So, not wanting the compressor to echo in my steel building I've decided to mount it in a shed behind building. I'm getting close to seeing how this all works out.0e493b5dd2d802614650e2f9b288eecd.jpg3a6813117b6f041c6771494e30310dfe.jpg56aac839c03b6a43886b68ac610fd8cd.jpg41eb76a46d0e4870f3d61dc7b8fbed7b.jpgaeea62f8ea6d5d445196cca8ca168904.jpg

Is that air filter too restrictive? Let's find out...

Assuming that air filter is used on a 350 (5.7l) engine. Let's use a 350 cu in engine at 6000 rpm to determine the cfm flow of a suitable automotive air filter worst case situation airflow.

(350 cu in x 6000 rev/min) / 3456 cu in/cu ft = 607 cu ft/min

An air filter for a 350 cu in engine would need to be capable of flowing 607 cu ft/min.

That single stage air compressor pump is likely putting out only 20 cu ft/min (CFM). So that air filter, if sized for a 350 engine, is 30 times larger than needed.

OP that is a nice shed and you put some thought into the design. Nice work. Post pictures when done.

Are you going to put sound baffles inside to deaden the sound waves?

I like your math, thank you! Being that its mounted behind my building I'm not yet sure of noise factors. Hopefully have electrical hooked up soon and find out

There are sheets of sound absorbing foam from Amazon and other sources, they cut easily with an electric carving knife. Some are peel and stick, others need the tube of adhesive the manufacturer calls for.

I really like your what you are doing there...

Is the door between the compressor and the building? What is that black pipe on top for?

How do you plan on changing the belt with it right up against the wall like that?

Thank you! I haven't put the door on shed yet, the black pipe carries the air line and electrical lines74a8766af6214a75ac858b30ffca028b.jpgcf9e3af5dca5339d943e21e049b8c022.jpg60aa33b53c86bf7106da63b95c9795eb.jpg6f937f6fa49257ebcc458e7622673b77.jpgb9393dbfc596f517ed174a553cbd47f4.jpgbd1fa31f4f84777ba9d0c9328d76f44d.jpg

Looks good! As others have said you clearly did some planning here.

Would you mind explaining how you will control your fan? I built a compressor room in my shop and would like a way to automatically control an exhaust fan.

Thanks much! I'm not an electrician but my electrician tells me he can control it off pressure switch so it only runs when compressor runs.... I hope he is right, he better be lol. He is or was a professor or teacher to electricians, so far his work has been great

Are you installing an auto drain as well?

Are you putting a vent of some sort on the bottom of the enclosure to draw the air in? Assuming that the cooler fan is pushing air out.

So you have top fan pushing air out, the cooler fan pushing air out, how will the air be replaced that is being pushed out? or do I have it wrong and the cooler fan is pulling air in?

Yes and auto drain is installed. The cooler fan is actually sucking air in but I do have a vent that I havent put up yet that was gonna go down low

I want to build something similiar, but circumstances quite unsimilar. Your concern is obviously how to keep it cool, mine will be how to keep it warm and dry. Beautiful work though.

Hard to tell from your pictures, but are both ports of the Hayden cooler on the bottom? The other aftercooler threads here seem to recommend having the cooler arranged horzontally - air in via the top port and air out via the bottom port so it drains.
Yeah Larry, not sure why pics look crappy. But it has inlet at top and outlet at bottom

I would be interested in knowing how the intake mods quieted it down.
Mufflers on the intake are the way to go for less noise.

Well it ran for about 20 seconds and the water trap blew up, like literally blew apart. Not sure what happened. BUT, the compressor was much quieter for 20 seconds lol

After enclosing the structure built around my compressor the sound was reduced dramatically. I need to adapt a better intake filter system now. I am thinking about redoing the enclosure with an isolated double wall method of construction as well. I originally installed it in 1984 and at the time did not have neighbors. There are houses on either side now. I am piping air into the enclosure via a bathroom exhaust fan from the garage which is heated and air conditioned. The fan is kicked on along with the compressor by the starter box. I never did figure out how to stop the compressor sound transmission coming from the fan venting and hoping a new intake filter will help tone it down.
When I ran the compressor this week while my neighbor was home, he thought I finally got the hot rod running. Guess I need to make some more improvements.
I am following your install with interest in your results. Good luck!
