I would like to convert this 3" round electrical box to a duplex receptacle. What do I need to do this?

Thanks

One of these.
When I changed the lights in the garage from the single bulbs to plug in florecent fixtures, this is what I used
For some reason though the attachment holes did not align well so I drilled a couple holes in each galv cover and all went well

Theres several threads on this forum about this exact subject. The search tool is very useful in this regard...

Have to be careful with those.

406.5(C) generally prohibits those covers with single attachment screw.

Personally i would convert to an outlet box...

Ye cannot do it.

The octagon box cover linked is for a 4" octagon box. A duplex receptacle will not seat in the 3" round box.

I have these in my shop & many curses to the cheap sucker (not me!) who put these in.

Best I have found is to get the Leviton 9726C which is available at Home Depot. Its a porcelain base with a screw thread for a typical bulb. However in the side of it is a 5-15 receptacle with an honest hardwired ground.

Now you have presumably opened the can of worms of having an outlet on a lighting circuit which is not GFI protected. But in my mind if you are using the outlet for other lighting, then maybe not so much transgression. Depends on your point of view of the spirit and letter of the law. But it does work great and takes minimal time.

On another thought it would be hard to remove the old box since you are going bigger.
This looks to be metal box so couple of screws and it is out. Or is it plastic. Cannot tell from the picture

Mount an extension box. It doesn't any holes for grounding, so a ground clip to hook up the ground wire
Out of one of the knockouts, use a 1/2" offset ****** to another box that is surface mounted, like a 4" square.
Get a raised cover for the receptacle and a GFI outlet.
Install it all.
Put a blank cover on the extension box.

I forgot to mention, get 2ea 1/2 locknuts for the offset ******

They're available at any big box store
