Does anybody have a good suggestion for taking a 600 pound compressor off of the shipping pallet without the use of a forklift or overhead hoist?

just leave it on the pallet remove the lags that are holding it to pallet and replace with bolts go to tsc store and buy a cow mat and cut to fit under pallet tada done

Take a sheet of 1/2" plywood and cut it into 1'x2' pieces. Place them in two even stacks next to the pallet and then walk the compressor off the pallet onto the plywood. Gently tip it to one side and slide a piece of wood out (help if you have someone down on the floor pulling the wood out). Gently let it back down and gently tip it the other way and pull a piece out there. Wash, rinse, repeat until it is on the floor. Be careful because while 600 pounds is not much, it can squish you if you get too stupid with it.

This would be an excellent time to buy a hoist (what I used) or a cherry picker. If you need it once, you will need it again.

LOL damn I have a hoist, too.... I didn't use it to get my compressor off of my truck because I had my brother there to help me. It still took some time and was DAMN heavy, but we got the job done.

Here's a picture of the compressor installed in the workshop i use
comp1.jpg

It's rated at about 32 cfm & runs off a 11kw rotary phase converter. The compressor & filters were all picked up off ebay. All the pipework is a nylon pushfit system specifically for compressed air from John Guest

Its a home shop in a friends garden but i get to use it and the equipment in exchange for doing the metalwork on his old Maserati and overhauling the equipment we find cheap on ebay , auctions etc . We,ve 3 large blast cabinets (all from auctions) a 2 post car hoist (from a garage clearence) . tyre changer & balancer + various metalworking equipment. still more things to find but its all been done on a small budget.

OT to OP, but Wow, I've never seen a Ghilbi that stripped down. Was it an SS or a 4.7? Those are beautiful cars. You restoring it back to original, or making mods? Any more pics you can post?

Its a 4.7 (one of only about 23 RHD cars produced) & its going to be restored to original condition . I'll start a new thread on the fabrication forum in a couple of days with additional photos of the metalwork

I know you said no hoist, but I used a $45 chain hoist from Northern Tool and a 3x1/4" sammy lag (2000lb tear out) with and eye bolt to lift my 450lb 5hp Ingersol Rand off of the pallet it came on. It worked awsome and was very solid during the lift. I then bought more Sammy screws for future hoisting needs in other areas in the garage if needed. Very obscure after you screw the eye bolt out.

Does anybody have a good suggestion for taking a 600 pound compressor off of the shipping pallet without the use of a forklift or overhead hoist?

Thanks for the input on lifting the compressor. Here is what I ended up doing:

Delivered the compressor to the shop on a flatbed trailer directly from the dealer:

I repositioned the compressor on the trailer using a pallet jack:

P1010857.jpg

Trimmed the pallet and lifted the compressor off of the trailer with a Genie lift:

P1010859.jpg

Next, moved the trailer out of the way:

P1010860.jpg

Then transfered the compressor back to the pallet jack:

P1010861.jpg

Moved the compressor into its working position. Rerigged the compressor to Genie lift:

Removed the pallet, lowered the compressor ito its working position, marked the anchor bolt locations. Then lifted the compressor up and moved 3 feet or so out of way, drilled anchor bolt holes, install anchor bolts, drilled and set hockey pucks (great GJ tip), set compressor on pucks. Not pictured are the anchor bolt nuts and washers.

Job complete. Entire operation done by one person.

The Quincy blends in nicely with the surroundings. Love the Red White and Blue flag on the compressor!

dang... 8 straps. It looks like a lot but now that I think about it, I'd probably put that many too if I spent that kind of coin on a toy like that!!! whats the model #?

It doesn't show in the final picture but did you install a rubber washer or bushing on top of the mounts before the washers and nuts to lessen vibration noise through the anchor bolt? I used some old shock bushings and washers on top of mine to totally isolate it in rubber.
Great use of your resources. I remember when I got mine home and backed up to the shop I stood there scratching my head saying "Now how do I get this to the ground?" Lucky for me a good friend stopped by for something totally different in his work truck with the power lift gate and ended up doing a quick swap from one truck to the other then to the ground.

I love it... He has $1,000+ compressor on $.99 hockey pucks. The best thing ever to come out of Canada!!!! THE multi-purpose tool, the venerable hockey puck!

The 30 gal is nothing special, but it does have a Cool Stance. The Go kart wheels are so much better looking then the 3in wide stockers. I guess i have to much time on my hands.

I bought it at Lowe's. Its the 30 gal Single stage, belt drive. The compressor works great and is pretty quiet. As for specs i need to find the manual. I removed all the decals so I have no info there. Item # 221495

Since we were talking about unloading techniques for verticals, I thought I'd share these pics. I finally got through dealing with the GF's water heater that crapped out last Sunday at 11 pm... do they go out at any other time... and now had time to get my new Champion 80 gallon vertical off the trailer.

I drilled two 3/8" holes in the motor mounting plate, and bolted this pad eye to it. ****** the ring with an engine hoist, and the rest was gravy. It was actually much easier than I expected.

And voila!

Very nice, do you happen to have the owners/parts manual? 930

I did a very similar thing when I got my compressor. I was not able to mount the eyebolt I used at dead center though and consequently the compressor had a tendency to swing and was not perpindicular with the floor. I still recommend this method though. Nice job.

Cheers!

Zrexer, that is a great idea. I am going to move my shop in the next year and that includes the compressor, so I am going to use it. One question that I have about yours is where is the contactor box? Is it a wall mount or are you going to add one? If it did not come with one, I have had very good luck with factorymation.com for contactors and heaters. Running a 20 amp plus motor straight off of the pressure switch contacts is a recipe for welded contacts and a toasted motor down the road. Doing one right should not cost more than $50 or so.

