Sweet!! Wait I thought you were going to do the electrical?

FYI using just 57 stone to make up the grade onto to the slab isn’t the best idea, it doesn’t compact and will displace and leave ruts over time. Fill it in first with some good fill sand or 21a stone or crusher run, something you can compact, and then just do the top few inches in 57 to match the rest of the driveway.

I'm planning to do most of the work but want the plans reviewed by a pro then he is going to make the final connections.

That was my plan for the garage entry. Will need all the extra stone for the rest of the driveway. That is what's happening over at mom & dad's.

Took 3 of these Thursday evening. The foggy one if from yesterday morning.

All the shingles are up and they were finishing up the ridge.34e67a11bbfe2163f88283aa8cbdfac6.jpg6133e459f1e081979135e565bfb1a1ff.jpg872b5b43ba9f528704bbf27bea8d6774.jpgffe4d44b02283b010f29fa00391fe663.jpg

Friday's progress...got the ridge vent done and started on siding.

Unfortunately, the forecast for this week is literally full of rain and finishing off with Hurricane Florence. So I don't expect there will be a lot of progress this week. And we'll see what happens with the hurricane if it hits us.f83011af0131baa736891462ca8df634.jpgb870f9dd8829d7626b4aebf78d812a7c.jpg035024d54ca42f801756df49d1999f59.jpg

Siding and trim are done. Next up are the gutters. The doors are in and they'll start installing those tomorrow. Should be "done" next week!

I say "done" because they'll still need to backfill around the concrete and dig the trench for the electrical over to the house. Depending on how the weather looks over the weekend, I may start nailing up some blue boxes...but I'll finally be able to unload all my stuff from the trailer and actually have access to my tools!!

They were gonna end up charging too much to bring in the fill material for the front of the garage so I'm gonna do that myself...one pickup load at a time. It's times like this when that load handler comes in handy. Has certainly paid for itself over time.2e062d1d4cbda8eeb82774da12e9323d.jpgd402d7683d3f230ff79d9cf52ca080b3.jpg201ab6da576b9daec4944b8e0edbdfe5.jpg0c3efb272a70a8374ac644973947af5d.jpg87a5aa3a2868d30c4bae121fec7a7c15.jpg6e225bf21053bbe1c93e76236a3b6e08.jpg4595701a02edb8f7765e14fa0dc94038.jpg4728741dc7a4cffae4e19fec6d0537ea.jpg

Probably. The back fill and digging for the electrical may be delayed due to the weather. We'll see.

The guys on site told Marie today that they would be able to do the gutters and install both doors tomorrow. But the main guy I've been talking to (unsure of his role in the company) said it would likely take two days to install both doors.

Bag: nice work on the garage and thanks for documenting the build with all the comments and pictures!!

did you have a budget in mind when you started and if you want to give a ballpark what a garage like this costs might be nice for others to know. or PM the members individually that ask because they are planning on building one.

you don't have your location in your profile, but sounds like you are in the path of Florance so hopefully the winds and rain won't damage you and your family and your cool new garage.

take care!!

We are in Southwest VA. The forecast has changed significantly over the last week so it shouldn't be too bad. We'll probably just have issues with flooding in the area. I'm kind of up on a hill so I hope we'll make it through without too much issue.

As far as cost, the original estimate was around $37,000. The surprise from the inspector that the slab had to be raised 6" from the original plan added quite a bit. Also keep in mind that this does not include electrical, insulation, or finishing inside. The original quote with all that was almost $50,000. So I'll be taking care of all that myself. I do have a friend who is an electrician. He is going to give me an estimate for just the electrical. He should be able to knock it all out in a day compared to me working on it over the course of a few weekends or something. So we'll see what that looks like and I'll make a decision. Either way, I'm going to start nailing up the boxes myself.

Insulation and osb will go up inside over time. The garage will certainly be cold this winter. Maybe it'll be done before next winter...

Yes. Yes it is.

I got all the electrical boxes up except the 6 exterior lighting boxes. Forgot to buy those and I wouldn't want to work on those in the rain anyway.

They also got the front gutter installed yesterday and they ran the conduit underground to the house so I can get electrical hooked up. Hopefully the wiring won't take too long.

Either the doors didn't come in yesterday or they chose to do the digging before the rain arrived so they wouldn't have to wait until after it passed to finish up. They can install the doors in the rain.dca3a293ead5f3b8294604e331c8b5e6.jpg17443caff09e0c28efc51323d393205f.jpgfdb62b26e7676c55315199708dce7671.jpg97b1881bb6ce952d2fc0725c4f2c7803.jpg

Wow, I’m really jealous. Looks great! That is almost the exact plan I want on our place.

Not sure if you plan on having music, T.V., or internet, but now would be a good time to run those lines and get them all hidden behind the wall as well. My brother just built a garage and he sure wishes he did.

That's my plan. Gonna put an antenna in the attic and drop the coax down next to one of the high wall outlets.

Back gutter and downspouts we're installed yesterday. The garage doors still haven't arrived. I've been told the supplier is blaming the hurricane for shipping delays. Who knows how true that is but certainly could be legitimate.

