Compressor motor...

Is it normal for a compressor motor to have a lower gauge wire from the motor to the pressure switch? Mine has about 18" of 12awg wire between the motor and pressure switch though the motor says it draws 21A. I thought 12 was only good to 20A. This is the motor...

I know my Champion is wired with smaller gauge wire also, the wire conduit is very small to the pressure switch. The motor may draw 21 amps but I doubt the pressure switch does. No expert here.

The shorter the length of wire, the more latitude you have to make it slightly smaller. Insulation temperature can also be a factor. For that usage, 12 AWG is acceptable.
