I have been planning on upgrading my current 21 gallon, 5 cfm/90 psi compressor to a 2 stage 60 gallon, 15.5 cfm/90 psi compressor in order to accomodate my new sand blaster, air tools (grinder, sander, etc.) and future painting activities. Have not yet picked up the new compressor, hoping for a craigslist deal, but have not seen any for quite some time. Would like more cfm, but definitely cannot lay out more $$$.

So, still using my 21g compressor and was using it last night, just using a small ratchet doing some minor work, compressor is in a small enclosure outside the shop. Not really paying attention working away. Picked up the ratchet and hear a small leak coming from where the quick disconnect screws onto the hose. Strange. So, go ahead and use the ratchet and HOLY S%*T!!! The dang thing about ripped the nut right off the bolt is was going so fast, heck of a lot of pressure behind it. Took the other three nuts off and stopped. Waited. Waited. Oh ****, the compressor is still running. I quickly unplug it. It was dark, late, raining, etc., so I didn't go see what the overall pressure was, but went ahead and released the pressure through the line and there was a LOT. Lucky a hose or connection didn't blow.

So, not sure I will be selling the 21g compressor. On the new compressor, was planning on using an oil cooler between the pump/motor and the tank in order to cool the air. Use water traps after that and at the equipment, etc. I am thinking that I could somehow utilize the 21g tank in conjunction with the new compressor to help cool the air in place of spending the $$$ on oil cooler, lines, etc., but wanted to see what my options were from the folks here.

I had thought putting the 21g tank between the new compressor pump (two stage) and the new tank or after the new tank or...

A coller setup of some sort between the compressor and the tank would do wonders. If you google around you can find some - I have seen some that use a trans cooler and fan but I'd wonder about the pressure rating on a trans cooler. A condenser from an older R12 car AC unit might also work if you can get fittings on it.

Keep it simple to avoid future problems. Connect the compressors independently. Put a regulator inline with the new compressor. The old one is small enough that it isn't worth doing anything extra...................and consider putting the compressors inside the garage where you can see what is going on and save your sanity.

I was hoping to use the tank from the old compressor to help cool the air and/or for extra storage. I will be removing the motor from the old compressor so it will just be a tank. Will it work for either of those things?

I've looked into the oil cooler setup and they are rated for 250 psi and 300 degrees f or so.
