Fantastic work!! Very interested to see the process. It'd be really hard for me to hang that on the wall. How much "too high" was the wheel arch? Wondering if the material consumed in making the upper bead line pulled the whole bottom of the panel up some. That's assuming that the upper bead is mostly bending and not much stretching which is what I'd expect w/o knowing how your beading die set works.

it was off by about .375, i think my pattern was off and this caused the bead to be off

I wonder how "accurate" those cars were back in the day??? I imagine as the stamping dies wore, things changed...probably not 3/8" though...

I don't have a clue where to begin praising your work, but this comes to mind: There is an old saying about body work, "It's only metal, we can out think it..." While that may be true for some, in your case I think you have figured out how to talk to metal to make it do your bidding! The pieces you have shown look to be stamped, not hand formed.

I would love to see the demo of patterning. I sort of knew what you were describing but I am a "seeing is truly understanding" type person.

Welcome to the forum and thank you for taking the time to post here.

I once worked with an old ultra talented Portuguese guy who used paper like you to get the shape of a blank off of a part. But he used oil instead of magnets with a ultra thin wax paper. Then transferred it to thicker brown paper. He had grown up in Portugal beating out Aluminum bus panels and gas welding the seams. Magnets wont stick to Alu. and old habits are hard to change...
I just love to work on old cars that were handmade. very satisfying.

well i ended up not being happy with the new quarter for a few reasons. the main one was the body line around the wheel well was a little higher than it should have been. so it is junk, and will be re purposed as a wall hanger.

Just out of curiosity, how many man-hours did you have invested ?

a little more metal work from this week so far.
working on an aluminum gas tank for an OT project. but planishing out the top of the tank

and setting some beads on the lower inner door patch panel for a 32 sedan

a little out of the norm use of a power hammer. we made some stamping dies on the cnc machine, and we using the hammer to test stamp the logo

lots of things have been going on around the shop and havent had a a ton of time to post much so here is a recap of the more interesting things

had to make a brake booster recess for a customers firewall. all hand shaped













had an OT fuel tank to make turned out pretty nice so i figured i would post it. all hand shaped from aluminum







finished up the metal work on the cowl area of the Fiat topolino







this one was a fun one. this 39 chevy was hit going to the local cruise night a while back. they had a hard time find a new door or fender so i was in charge of fixing what was there





started with beating the fender back into shape







mostly roughed out, this was as far as i was going to take it until i could bolt it back on the car



then it was time to start on the new door skin



the plan was to wheel out a new door skin and replace everything from above the body line down. of course when we started digging we found more problems. once the door panel and skin were removed there was a lot of damage done by previous repairs to the inner door frame. so that took some time to fix









as you can see by the final inner pic there was a lot of repair work to be done



putting the new body line in the new door skin



i didnt take a ton of pics making the skin or wrapping it on the frame

then the rest of the came in for me to fit the parts to

started to finish up the fender





and all finished up ready to go back to the body shop ** note, we were not doing the repair on the lower cowl, that is the body shops repair**
