Computers in the garage

Greetings,

This might be a dumb question but I'll ask it anyway. Does the heat in a garage hurt a computer? I am thinking about putting my iMac in the garage but I'm not sure about the heat.

Thanks,
Gary

You should be fine. Just make sure it's somewhat dusted out on the inside so that it can keep itself cool. The little iMac ruining in 100f temps in the shade should be no problem at all.

For reference I have Lenovo laptops. I routinely rub them outside in direct sunlight and have had problems even when the surface is almost unstable touch.

I'm typing this from the iMac in my workshop. The shop is well insulated, but when I open the door on a hot day, it warms up pretty quickly.

I think it'll be fine. Just keep the vents on it clear of built-up dust and stuff.

I have an old iMac from 2000 and my college days that I've been using as a shop computer for years. Never had any issues with heat. Just use a keyboard you don't care about cause it's gonna get greasy when you go to look stuff up while working on a project

Dust is a bigger problem.

Dust is a bigger problem.

^ this is the truth. I'm in the auto body business, have been for a long time, and dust + computers is a bad mix, worst than heat.

We kept all our paint mixing and estimating computers in cabinets with plexiglass front panels, and air holes drilled into the backside for ventilation.

I'm building my own bodyshop behind my house and will also have a dust proof cabinet to keep my computer in.

I set up a cheap desktop in my garage that lasted for several years through hot summers and cold winters. It eventually died, but I don't think it was directly related to heat or cold. It was just an old, cheap desktop with a lot of hours on it.

I picked up a few computer enclosures that have filters and ventilation fans built in. Working great so far.

Operating temperature: 50° to 95° F (10° to 35° C)
Relative humidity: 5% to 95% noncondensing
Operating altitude: tested up to 10,000 feet

We have all kinds of PC's running in a 120 degree 100 thousand foot robotic weld shop, I see no issue.

My 7 year old low end dell laptop has been in a Texas garage for 3 years now. I was halfway hoping something would happen and it would finally break so I could get something better, but not yet. I have some spacers under it to help it shed some heat is all.

Yes, Texas garage, year around. 10° to 110° for 3 years, no problems.

All it does is play music though.
