Hi,

I'm in the market for a pressure tester.

This has been covered a few times here on garage journal but i have a slightly different take on it.

Being in Europe i don't have access to the likes of HF etc.

I'm after something US or Euro made etc, no china junk.

I will be using it everyday at work on just about all types of cars in Europe so will need LOTS of adapters.

First thought was Stant but they don't appear to do many euro adapters ?

The Snap on kit (which might be Stant?) has a mega adapter kit available but it's nearly £500 just for adapters.

I know Mityvac make a kit but I've not had much success with my Mityvac stuff.

Any other options i've missed ? I know Mac do one that's China, and a another which is rebranded Stant.

Well I can't recommend a good one. But I can tell you my astro kit has sure been a disappointment. I've had to make multiple changes to the adapters to get them to seal properly and have had nothing but problems with the hose fittings leaking.

FWIW, I have an old MAC pressure tester - which I like a lot, but I don't use it daily or even monthly. The adapter it came with cover most everything I've driven foreign (to the US) and domestic.

Personally I use the Snap On one. Rarely does it give me an issue and when it does the driver takes care of it. The $1000 price tag was rough, but I've tested everything from 30 year old European imports to brand new domestics.

Have one of the Sealey kits at work. It's ****, the adapters leak air and the quick release coupling that goes onto the caps leaks air too.

Is the Snap on kit just a Stant ?

The small kit isn't too expensive it's just the adapter kit that's mega pricey.

The Stant 12270 has been around for longer than I have been alive (and that's a LONG time) !

The pump body is metal. Many tool company sorce this one and just put their name on it. One of the bonuses is that most of the individual pieces are replaceable.

The bad thing is, you might need a box full of adapters to cover all cars.

I like my stant. The downside to stant is having to buy all the adapters. You can use this too http://redlinedetection.com/products/smartfit-universal-cooling-system-test-kit

I have a stant and the redline adapter set.

Either I or someone else in the shop uses it fairly regularly and it has actually fit everything so far, we don't do a lot of euro cars other than transmissions, but we a few now and again.

Its a little more hassle than having the individual adapters, you have to wipe down the neck so it stays put and fit the adapter and put it all away, but its not too bad and takes up a lot less room.

Considering what it would cost for all the individual adapters its well worth the extra bit of time and care.

I think just the adapter kit was like $119 on amazon.

I just bought a Stant pump and Bluepoint adapter kit off Craigslist for a $100. It's one of those tools I have rented from the part store and said if I ever found one for a decent price I'd get it.

You ****. Now I'm gonna have to scour eBay for an adapter kit just like it.

My Stant pump came from eBay with two or three adapters. Those two or three have been everything I've needed...so far. The pump leaked when I got it--which was undoubtedly why the guy was selling it. I fixed it for several years by putting fresh clamps on the hose where it attached to the pump and to the captive adapter. Fairly recently, I had some problems with it, and discovered that Stant makes an upgrade kit that includes a new hose and captive adapter, a larger pressure gauge that goes to 30 psi, and repair parts for the "guts"--a check-valve and leather seal for the pump piston. The prices are not horrible, either.

So, yeah, an eBay pump kit, some upgrade and repair parts, and a bigass selection of adapters...hard to go wrong.

I too have the Stant, but no adapters, so onlyusable on older radiators with the usual metal cap. for newer stuff, I have the mityvac kit. all plastic. was on sale cheap on amazon a couple years ago.

while it is a pain connecting and disconnecting the hose and fittings, it is actually quite useful being that it has all different adapters and screwcaps included. it works great and does what it is supposed to do.

think I paid $30 for it. only downside is it doesn't come with a decent case.

I bought the gm stant adapter when I bought my stant tester, but I've been thinking about buying the red line kit I linked above. Used that kit at work when we didn't have the adapters for that specific car.

I have the stant, Then I found a snap on tester at a yard sale. The snap on I pumped two times and it quit. I figured that was why it was in a yard sale. I need to open it up and see if I can repair it. Does snap on also sell a repair kit?

Spoke with the SO man, he'll do the kit with the adapters for £598, £80 off list.

Still a monster price though.
