Here is my 3 lunger. 230V, 6.5 HP, rated at 21.5 CFM PD and 17 CFM @ 100 psi.

It isn't the same as a two stage but it does have quite nice volume and pressure for a single stage.

I finally got my free Champion VR5-8 going.

It was given up on because it was blowing breakers at an oil change shop, which was due to a bad cap and a resultant burned terminal. I took it all apart and cleaned it up. It was a real learning experience, but I got through it thanks to the help of many GJ members

Did you figure out the correct rotation issue?

Yes, I got it squared away. It must have been due to me replacing the caps, although I couldn't figure it out from before and after photos. I went ahead and switched the wires in the motor junction box though, it was a lot quicker than disconnecting everything and figuring out where I went wrong.

What a great collection of hardware and history!

Here's my addition to my collection of vintage and antique stuff on my little Christmas tree farm in New Hampshire.

11615136874_010c8cf2d8_b.jpg

This is a Champion VR5-8 which I found on CL down in central Mass. and hauled home laying down on my snowmobile trailer. The seller had it out in a shed after pulling it from service in a shop. Said it was a great machine but had no power for it at home. Gave him $400 for it after checking the tank and turning the pump by hand. Junked the original motor and replaced it with a Leeson 5hp 1Ø motor. New feet, starter, Solberg filter, automatic drain, and output piping with regulators for a 3/4" high-flow leg and a regular 3/8" leg for regular duties.

She's in a great spot close to the garage but out of the bays for space and operational concerns.

This is one function of the 3/4" leg: to supply air for a home snowmaking system!

Just another project developed here at Magic Hour Farm for fun, laughs, and because we could!!

Jrsulo, I have just inherited a Curtis C96 and would like to opt around the Centrifugal unloader because of lack of new parts and our weather is very cold, causing problems with the unloader. Do you have pics of your modification? Please

I sure hope that's not PVC pipe in your second image!!

Good eye, yes it is! CPVC to be exact. Okay, now here comes the lecture and debate about the use of plastic plumbing for air distribution.

1. It works fine.
2. A machine shop across town has been using CPVC pipe for several years with no explosion nor death.

so i've been through this entire thread and i can't seem to identify my new compressor. does anyone have an idea where i should start looking? i got it running and it seems to be fairly quiet, but i will need to replace the check valve (cleaning it helped a little) and the air filters.

You can get some nice solberg air filters on Amazon.com

I've never seen a check valve like that but you can probably replace it with a modern equivalent and maybe have to add an elbow or two.

the check valve is an in-tank 3/4". the big piece on top is a manifold for the 2 air lines from the compressors and the unloader line that is supposed to come off the top. i was going to replace the check valve with a modern one that has the unloader connection on the side. i'll look for the air filters, thanks

Nothing like some of the other beasts on here, but I got it for a good deal I think. Found it on the Sears Outlet site about 2 hrs away. Was listed as a refurb unit. I called the store and they said a guy had bought it, plugged it in and it started leaking so he brought it back. Ended up being a leak going into the tank, so they just put thread sealant on it and marked it down. Came with same warranty as a new one. Got it for $299 otd.

Here's mine. Bought it at the local TSC on sale IIRC for $549 thru my friends farm so no tax :) Really need an 80 gallon 2 stage but couldn't swing it at the time. This is a 3 cylinder 13.5cfm @135psi so it does pretty good. Piped it in at the same time.

Did an oil and filter change on big blue yesterday so figured I'd take a picture.

It's a 20hp Quincy QR25 on a 120 gallon tank. Have it plumbed into my back up compressor which is an older 80 gallon 5hp QR25. Plenty of volume for running the blast cabinet.

So, does that mean it's a 390? I also see the box behind saying 240 volts. A 20hp single phase motor is crazy. Looks nice by the way. I have a 350 on a 200gal tank I just bought that needs a new motor and hopefully that's it.

That's the fascinating part about safety. Everything is completely safe until that tiny moment right before it isn't. Don't risk it! There is a lot of stored energy in a pipe that size. Are you willing to risk a child around it? Your wife?

I don't think they make a 20HP single phase motor. I don't see any capacitor housings on that motor so I'm going to take a wild guess and say it's 3-Phase.

Yep it's a 390. It's 3 phase. Had the city run 3 phase to the shop years ago.

The QR's are great machines. Even if your 350 needs more than a motor, parts are easy to get and the pumps are easy to rebuild.

Bought it rebuilt 20 years ago and more than likely 20 years old at the time. It is an Oholiab built in Israel part for part identical to the Ingersol & Rand. The compressor is against the wall making the flywheel/cooling fan not operational so I have some squirrel cage fans that start and stop with the compressor

Looking at a number of the compressor installs on this thread I see a lot of drip legs and home made coolers/dryers using piping...

Bought a new Quincy 60 gallon, 5 hp, two stage compressor. Ordered 3 Heavy Duty Vibration-Damping Leveling Mounts from McMaster-Carr and an Air Belt Guard Aftercooler from Southwest Thermal Technology model M-20-76785.

Here's mine. 80 Gallon 2 stage Ingersoll Rand bought it at a local TSC brand new for half off because of a damaged wire cage around the belt and pulley assembly

Has anyone used the air line kit from Northern Tool or Sears, its called RapidAir? it comes in 1/2" and 3/4" nylon/aluminum material.

Did you perform a hydrostatic test on the tank to ensure its integrity?

No, That's probably a great idea! I know the tank is rated for 200 psi... But the compressor shuts off at 135. I think I will borrow a pump and Fill with water and perform this test. Thanks for the recommendation.