Got the electrical permit. Just need time to do rough in before the first inspection.

Rented a small excavator to dig for a retaining wall and move a bit of soil that was outside the scope of the builder. They'll put it in place for fill once everything is done.5af77aa3deab1593137c94a4d494b27f.jpg

Dude you should do what I was planning for the walls in Dad’s shop, insulation then OSB on the bottom half and pegboard on the top half. Would go quick just hang the sheets sideways and if you really want you could trim out the belt line and seams with pieces of 1x whatever. Rent an airless sprayer and paint everything white or light grey before moving a bunch of stuff into the shop. Boom, durable reflective walls and unlimited potential to hang **** wherever you want.

When you told me about that plan, I considered it. I'm just not a fan of the regular pegboard. It it's sturdy enough to hold something that would need to be screwed in so I would be restricted to using studs for heavier items. OSB all around would allow more flexibility. Plus I've seen too many pegboard hooks pull through with heavy stuff on them.

Regarding going ahead and getting it done before stuff gets moved in...I was hoping to be able to do that. However with the extra concrete and the whole setback issue, funds are tight and insulation and finishing will likely have to wait until we can save a bit more.

Well...the doors were supposed to arrive yesterday and start the install today but they still haven't arrived. The contractor installed the drains for the downspouts and took their trailer to get it out of the way. Doors and backfill are the only things they have left to do.

If the concrete guys don't throw away these forms when they come to do the fill, they may get bolted together and turned into shelves or work benches or something...0cb3ee1bea5500b5a3f025912b4b4258.jpg1090e8bc256fbd2bf1022cf4f3f6e277.jpg

Doors finally arrived on Friday. HUGE thanks to Colin for taking delivery and helping to get them down the driveway. They started the install this morning. Looks like they got the vertical tracks in and inserted the panels and that's about it. I would imagine they'll be functional by the end of the day tomorrow. They installed the fancy window trim in just the one door. Any opinions on using that or not?

Second HUGE thanks to Colin for helping me with the wiring yesterday. We got most of the 12/2 run. Still have some work to do up on a ladder and some different stuff to run for the 240 outlets and half switched outlets in the ceiling.ce937a7b2c0ef3d3ef5347a5a6e39167.jpge0c245c076b16a4ba0e683a7d742658a.jpgdae959b2be2d516251167c874b6d8784.jpg

So excited to see this coming together, gonna be an awesome shop for you! Glad your old lady agreed with me on the windows, looks great.

One thing on the doors, did you confirm they’ll clear your truck in the open position? If it’s too close it shouldn’t be hard to just put a high rise track kit on it.

They're almost done with the doors. They needed to get some more hardware. They also took out those decorative inserts. I think it looks much better without them. Should be done tomorrow. Then they just have some dirt to move and the contractor will be done.

No more progress on electrical other than getting some stuff purchased. Got all the wiring I need, the boxes for the exterior lights, breaker box, breakers, and all of the outlets & switches.734ca3090373114284217adb3a2cfcec.jpg17ce8c3834538627aa2e1a4c8ce136fb.jpg77b4b6e16f908f65c2b4f998636079dd.jpg

Doors are functional! I measured and the lowest point on the door when it is lifted is the little handle at the bottom of the door. Measures 6'10". The XM antenna on the truck is 6'6"...so we should be good.

They also got the dirt moved and graded today.

Got some photos of the wiring Colin and I pulled on Sunday.

Now the garage is lockable so I can actually leave tools in there while I'm working on it! That'll save like an hour each time cause I don't have to set up and pack up every time!6142c0407b907090fe3b6136f5ddfbde.jpg7dab2158b252c94d17d60126242dedf1.jpg2418d3f3296a093a91821d97a7f1db9b.jpg17e74ca31742255671ecf644fbdbacb5.jpgc728be8d8dd8031ff6fa497dd7651d4b.jpg411d00aaeb5b464548d0175119bf95b3.jpg9845164baf30b341ea204bb6879ec11b.jpg

What'd those cost you? I need to upgrade mine soon and this is the one I've been looking at.

**** yeah, congrats your shop is official now, no more tool trailer!

Did you have to do all the grading or did your contractor get it? Now’s a good time to seed, it’ll come in good next Spring.

And The Truc fits!!

Haha yup! Gotta wait a bit to load all the stuff in. I have a feeling the inspector might not like that when he comes to inspect. Plus I would like to seal the concrete first. I'll text you in a bit abt that...

They did all the grading. They are going to seed as well. I think I mentioned this before, they just did the right side and the back. I'm gonna fill in the left side with crusher run for more parking. The quarry does have their own trucks and delivery is reasonable. Hopefully the neighbor will let me borrow (or rent) his Bobcat to spread it.

Bag: I had 2 different liftmaster openers installed when we had our new garage doors installed. we love them cause they are so much quieter than the old Craftsmans 1/2 hp ones i installed 30 years ago.

are you installing these liftmasters yourself?

good luck
