Hi guys, love this site and decided to put my garage build on here, its dragged out a while due to work/money/other things needed doing etc but back on track now. I bought this garage for £75 off good old ebay and as the advert said I had three days to remove it off site.

What I didn't know was that the garage was formerly used to store a youth clubs mini bus and was not the usual 6'6" high concrete panels, they were industrial 8' high concrete panels & 3" thick :Help::Help:

Anyway on the 19th March 2013 a van a mate and three journeys over three days and it was home

The strip down is underway, boy was it cold and getting more wobbly the less that there was standing. Well worth the price.

shortly after this I got started on the "clearup" section of the workshop, this involved moving the pond (cos the shed had to go there), moving the shed (cos the garage had to go there) luckily my mate has a mini digger at mates rates, fun couple of afternoons too, oh and lifting a large area of decking that had been down a few years, helped by my ever present shadow the Moo who is also a compulsive thief at times and also my dad who was always there to help.

well the base went down in the summer, got a guy to pump the concrete and screed it with a lazer for 170 notes, Moo helped by holding the visqueen down, in case youre wondering about the pipe in the background its the air supply for my double barrel heater which is going to be made out of two of the very large stainless steel beer barrels

Hi yes over here concrete garages are not classed as a permanent fixture and therefore dont need any planning permission, it is probably cheaper to build a blockwork and brick garage but when you add the planning/plans/architect etc it costs far more

well started at the right rear corner after I had pre calculated the concrete base size was 2" wider all around than the external finished panel sizes, and worked my way outwards after marking with multiple string lines and a lazer, I had a mate to set up the first four panels but all of the rest were lifted and walked into place by myself with my wife or my dad popping in the bolts, I must admit the whole thing wobbled like a jelly. The steelwork was constructed by myself stiffening up the build completely, the joints were sealed with a non setting mastic, time to source the roof

decided to go with 4"x4" door pillars and a 10' opening after much deliberation, sitting on a crate drinking beer, the roof sheets are slight seconds and the whole new roof in galvanised and plasticoated sheets was only 250 notes, the seconds part is on the inside and cannot be seen, the concrete panels were jet washed and came up like new, the steelwork cost £300 all in this is as far as ive got now due to the bad weather and not finishing work till 4-30 oh and working most weekends to pay for stuff

I understand the legal distinction, of course, but that looks like a pretty "permanent fixture" to me! What a lot of work.

Zrexxer, the UK planning system is a bit weird at times. A structure can only be 2.5m to the ridge if its within 2m of the property boundary but can be 4m high if its over 2m away.
You also don't need to meet building regulations if its under 30m2 area, so you can built it how you like and with pretty much what you like.:dunno:
I couldn't find anything about permenant fixture in the planning portal anymore so i just assumed that it'd changed.

moodubs, looks like its coming along as a fair old rate.
Lets see a couple of piccies of your cars then.

Well the roofs on minus the apex panels, unfortunately Ive been working all hours at the moment so shes sat stagnant till in warms up a bit and I get some light, just had two pillar drills, one bought one free Ill put pics on the relevant posts soon, funding has dried up at the moment but wont be long before I get the apex panels on (theyre inside the garage) and seal front and back.

That is going to be a good looking structure when it is finished. Will you be using the brick on the open side? Looking forward to seeing pictures of the beer keg heater you are going to build.

In the US, it varies my state and even county but something around 120 sq ft is the max without a permit. However, most structures are stick built lumber. In a "damp" climate like the UK, I can see the longer term benefit of the concrete walls and steel trusses. Perhaps that's a business here that's missing in the wet areas.

Hi Bib, thanks, the front will be shiplap timber to match the shed and fencing, and the doors will be side hinged tongue and groove supported by the 6"x6" box section uprights,

the beer keg heater is similar to your double barrel heaters but instead of the thinner 50 gallon drums uses a thicker stainless steel full size barrel which is slightly smaller in size, the air feed from outside should eliminate the heater using any of the oxygen in the garage and reduce the cold air sucked into the building.

this site is awesome as are the guys on it

hi wasfast, well california is far warmer and dryer than here, I built this because concrete sectional garages can be picked up cheap as chips over here second hand, Im lucky that I am a welder fabricator again after eleven years as a police officer and twenty years as a welder fabricator prior to that with an american company (Air Products) I rekon the whole build so far with new roof sheets has only cost £555 ($850)

Now that really is a cost effective build :)

Similar to what i did with my original workshop. That was a second hand prefab which we had to take down first!

Nice work :)

looking good :)
i painted the inside of my box profile sheets with grafto therm to stop condensation last august/sept, and its actually worked pretty well, i have bare steel panels and bare steel on a car i'm stripping back the paint on and no water/rust/condensation problems this winter, i was using a dehumidifier previously, but i'm going to use that in another garage now

Cheers for that I'll take a look, I'll be fitting a false ceiling in mine at 8' high so hopefully condensation shouldn't be a problem as the warm and cold air won't meet, also I'll be insulating the walls and boarding them over

Looking good, one of the best looking sectional concrete garages I have seen. I hadn't realised these bigger sections were available.

Not sure how I missed this one. What a good looking structure...and I assume VERY solid! Very interesting to us stick construction folks. Thanks for sharing.

Love the dog!

Hi all thanks for looking, yes its coming along nicely albeit slowly due to lack of funds, however weve had a good weekend removing the rubbish that accumulated in front of the garage and managed to sus out the beam spacing's that allow the lights to be positioned correctly.

A small item that has played a massive part in the building of the garage is my little milk crate and block of wood, many an hour sat on that with a beer has solved so many problems

Well finally got a few hours on the garage this week, some more of the roof joists have gone in and bought some more shiplap for the front. I also had two workbenches from work that were being thrown out they measure 4'x3' each and had some castors to fit them too.
