but butter smooth which I cannot say for ANY of the dual 80 flex ratchets I've ever had. I am a big fan of the Matco 88 ratchets and have several but since they have been made of unobtanium the last year I bought the Mac. The head is about as thick as a dual 80 which is a bummer but it resembles more of a fine ratchet than a sledge hammer so points to the Mac!:rocker:
