I said this a million times when I worked at Sears; even when "we" as employees were trying to figure stuff/policies out; (insert truth with a sprinkle of sarcasm) you are trying to use logic to understand the way Sears does things.... the whole point is; that Sears policies are many times illogical and don't make any sense! This became even worse after the Kmart buyout! The primary goal is high numbers to show their higher ups, to keep them happy and profit....
While I understand everyones aggravation with Sears; I also think this is a well known problem and old news?! This is no way an excuse for how Sears operates but after working there for 7 years; it became obvious that it is a stone cold FACT. It ***** but there it is...

yeah but what do you do with the wrench set of 10 where 1 is broken so you have 9 good ones left that I swapped for the new set? what if I lost one? it just looses its warranty? I'm returning my ignition wrenchs friday. there you go sears, hows that for sales. Dad didn't have the original pouch or anything. Regardless what do you do with my set of 9 good ones and one bad one, or your set of 9 good ones and 1 bad one? I don't get it...you end up with the same exact product either way..?

Sure. It was 3 weeks long when I worked there about 5 years ago.

1 week is computer based and 2 weeks OJT while under someones wings... or for me that OJT lasted 3 days and the manager realized I could hold me own.

Would any current or former Sears employees here like to comment on training that you may or may not receive?

They can order you individual wrenches through the tool catalog and have it sent to you in 7-10 working days.... free of charge. If you return the whole set; they will put your old wrenches in a 50 gallon drum, send it out to get melted to make new tools.

Well I've worked on cars for 20 years this November and have to make, modify, beat up and destroy tools all the time. I do not expect ANY tool company to replace something that has been modified or abused. Maybe its just me but I don't think its right.

Say you own a shop and you rebuild the engine on someones car and give them a 12 month 12 thousand mile warranty. 7 months later it comes in on the hook, you look at it and discover its locked up, then you find no oil and the brand new oil filter loose (customer had just changed it himself).

Will You tell him?

A. We will have your car ready Friday at no charge.

B. You left the oil filter loose and the oil was pumped out. Your engine is junk.
I hate that for you but its not covered under warranty. I can't warranty your mistake.

Its absolutely no different for the tool companies. Why should they warranty something that was abused or modified just to suit your needs.

hitting it isn't modifying it....can you really say hitting a socket in the drive end with a hammer is worse then putting a 1000ft lb of torque impact gun on it? the oil change is on the owners shoulders, not relevant. It isn't like I forgot some critical part and it broke, needless to say what about old sockets that have been around awhile, they look rough, whats to say he doesn't say someone obviously hit it with a hammer. Hitting a socket with a hammer is like drag racing a brand new superduty diesel, say the rearend goes bad, who says they can deny the warranty? Abuse? Negative, it should be able to handle anything the unmodified motor throws at it. I'd understand if it was modified, but under stock circumstances...cutting/welding something is a whole different story.

I worked at sears 20 years ago when I was in HS, and they hired people that had no clue about tools back then too. It's a barely above minimum wage job, so you get what you get.

As I recall management weren't rocket scientists either.

The customer service *****, but as long as they keep having killer deals on tools I'll keep shopping there

I just keep in mind that the Craftsman name that used to mean a lot to me(quality, warranty, value) doesn't necessarily reflect today's reality.

As long as I expect very, very, very little from salespeople I can tolerate shopping there.

I've been ordering stuff for pickup, as I want to deal with the clerks as little as possible.

actually it does piss me off to talk to them as I for some reason expect them to know something about tools.

Maybe I'm just getting to be an old fart.

Anyway, amazingly, I've had far better results speaking to the staff at harbor freight. The guys that work there actually seem to know or care about tools, much to my surprise.

I'm starting to resemble Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino more and more every day. :pimpflash

Well, I'd like to report above and beyond service at one of my local Sears. I ordered something from the site that said they had one on hand. Before leaving to pick it up, we received a phone call from the Tool department saying that they didn't have the item in stock. (I woulda been upset there, but...)

He then said, they do have one at the store by his house and he was going to pick it up for me tomorrow and bring it to the store he works at. Sure enough, was there today.

Ok, their "on hand inventory" system bites, but, this was not something I would have expected them to do for me.

Back to your regularly scheduled Sears bashing now... :)

Last year I worked in the field at Sears and one time this guy wanted to return his TV because he didn't like it, but it was a 32" CRT that he couldn't bring back (200 lbs) and we had no way of picking it up. So I offered to take my car over to his place (nearby), stuff that monster into it (barely fit in my old Lexus LS400), and bring it back to the store so that he could return it!

Another time we had a local delivery truck miss a pickup on a treadmill, and the guy was obviously very upset when we told him. So I got with the Home Improvement manager and we loaded it into his Blazer to deliver it and set it up in his home for him (about 8 miles away from the store). They were then very happy with the service.

Yet another time, a guy knocked his LCD TV over and broke the screen. He came back and wanted it to be repaired, telling me about about how his son is mentally retarded and needs the TV. Unfortunately that brand TV went bankrupt and you could no longer get a screen for it for repair. So he wanted me to give him a new TV outright. I told him no, but that under the circumstances we could give him the same TV for around the same cost to repair it. He refused to budge and started protesting on the street each weekend about how Sears hates mentally retarded kids!

In the camera department, this guy was browsing cameras, so I asked if he needed any help and he said "no thanks, I'm fine." So I said "okay, well we have these models on sale and this is the promotion we're running, so let us know if you need help" and he responded with "What part about 'no thanks, I'm fine' did you not understand?!"

Customer service isn't rocket science, but it can be hard to train people on the nuances of providing good service, such as saying hello to every customer (workers had the hardest time getting used to that). And not every circumstance will present itself with a solution that both the store and the customer agree is fair. In the original post, that is a nightmarish scenario, but there are still many associates out there trying to do a good job.

Just remember that being on the "front lines" like that has become more and more difficult as the years have gone by and people have become less personable, less patient, more rude, and more demanding.

They're advertising openings here in West Michigan. Went out to the store and the Auto Center. Both told me I had to apply on-line. ....I must be such a loser, I can't even figure out how to apply on their "Jobline" employment site, it keeps kicking me off half way through.... let alone get a job there.

As far as the ignition wrench goes I remember hearing a similar situation at Harbor Freight. In that case the customer went over and grabbed the full set, took out the good wrench or socket he needed and put the bad one in the set and said here. In that case the sales person "got it"

The other recommendation I always here is to NEVER let the sears people help you pick out the replacement warranty items. Always get em picked out yourself and carry em up to the counter.

Then yogi and boo boo can keep chatting the whole time.

Well, Sears doesn't make *anything* easy, evidentally!

Why is everybody so damn surprised and confused everytime I pick something up after getting an email that my order is ready?!? *EVERY DAMN TIME*

And yet *somehow* they work the system so they have a 99% compliance iwth the 5 minute guarantee.

I remember when that first went into effect, there were stacks of $5 coupons the machine printed out for all the lates.

I had to take some tests, believe it or not, to get a job there. For like $3.45 an hour! :thumbup:

Good luck partner, I know it ***** getting a job but keep with it and you'll land something. Michigan has got to be a real tough place to live right now. I'd like to move to Ohio to be with my peeps, but I don't have a clue how I could get a decent job there.

Well, my 2 closest Sears are great. I don't worry to much about the knowledge stuff, but they always replace things and go the extra mile.

I was looking at multimeters the other day and 1/2 of them were on locked peg hooks. I got pissed and just ripped the one I wanted off the hook. I mean the thing was $35... WTF do they need to lock it for?

I don't live in dirtbag, usa. I live in a pretty rural area, everythings open just some is on locked peg hooks.

Sorry about the long read...but I'm mad...been stewing about this since 2pm.

So, Today I go ahead and decide to pull the trigger on a 19.2 impact and drill combo set, 150 on sale for 100. I said, well **** I got some stuff that needs warrantying. One was my fathers ignition wrench, boxed end, but with the shiney chrome, and another his hand impact for screw bits, the one phillips bit tip was broke off. First off the guy tells me the impact didn't have a lifetime warranty, me and dad said Yes it does! and i pointed to the big business card sized print that said LIFETIME GAURANTEED along with the speel about satisfaction gaurantee, so then he goes on to tell me how He figured it wouldn't be warranteed because its an impact item, and said it never used to be warranteed and is a new thing, I then tell him how its atleast 5 years old if not 6 or 7 and he ignores me. He goes on to say how bolt extractors never used to be warranteed because of what they're used for. I told him, well by all means then, forget it! Stop warrantying ratchets, extensions, sockets, no sense, I mean, since they all get 'toqued and impacted on' they're wear items, theres no sense. Hes like welll and then stopped talking and then he tells me how they don't warranty abuse either and if a socket looks like its been hammered on he won't warranty it. I just looked at him. That pissed me off...I'll drive over the socket with a grapple skidder and he'll warranty it and he'll like it. regardless I didn't say anything, and after being led to the drill bit section, and having to lead my clueless :headscrat sears employee to the handtool section, and him asking the other cashier (it was like watching yogie and boo boo, except yogie and boo boo had more brain cells) if he should just warranty the whole package, because dad had kept it in the original package when not using it, just to keep it together. he gave us a whole new one, 25.99. Good, one down, one to go, And I thought that was the hard part :shocking: So Dad says, and this and hands him the broken wrench. I said yeah its an ignition wrench. The guy looks at the wrench, which has one end completely broke off and MIA and walks over and starts looking at combination wrenchs on the hooks, I said no...its a boxed end, you're in the wrong spot. He says "oh" and keeps looking there. He stands up "I Don't see it" I Said well you won't, its an ignition wrench, they come in those little sets in the bags. and its boxed end, those are open end. He just looks at me "Oh" and just looks at it dumb founded. and hes like I don't see that size. I'm like there isn't any there, those are the wrong ones. He's like Oh? are both ends shut like that? And points to the good boxed end. I said yeah its a boxed end wrench, both ends are like that. he wanders off to go find yogi bear, yogi says well we can't warranty that. I just look at him, instantly pissed all ready for a battle. He said they come in a set, so if you want to bring in the whole set we'll swap the sets out, but we can't give you just the one. I'm like well the other ones aren't broke. He said I know that but I have to have a whole set to swap it out. I'm like so whats the difference if I have a bunch of good wrenchs and one broken one, or if you have a bunch of good wrenchs, either way you have the same amoutn of good ones, you just swap the one out and take the set. he's like well I can't, nope. shaking his head. So Dad is an easy going guy, and says oh okay thanks. and starts to walk off, well I'm not that easy going, but it isn't my wrench so we walk around to the 19.2 drills and I'm bitching the whole time, on and on about how they're all stupid, not knowing what kind of wrench is which, I told him where to look, hes blind. I go over to the drills and the set I want is gone, and I ask the older gentleman because like i said about 4 feet from the counter, the other two are too dumb, they wouldn't know which one I was talking about. So he proceeds to tell me how they're all out of stock and if I want to come back thursday, they might have some more on the truck, and if I want to pay for it now, I can have the first one off the truck as soon as they come in, he's just not sure when they'll show up, but the next trucks thursday, so if they come thursday or 2 weeks or a month from now, either way the first one is mine. I said..no...I wanted it now. Can't you do something for me today? Like put together the set for that price or? He's like well I don't have it here...I'm like you do and hes like oh oh well no. I said "figured.." and looked around, found the 26 piece wrench set on sale , no sae, so I snagged the metric, I don't have much for wrenchs, I've only got a few combinatiosn that came with my 154pc set. Then I grabbed a pick set and head for the front desk. all this time I'm complaining to dad about them and how I shouldn't buy a wrench set because I'll have to save the case and all the wrenchs to get it warranteed, god forbid I loose one or if I take them and put them IN my toolbox. I go to the front desk, and the yogi asks me if I still have the wrench, and says just for us this one time he'll take care of it for us because he doesn't want to have us drive all the way back down here. Because earlier I complained about how its a 45minute drive and it isn't worth it for a ignition wrench. He comes back and says he can't find a boxed end but will we settle for an open end, dad says sure idc. so he comes back with two open end wrenchs, one for each size, comes to 11 dollars, that made me happy. But this whole time hes gone and coming back and what not the other cashier, boo boo as hes been referred to is standing there looking around at me and dad and whoever else, I was mad because I still hadn't been cashed out, he rung up my stuff and left it as I waited to swipe my gift card and hand him my 70 some odd dollars, must be he wasn't worried about it. So I ask boo boo if he knows how to ring me out and he says well oh yeah and does so right before yogi shows up with the two combination wrenchs.... not that all the time he wasted standing there would of meant anything to me :shocking: that concludes my sears expierence. Idk if I should be mad or should just laugh at how stupid sears staff is. They are definitly getting an email...I'm just wondering what I should ask for...I just got another sears gift card today from a friend for graduation so I'm going down friday before the sale ends for the impact and drill, definitly going to call first to see if they have it in stock, but what does everyone else think? If it wasn't for there pricing and qaulity I'd of walked out of that store and never come back, it'd be full time snappy ordering for me. But I'm just a student after all.

