Cool little Baldor grinder

Picked this up last night on Craiglist for $20. It is 1/4hp. I'd like to find out how old it is. Anybody know?

awesome find! that thing looks quite solid. Baldor is still making grinders, here in the USA too.

It's a little difficult to see in Elroy's picture, but the serial number on these old grinders appear to be the build date. In Elroy's case 12/52.

What does your serial numbert say???

And here is a 1952 Baldor 6" bench grinder:

The lifting handle is a nice feature.

We claim 1952 only because the serial number is 12/52. It could well be of other vintage but Elroy is a betting man in this situation

Mine has 5/48 on the last line of the ID plate. So May of 1948. That is awesome that something that old still works so well.

Another one, this could easily be from 1954. Have had it since 1970.

Elroy, those are some interesting wheel flanges on your grinder. The flanges should be at least 1/3 the diameter of the grinding wheel. What is diameter of your grinder shaft? I may have a couple of spare flanges that I can send to you.

I totally missed them. You are very correct, and they serve an important purpose. As I bet you already know they are supposed to help distribute the pressure on the wheel under the tightened nuts over a broader and less concentrated area.

Assembled without them the risk of the wheel disitigrating while in use increases considerably. Great catch, course it probably did not escape ol Elroy's critical eye I bet.

I just checked the serial number of my 1/3 HP Baldor buffer. W5-89, so they must have went to a more complicated serial number after that.