Didn't come with one but I have sourced a Square D 8911 mag starter and heater for it, it's sitting in the box until I have time to wire it. Turns out it was better it wasn't preinstalled, gave me more clearance for the lifting operation.

four years old, just finally got it out of my van and into the garage. seven guys, no problem.

still need to finish wiring, intake air and figure out if my airline is the best size. I'm doing 1/2" copper now with one drop.

If it wouldn't be too much trouble, any parts diagram/specifications. I should just order a manual. Thanks 930, I have the same compressor in three phase 5hp.
Hey 930 I scanned all the parts pages for you - shoot me an email or a PM and give me an email address for you and I'll send them.

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post but I've been lurking around here for about a year now. Lots of impressive setups people have.

Anyway, here is my Kellogg 20 horsepower compressor as it looked the day I bought it.

<a href="http://s441.photobucket.com/albums/qq132/mr_andrew_spencer/20hp%20air%20compressor/?action=view&current=IMG_5725800x600.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/qq132/mr_andrew_spencer/20hp%20air%20compressor/IMG_5725800x600.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I primed and painted it a particular shade of blue that I liked. Whenever I paint something that is to be used in my shop (usually some used machinery, racks, cabinets, etc.), my intention is to use this color for a uniform look. However, it being PPG Omni urethane, that gets expensive. I eyeballed a mix of cheap Rustoleum oil base paint and got something pretty close. The pump, motor, and receiver have the PPG color, and the steel mounting sled has the Rustoleum color.

<a href="http://s441.photobucket.com/albums/qq132/mr_andrew_spencer/20hp%20air%20compressor/?action=view&current=IMG_5976DesktopResolution.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/qq132/mr_andrew_spencer/20hp%20air%20compressor/IMG_5976DesktopResolution.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

That's me standing next to it for size comparison. I'm only 5'6" but still, it's huge.

<a href="http://s441.photobucket.com/albums/qq132/mr_andrew_spencer/20hp%20air%20compressor/?action=view&current=IMG_6034DesktopResolution.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/qq132/mr_andrew_spencer/20hp%20air%20compressor/IMG_6034DesktopResolution.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I just got it up into the loft a few days ago but I haven't wired it in or run any air lines yet. The receiver is one that the seller threw in with the package. It was originally part of a DeVilbiss compressor but had seen other duties during its lifetime, such as LP storage. It's only 80 gallons though. For a compressor this size, I'm guessing that's on the small side.

<a href="http://s441.photobucket.com/albums/qq132/mr_andrew_spencer/20hp%20air%20compressor/?action=view&current=IMG_6064DesktopResolution.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/qq132/mr_andrew_spencer/20hp%20air%20compressor/IMG_6064DesktopResolution.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I built that cantilever loft section with this air compressor in mind. I'm glad I extended it all the way out to the roll up door to leave room for random **** I decide to store up there and maybe in the future, a refrigerated dryer unit.

To answer your questions as to how I got this beast up there; forklift. I temporarily bolted the receiver to a pallet and I modified the steel mounting sled with 3" x 5" rectangular tube to accept the blades while limiting their travel so they couldn't hit the flywheel on the other side.

<a href="http://s441.photobucket.com/albums/qq132/mr_andrew_spencer/20hp%20air%20compressor/?action=view&current=IMG_6044DesktopResolution.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/qq132/mr_andrew_spencer/20hp%20air%20compressor/IMG_6044DesktopResolution.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I have yet to get it under power; have to wait for the funds to pay for the electrical supplies. However I already went ahead and bought this huge motor starter for the three phase, 220V, 50A motor. I'll be running it on 208V though since that's what I have.

<a href="http://s441.photobucket.com/albums/qq132/mr_andrew_spencer/20hp%20air%20compressor/?action=view&current=IMG_6076DesktopResolution.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/qq132/mr_andrew_spencer/20hp%20air%20compressor/IMG_6076DesktopResolution.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Hope you all enjoyed my first post. And thanks for the untold inspiration and advice you all have given me without your knowing it!

Wound up going to your photo bucket acount to see the pics. That is a NICE compressor but I don't think I could afford the power bill when that baby cranks off...

Nice job on the repaint and it's almost the same color as mine will be painted this summer (I hope). The loft idea gains a lot of space by getting that monster off of the floor but how easy will it be to service up there for oil changes and belts?

Other than that, it looks great and welcome to the madhouse. After seeing your idea of a compressor, you will fit in here just fine.....:)

Thanks for checking out my air compressor, GeorgiaHybrid. Since you went to the PB account, you must have seen the pictures of the broken air manifold I repaired. Haha, it's improvised to say the least. I was told that the replacement costs $300 and I couldn't be bothered with pulling that huge flywheel anyway. We'll see if it holds. If not, then I'll bite the bullet and replace the manifold.

I'm only working with 1200 sq ft, so, I'm willing to trade a little inconvenience in the maintenance department for the daily usage of ~50 sq ft or so that this thing would require. Putting it outside wasn't really an option for me.

Any ideas why only the first pic is displaying? Am I on new member probation or something?

On the links for the other files fix them to resemble this one:

"URL="http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/qq132/mr_andrew_spencer/20hp%20air%20compressor/IMG_6034DesktopResolution.jpg[/IMG"

Replace the first " with [ and the last " with ] to show the picture

Or go to your album, copy the entire IMG tag for each picture and paste it in your message as a link
