Compressor leak at pressure switch

Just picked up my ir 2340l5 today. Was a return. They said his reason was it was not as described.. Powered it up and found it is leaking at the pressure switch. There is a smaller copper line that connects to it. The fitting that the copper line goes in is leaking. I pulled that out. Found a nylon sleeve in there not sure if I just need a new one or if there is a special orientation for that insert.
Tried to find the part on an ir parts diagram with no luck. There was some rtv there so the op tried to fix it I think

Thanks,
Brian

That's where it is leaking.

looks like the unloader valve is where it's leaking.

Nice folks, i've ordered from them many times.
should have what you need. If you don't see it listed-call them.
Forward those pix to them as well. It looks just like the valve on a craftsman a/c i recently repaired for a friend. many of the parts are interchangeable from one brand to another.

Is that something ir will replace under warranty? I bought it as a return at sears.. Should be fully warranted though I believe.

Looks like copper tube could be bent a bit better to make for a better fit. I would sit tight, call ir on Monday and proceed.

I don't think it's anything to do with the tank. It only leaks when it's filling. Once i turn it off, it holds pressure. Just held 155 for hours. It's not leaking from the nut. It's a slot in that valve.

I installed a pressure regulator and discovered that the 1/2" shutoff factory installed was leaking too. opened it up all the way, heard whish, thought it was one of my fittings I just did then found out it was leaking out of the handle of theshutoff. I was able to resolve it though, I simply pulled the handle off then tightened that top not down. It looks like it will not build pressure above 150ish. Too much is gushing out of the leak. I did let it fill as much as it would and put a mark on the gauge where it is so tomorrow I can tell if it's lost any pressure.

I lost 5 psi over night. Will most likely just need to redo all the fittings I did yesterday.

Hmm if it leaks only when running than yea it must be the pressure switch fitting. Ebay up a new pressure switch!

If it's a return unit, then it's probably not that old. My guess is that the pressure switch is not the likely problem. Again, i'd check that unloader valve before ordering a new pressure switch. The last unloader valve i bought was $6 at Napa.
The reason i say this is, i fixed one for a friend last year that was doing exactly what it sounds like yours is doing. Loosen the fitting for the line, Take those two torx screws out, it will come right off. Take it with you to make sure you're getting the right one. It's a cheap fix if that's it. If not, you're only out 6 bucks and you know that's not it. One other thing it could be (if it only leaks really bad while it's running) is if it has reed valves in the head, one of them could be broken or chipped, allowing pressure to back feed. Normally when this happens, either the unit won't build up enough pressure to shut off, or it takes it a long time to do so. Also an easy fix but ya gotta take the head off. Good luck!

I really think it that valve on the side. If I can find it for 6 I'll just buy it. Is that plastic insert that goes in to pressure switch part of the valve? Seems to be but the insert stayed in pressure switch.
Thanks,
Brian

Yep, that's called the unloader and the plastic bushing insert may or may not be part of it- i don't remember, take it with ya too and if it's not part of it, it cant cost much extra.

The plastic piece doesn't want to come out of pressure switch. Pretty sure that is leading to the problem though as the part i removed has nothing to fail. It's just the housing with a vent (where the leak is). I am headed to napa shortly. Thanks for the tip.

Good luck , i hope that's it. I agree with some of the previous posters in that you should probably straighten that line going to the unloader when you put the new one back on so it lines up better-it does look off a few degrees. Also if it's leaking slightly overnight, take the tank check valve out and clean it while you're at it, spray it with wd40 and put it back in-but also check the end of the hose fitting-it could be leaking slightly as well. Do this with no pressure on the line. Sometimes they get just a small piece of trash under the seal. Clean inside the coupling really good and then spray some wd40 on it.

good luck-let us know!

Napa was a major disappointment. No luck on the unloader valve. Went to TSC, they were a bit closer but still off the mark. I'll just call IR tomorrow I guess.

bingo, ocrrect 9/10 times, unlike my spelling
Sorry, but i respectfully disagree, and here's why:
It only leaks when it's running.
if it were the check valve , it would leak even when idle.

I just got off the phone with IR. Gentleman was VERY helpful and friendly. He's overnighting me a new pressure switch I believe. If it's in stock, this should be resolved tomorrow. I called another number first, that guy was not too helpful, made my compressor sound like a 30 dollar tire filler that you plug in your cigarette lighter.

FWIW, IR offered to send someone to my house (under warranty) to look over my unit when I called about an issue. As it turned out, it was easily resolved without going through that trouble. And I've only got the 20 gallon tire filler! :)

After researching some things, this thread, and the tech guy, I'm pretty confident that the unloader valvewill solve my issue. esecially if they are sending me the whole pressure switch. Thanks,
Brian

I got the new pressure switch yesterday. I swapped it out and fired it on and no leak! I still lost some pressure after a few hours, I will track that down some time this week. I lost about 5 PSI overnight so it's not TOO bad. It's not as quiet as the kobalt one but is much quieter now that it is not losing half the air it produces. Took about 6 minutes from completely empty to 175 psi. right at a minute to fill from 135 psi? to 175. I want to look at intake options next for it.
