contraction joints

Had a new garage build 26X32, and the contrator wants to put contraction joints in the floor. He wants to make a cross in my floor, so cut from the middle of the 26 feet and one cut from the middle of the 32 feet. I have a drain in the center of the floor so the cutting would stop there. Also the cement is 4 inch thick. Now the floor was poured like 3 weeks a go, some people are telling me it's too late, that they should have done it way earlier, but the contractor is saying that it is ok to wait that long. Just want to make sure I will not be doing this contraction joints for nothing...?

100% they should have been done by now but deciding between doing them and not...They need to be cut. IMHO

3 things about Concrete everyone should know...

When its dry its done.
When its dark its done.
It is going to crack.

My niebors Morton pole building has been up for 25yrs, no cuts or cracks in the floor. Concrete on top of wet packed sand. It can be done.

Ideally you should cut control joints immediately after finishing to avoid random shrinkage cracks. This type of crack usually occurs pretty soon after placement - even if you can't see them until later. At this point, your slab has contracted about as much as it's going to. If it hasn't cracked yet, it probably won't. With that said, cutting them in now won't hurt anything. Contrary to popular belief, concrete cracks in a small to medium size slab aren't inevitable.
