Companion tools.

I work on alot of metric bits, from Toyotas to my Honda Dirtbike and my Shiftkart. I have hardly any SAE tools and I needed a wrench today that I did not have. I went to sears and picked up a set of Companion combo wrenches.
I got a few metrics in the kit that I am going to throw in my travel box. I am only going to use these once or twice a year and i cant see spending a ton of cash on them. Companion wasnt on the master tool list on this site, I was wondering who makes them, the same people that makes craftsman? What is the warranty? Anyone else use them for occasional use?

Companion tools are made in China to god-knows-what specifications. I have some of those tools and they are worse- in some cases - than the **** you find a harbor freight. I understand that these wrenches may only be used once a year, and for that, they should work fine. But I wouldn't put too much stock in them...

companions tools are good for once or few time to use a year. my dad have companions wrenches as it is very old like from 1990 or 1980???

my problems is companions are not lifetime warranty if tool broke....

that why sears clearance all companions hand tools.

they are ok for limited use, but you can buy Canadian tire's Mastercraft stuff that is lifetime warranty for roughly the same price.

back in the 70's I was broke, had a wife and 2 kids and an old honda motorcycle ... I bought a set of open end and box end Sears brand [not Craftsman] made in Japan wrenches ... no warantee ... it was all I could afford ... I've still got 'um I still use 'um and I wouldn't replace 'um ... I used 'um this weekend and all week last week ... when I bought 'um I thought they were junk ... they proved me wrong

I said all that ta' say this ... give 'um a chance and see if they're any good ... I don't have any Companion wrenches so I don't know how they are ... but Sears usually sells pretty good tools ... till they got merged with K-mart anyway ... now they have some K-mart junk tools in the middle of the isle ... but Companion is a Sears brand

i would buy companions wrenches to do custom tool like bend the wrench to do rare work then i dont have to worry about my craftsman professional wrench to get bend and crack the chrome plate....

i was surprised that my tech friend had companion sockets and he still use it since he bought it like 4 or 5 years ago. it is 1/4dr sockets where he dont use it much like me that i use a lot for engine repair and transmission repair... he is front end guy and aligment tech....

that is true! but i had my tools in my small toolbox in my truck. but i always ask my friend or client what is problem than i figure myself out what i need to bring then i know what i need to bring it. most time i get it fix...

well i cant give anyone my tools because it is mine! And i need it all time so i dont have to search and waste a lot of time....

well my travel toolbox are heavy and i have what i need to do if my nissan truck break down in somewhere....

but i have lot and lot of tools in my big toolboxes at my chrysler dealership. i am chrysler service technician (which i am work in heavy line). i have most of tools what i need to do all works in my work while other techs dont have same tools of what i have my tools.....

TonyKart Mitox 125cc. I raced alot with Alex Barron back in the day. I did some SKUSA, but as of late, I am just doing club races for fun. ( Southern California )

As for the tools, Not a big fan, simply because of thier origin. For what they cost, you could have spent a few $$$ more and gotten thier craftsman counterpart. The quality is going to be lower than craftsman, simply because sears would not like too see thier low end tools hold up better than craftsman. Just doesnt make sense, ya know?

My Racing tools are mostly craftsman, with the exception of rathets, where I have an SK and a Snap On. I have Backups for everything I use often... 2 10mm, 2 13mm, + an adjustable. Bit sockets, T handles and Regular L wrenches too, simply because your nuts if you dont have duplicates of the most important things... youll be SOL; the WORST is breaking a tool you need when you dont have some other means to get the job done.

I have a set of SAE and Metric Companion wrenches in my travel/junkyard bag. These are tools that I keep in the car and use at the junkyard when pulling parts. I abuse them but they work fine. No real problems. Can't beat the price...especially when you might lose them at a junkyard.

I also have a set of Companion pliers and a diagonal cutter. Those aren't quite as durable. I've since replaced them Stanely units.

If you take the tools to the vacation place or the girlfriend's house, you will cuss them every time you use them, and eventually haul the "good stuff" out there.
As car tools, they would be OK, as when you are broken down on the side of the road, you will be thankful for anything you have. My car tools are mostly Craftsman.

Yeah we do. Especailly at the one track I race at. Its not uncommon for us to get freight trains of 5+ karts bumper to bumper. Awesome racing, but damn, if somebody screws up the last place guys wind up winning haha. I really want to get into bigger roadcourse tracks. The one I raced at last season was a 1/2 mile 10 turn... VERY technical so we stay bunched up too. Unfrotunatly, its luck and HP that wins most of the time there

The lower horsepower classes always make for better racing. Not to say there aren't good races in ICC, because they are, but for the most part the lower horsepower classes make for better racing.

As for Craftsman vs. Companion, I do not own a single tool from either. I've never even seen a tool section at Sears (that's where they sell Crapsman, right? lol). Then again, Canadian Sears *****, so maybe that's why. I was gifted a Craftsman raised panel ratchet once. Only took me a 1/2" swing in a vain effort to try and turn a fastener with such a thing to realize it was dumpster food and I sold it to a blind guy for $5.

The stuff they sell nowdays.....well.....I have no clue, but it probably ain't worth a tinkers damn.

You guys have never experienced anything until you run a KT100 on an enduro down the back straight, swoop around 3 & 4, buzz thru the dog leg and then brake hard so you can make the turn-in for the infield at Daytona somewhere around 120 MPH in a pack of 20 or 30 karts!

Not to mention you're lying flat on your back somewhere around 1 1/2" to 2" off the pavement!

No the same tool. The old Companion tools are probably better then the profesional series tools they sell now.

Companion is just what the name says...the guy you take with you on the trip to Alaska that you can kick in the knee and leave for the bear to eat while you get away...and definitely not who you could count on when your in a tough spot..not worth a plug nickel if you ask me

I've been considering the Stanley stuff from Wal-Mart for my lug around in the pickup tools. They seem like reasonable quality for Chaiwanese stuff. Won't hurt so much if they get ripped off or lost. The biggest problem I have is that I would have to -- gasp--shiver go to Wal-Mart to get em.

Not to worry....there is plenty of Stanley stuff on liquidation.com and eBay. Proto and Blackhawk, too.

I have some Companion pliers that get used a couple times a week. Not on the same level as my Channellock or Wilde but they're ok. A friend has a set of Companion combo wrenches, standard I think. He uses them 8 or 10 times a year and they have worked fine for him. Certainly not the best tools on the market, but not the worst either.

Back from the dead! I just got some companion tools and they arent junk at all.. in fact they have western forge markings on them! I always thought wf made good tools!
