Bob: Did you paint the inside of the crankcase? I have seen a few ppl just prime it (red, rust converter stuff) but no other coat of paint.

I'm wondering the same thing. I just painted the crankcase today actually.

Really . . . ?? Why would you want paint inside crankcase to peel off over time when immersed in oil??? Then paint gets splashed with oil up onto cylinder walls, which get rubbed up and down with cylinder movement. Paint debris could get to bearings on the crank mucking it up. Makes no sense to me. Explain??

The inside of mine is just raw iron. Really easy to rust(and was rusty before I cleaned). I didnt think paint but thought maybe something should be done. I'm not sure there is a process or a certain paint for this. This is the only time I'm rebuilding it. Just wanted to ask to get opinions

I've seen it done by OEM's on the inside of compressors, gearboxes, and the like. I always assumed it was done to prevent the casting from rusting prior to machining. (Possibly so the castings could be stored outdoors?) I know some people say it's done to "seal" the casting but I've never been able confirm that.

Just want to keep this from ever happening. Granted, the original owners never changed the oil

The industry standard primer for internal is called Glyptal. I just found out and it's not the rust preventer primer sold at local store

Great information Trey T - - - - glad that proper paint was located. I was worried all your hard work might be short-lived with the internal paint.

Good luck with rest of rebuild.

I've also read of people using rustoleum #769.
I wish I would have thought about this before I painted the outside!! Oh well. Still haven't decided what I will use yet of anything

I wouldn't sweat it. Unless you hot tanked or baked the casting there's so much oil in the pores of the iron that paint wouldn't likely stick anyway.

I tolt the machine shop to clean it they might have hot tanked it.
Before I gave it to them I blasted it

Hot tanking and painting a compressor pump goes beyond what I could imagine. I suppose if the manufacturer did it. That pick of the milkshake looks like there was water introduced (sat outside?) maybe?

Compressor never was outside, well not in the last decade anyways. Before that who knows. When I drained it, water, sludge came out. Rods were very very rusty.

What all else is the machine shop doing to block of the compressor??[
Grind crank. Hone cylinders. Only thing they done to crankcase is clean. How? Not sure. I wasn't impressed on how it came back.

The pump was in super poor shape. They ground the crank, honed the cylinders. I took the crankcase up there just for a final cleaning.

That's pretty cool the shop would do that. The shop I use now would be like uh wait what ? to who?? The shop who I could take something like that to closed.

If they wouldn't have done that the compressor would have been scrap. He took. 030 off the crank!! I just got a email back from centrair stating the inside of crankcase should be primed with high heat primer. So what do u guys like?
Talk about hijacking a mans thread. Sorry. If it makes u feel any better I'm stealing your set-up on cooler!

I'm actually about to create a thread on this very topic, but had to comment on this build first - it's positively fantastic and makes me feel like my Quincy build has no character whatsoever. In fact, the only thing that mine may have that his doesn't is an interstage pressure gauge alongside the pressure relief valve. (oh, and a TEFC 7.5HP 4-pole motor :evil: )

In any event, I'm humbled by this build - it's the small things that differentiate a good mechanic from a great mechanic, and this compressor build caters to those little details that make it absolutely first class.

** One question is on the small copper tube tapped into the crank housing and going up under the filter on the center leg?? What is that for??

Burgie, I just realized your Baldor is the same motor I have on my 'new to me' Champion VR5-8 - which I haven't even started to connect up...



What size circuit breaker are you running this compressor on? The guy I got the Champion from had it connected to a 240V/60A DP breaker, but that seems to me like massive overkill...



any advice is appreciated!
