Converting a Dewalt Impact Driver to 3/8 Impact?

Scored a Dewalt DW056 1/4" impact driver this weekend for an amazing price of $free. :bounce:

Just popped off the nose cone and pulled out the anvil. It looks suspiciously like the dewalt part 608116-00, an anvil for the 3/8" drive impact wrench, just with the whole 1/4" hex quick release.

Does anyone have a DC823 that they could pull the nose cone off of and snag some dimensions of the anvil for me?

I'm hoping to spend $20 on a different anvil to make the conversion.

They do look very similar. The mechanism assemblies have different part numbers but I would GUESS that the parts are interchangable. I would be very interested in finding out also, I have 2 dewalt 1/4" impacts and don't use them very much anymore. Wouldn't mind changing one over to 3/8" impact.

And as far as the 1/4" hex adapters for sockets, they work decent and I use them from time to time but they aren't ideal. I use them for putting garage doors together.

I have one of those adapters, but I am not keen on using it for exactly the reasons stated by GrooveKing.

So, no one has a DC823? I guess I'll be ordering a 3/8 anvil....

Then get the one that greasemonkey recommended. Those adapters are made for impacting.

Thanks for the update and doing the experimenting. Looks like I will be ordering one of those sometime soon.

FYI, if anyone wants to convert to a 1/2" drive, the same as the DW057, here's the parts:

Anvil, 1/2", part no. 608024-00 at e-replacementparts.com
you'll also need a new nose cone (housing)
Housing, 1/2", part no 607993-01, and a new washer, 605854-01

This housing has a larger bearing in it to accept the 1/2" anvil.
As info, the housing for the 3/8 drive is 607993-00. Note how just the last number is different.

A question regarding the anvil/housing/sleeve assembly, i am currently taking apart a DW056, i have the exploded diagram of the parts, however I am not sure how to tackle taking apart the anvil/housing/sleeve assembly....any advice or help is appreciated, or if anyone knows of a website or video, that could help me with it.

Thanks, and sorry if i am hijacking the thread...

There's a lock ring that's about 3/8" diam that you have to dig out of the tip of the anvil. (The 1/4" hex anvil). I used some craftsman picks to dig the lock ring out, then just pull the sleeve off. Once the sleeve is off, unscrew the housing, and everything will come apart.

If you look at the picture I posted on 5/8/2011, you can see the lock ring groove on the 1/4" hex anvil. Also, in the upper left part of the photo, right of the housing, you can see the big washer, sleeve, and part of the lock ring.

I may really upset someone by replying to this thread.... But, is this conversion still working good after some use and abuse?

I want a cordless impact in a bad way...

Pardon my ignorance, but, why would I ever need a 3/8" impact? I have a pneumatic 1/2" and a cordless 1/4" hex drive like this one. I can use a 1/4" hex-to-3/8" square drive if I really need to. I don't expect a ton of torque from this tool.

Again, sorry for the ignorance. I'm trying to justify NOT buying another tool. lol.

I've got both a Milwaukee 1/4" hex and 3/8" Square (Buy one, get one free promo)...I used the 1/4" hex all the time, but suprisingly the 3/8" Square gets alot of use too. Put it this way, yes I would replace the 3/8" Square if it died.

That being said, NO Clue if this holds true with the DeWalt's...I want to say the square drive versions are more powerful then the hex versions. I know my 3/8" Square "Feels" like its got more snot...just went to look at it, My 2650 which is the 1/4" Hex is listed as 1,400 in-lbs which is 116 ft-lbs according to google calculator. The 2651 which is the 3/8" square spec's out at 167 ft-lbs. The 1/2" version in the exact same chassis specs out at 183 ft/lbs.

I know cost is the reason this conversion is done, but if I were doing a conversion, I'd drop the 1/4" hex anvil onto the 1/2" Square :D

You guys did get me to thinkin tho..maybe I should put a 1/2" anvil on my 3/8" I got more 1/2" Impact sockets then 3/8"

I use my 3/8" impact probably 90% of the time. It is by far the most useful one I have. I would say this is the first size most people should get followed by the 1/2" (unless of course you mainly work on semi trucks).

I have a DC823 and use it all the time...it's fantastic for any fasteners that are under 40-50lb-ft, so typically little under the hood things, quick assembly before proper torquing, etc. In the garage working on cars I use my 3/8's more, in the house building with lumber I use my 1/4 more.

I've used the adapters before I had my 3/8's but they make the tool more sloppy and add length that gets in the way in some spots.

Great info and thanks for the information.
I use my Dewalt 1/2dr Impact way more than I use my 1/4"driver ( and I have two of these) so I'm thinking I will convert the one to a 3/8 as I have a 1/2 to 3/8 adapter on my 1/2 Dewalt Impact most of the time anyway

I hate to revive a two year old thread, but I am wondering about going the other way converting the DCF880 (1/2" detent) using the anvil rebuild kit for a DCF 883 (3/8 hog-ring)? The reason being:
- I'm not always terribly satisfied with the breakaway torque on the 880 and plan to upgrade to the 899 in the fall.
- Seeing as I still have the 880, and a selection of deep well 3/8 impact sockets and 3/8 impact swivels, I figured it might be worth it to swap out the anvil if at all possible.

I presume the guts are interchangable?

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but this is the only one I found on Google when I was searching to replace the anvil on the DCF887.

The 3/8 anvil (608116-00SV) works on the DCF887 if anyone is wondering. I mostly use this tool on cars and the 1/4" to 3/8" adapter would get jammed sometimes. I'll just use 3/8" to screw driver bits if I'm every using it on screws.

After finding myself with 3 of those 887s I did the same as Joop on one of them. Works great for what it is.

Did you have to replace any other components to make the switch? Again I am considering swapping the 1/2" for the 3/8" in my DCF880, just looking to see what components may be necessary to make the switch over...

Nothing else needed to be replaced. Dropped right in. By looking at the pictures of the DCF880, my guess would say it should drop right in without anything else too.

Can anyone verify that this will also work on a DCF885? I have a brand new one that I would like convert because I have an 887 as well. I'd like to keep the 887 as is, I like the slow speed for small screws so they don't strip.

Update: purchased the 3/8" anvil and it arrived this weekend. Pulled the gun apart to find that the anvils for the 3/8" and 1/2" impact guns ARE NOT THE SAME... The difference lies in the part of the anvil that runs inside the needle bearing at the end of the wrench:

As you can see, it's part of the existing nose cone assembly, and therefore cannot be removed and replaced without replacing the entire cone.

The anvils, as seen in the second photo, are significantly different in diameter, 1.224" as opposed to the original at 1.350" I'm considering my options at this point as I have opened the anvil and it's mine now.

What do the fine folks of GJ think about the possibility of machining a bushing that would press fit onto the new anvil in order to get it up to the spec of the existing?64429b319887674e0c71dc05eb535ad8.jpg70adf7f1513038cc892fd2747e9e167c.jpg