I gotta say; you may have not intended to offend people with this comment, but it is out of line. Am I too assume that if my local Sears locks it's glass doore, I live in dirt bag USA? That can easily offend and take this thread in a whole new direction.

All of our multi-meters had security hooks; the Sears in a bigger city about a hour away had their tools behind plexiglas. I think the bigger cities with higher traffic; has the plexi to keep theft down.

just saying that they only do it in high theft areas, not trying to offend you, I live in a pretty rural area. Maybe the reason most of our stuff isn't locked up is because of the fact that they're constantly out of stock of just about everything. :headscrat

No, you are right. If you live in an area where everything is 'under glass' you live in 'dirt bag' USA. Not to be offensive, but you don't put the stuff under high security unless YOU HAVE TO.

It costs a bundle, and worse, sales go down on items that the customers can't 'fondle'.

So you only do it if your shrink is high.
Even then, you try other methods first.

So if the stuff is secured, your neighbors are stealing it. Sorry. It's not racial, if that was what someone thought.

I've had to pay for security in some of the nicer neighborhoods because rich kids like to steal, and had zero upgraded security in highly ethnic neighborhoods because the locals didn't like thieves.

But if your local store is all 'Alcatraz' it isn't because they just had excess money they wanted to waste on extra security.

I was pointing out a fact of retail. You do not spend thousands and tens of thousands, of dollars on excessive security unless you need it.

Dirt bag USA in the context the original poster used it, and I used it, is about theft.

The statement that says:

I shop at Sears, the kind with tools locked behind glass, but only when the one closer to me, without the glass, doesn't have it in stock. Does that make me mixed breed or something? :spit:

Seriously, I can't believe anyone got offended by this talk about tools locked behind glass. Political correctness at its finest I guess. :headscrat

I find the term dirt bag to be extremely offensive as well. It makes my potting soil feel bad about itself. I recommend that the term "scumbags" be used instead.

Anyways, that's why I prefer Sears Essentials - the tools are all accessible, with the exception of a few select locked items.

Locking up merchandise is for one reason. It is to protect high potential theft items or high priced items. Ever been to a jewelry store? Unfortunately our whole society has become Dirt-Bag-USA.
Recently the local HD had Circuit Breakers caged, not all of them, just the more fashionable ones “Square-D”. I asked when I was making a purchase why only the “Square-D” section was caged and they said it was because of theft. They finally un-caged them after a month or two. My guess it was a roving band of thieves that had passed through the area…LOL

Opps, sorry, substitute "Scum-Bag-USA" for "Dirt-Bag-USA". I wouldn't want to be accused of being Non-PC, my Kirby Vacuum Cleaning had a frown on it just now and my Harley didn't care for the term either...LOL

No, you are right. If you live in an area where everything is 'under glass' you live in 'dirt bag' USA. Not to be offensive, but you don't put the stuff under high security unless YOU HAVE TO.

It costs a bundle, and worse, sales go down on items that the customers can't 'fondle'.

So you only do it if your shrink is high.
Even then, you try other methods first.

So if the stuff is secured, your neighbors are stealing it. Sorry. It's not racial, if that was what someone thought.

I've had to pay for security in some of the nicer neighborhoods because rich kids like to steal, and had zero upgraded security in highly ethnic neighborhoods because the locals didn't like thieves.

But if your local store is all 'Alcatraz' it isn't because they just had excess money they wanted to waste on extra security.

I don't live in the town where local Sears is located. I live in an area that is rural and we make sure it stays that way. The town the Sears is in, is actually a very nice area, but it's in a mall. Maybe that is why, I dunno.

I ask that you be careful how you word things. Labeling is not needed. It's no different from making a racist remark imo.

I was pointing out a fact of retail. You do not spend thousands and tens of thousands, of dollars on excessive security unless you need it.

This is all a waste of forum space. No one care's what you find or do not find offensive. This is the internet, that bull sh!t stuff might work in the real world but not here. So lets get back on topic Because This is a TOOL forum and lets keep it that way. :)

I worked in a Lowes/HD type store in college and we had to lock up the router bits and Makita power tools. We hated it as it took a lot more time to make a sale but we did it because theft was such a problem. Got so we had to start locking up chain saws for the same reason.
