I was in town on Friday and noticed a Cornwell truck near a friend's shop. I stop by my friend's shop then the Cornwell guy stops in. My friend (the shop owner) goes in the truck but I'm not allowed in. The driver says he deals with mechanics and shops only. I said I have cash and would like to look around. Again he says no. My friend walks off his truck and tells him never to return.

Am I being wrong thinking this guy is a douche? Cash is still cash.

He's showing the same astute business acumen that's made Cornwell #4 in a field of 3. Yeah, he's a douche.

I find it hard to believe that company is still in business. You can't buy from their website and their are hardly any dealers left.

With the economy roarin' away like it is , he probably felt he could be picky. :)

Sounds like the Grainger business philosophy.

I placed a big order from Grainger. I mean big, not some thousand or two thousand, but big. Anyhow, I get a email saying just this one time they will let me order, and how I should be a business to buy from them.

Its amazing the attitude of business these days.

he could lose his job choosing to not sell to a single individual he has not dealt with before.

you should ask him if you see him again, if he is racist. if he says he isn't then ask him why he isn't selling to you

I would have told them to cancel the order.

Send an email or call Cornwell and tell them what happened. Be sure to tell them when/where or the driver's name, if you know it. They probably want the business, so perhaps they'll have a "chat" with that driver.

Last week I was walking out of a Chase bank when I see a Matco truck park and the guy started walking to the bank, I asked him if he was open for business and he said "always". He turned around and walked me into his truck. I bought a few things I was going to buy on their website. I don't work in a shop so I never have access to trucks. I thought it was pretty cool that he was willing to stop his personal business after his regular hours to show me around.

ahh yes i have been turned away from trucks before, but not by the driver, usually by someone at the shop they are at. a few time i would see the truck and park in the street and walk over to the truck. sometimes people would see me and ask me to leave, but usually just saying im just here to buy some tools was fine.

i was turned away in a really **** way by a snap-on guy once. he just slamed the door shut and told me to get away, he didnt deal with non-shops. he prob felt like a ***** when my mechanic called and said he saw how i was treated, and pointed out that i knew what i wanted, have my own s-o account, and had the cash in hand. long story short that guy isnt allowed on my mechanics property anymore, and the new dealer will stop by my house from time to time if i give him a call. everyone i've spoken to about the first dealer says the same thing, that he's an *** and a horrible busniess man

I've always wondered about this. I frequently see the SO, Matco, and Cornwell dealers stopping at shops in my area but was never sure if it was appropriate to just walk up. Seems like the real sellers will do business with anyone.

I don't see why any dealer would refuse business as long as:

1. He was parked in a safe and convienant location and had the time.
2. The "walk on" seemed serious about buying vs. merely looking

I wonder if the Cornwell franchise agreement prohibits a dealer from selling to the general public. Maybe that dealer was worried about a franchise violation.

Wow... Thats a Piss Poor Business Decision IMO.. I deal with probably 20 contacts a day concerning Hydraulic Jack Repair, Im Only a Part time'r but i try and be considerate and friendly to everyone regardless of how deep there pockets are. If i Recall the Reason Cornwell cant sell from there Site is because of the Contract between them and the Dealers.

There is a mac and a snap on guy that stops weekly at a business behind my friends business, on occasion i have wondered over and both tool guys have welcomed me inside the truck to purchase what ever i want. As far as the Cornwell truck, i have never seen one in Los Angeles and believe they are a myth.

Wow, i thought I was the only person that happened to. They made it seem like they were doing me a favor by allowing me to buy a regulator from them. I could of bought it anywhere but there was a store close so i stopped in and they gave me this speil about how 'we'll allow this just one time'. F off. i'll order my stuff from companies that actually WANT my business.

Thats a bit rude I used to buy from a snapon guy here in New Zealand I didn't work at a shop or anything but I would email him tell him what I wanted buy it and he would send it to my house sometimes he would even show up at my door. I didn't buy alot from him unfortunatly but he was allways helpfull.

I don't know this Cornwell company but would have thought that they would have welcomed customers.

If the Cornwell man didn't let you on his truck to buy something he was looking out for you. The guy he was selling to must have killed his dog or shagged his ol lady.

Sounds like the Grainger business philosophy.

I can understand why industrial distributors wouldn't want to deal with retail customers. They'd have the hassle of dealing with sales tax for very little gain.

I deal with MSC and McMaster all the time. They don't seem to have a problem with non corporate accounts.

I had no trouble with Grainger (in store). They just asked my name, made it possessive, and appended garage after it. I bought a furnace motor.

I can see a business owner asking someone to leave so their employees don't have to wait while a Driver waits on him.

There's one that covers VNY Airport in the SFV, I've also seen one around the Antelope Valley.
Best tool truck at VNY is Mac, the SO guys truck usually doesn't have enough tools on board to fill a back pack.... Plus the driver wants to shoot the **** all ******** day. I've actually locked up the hangar & gone home just to get rid of him.

I dunno Matt.
The construction companies, tradesman, repair shops and other businesses that Grainger has always marketed to have to pay sales tax on those same products no? They aren't buying for resale. Exceptions would be the institutions/schools/gov. agencies etc.

I honestly don't know.

THANKS bowtie3 !!!!!!!! The Cornwell ratchet JR 30 3/8 drive you had repaired for me is back in the drawer and will be used tomorrow.
I know you went to time and trouble to help, and I wanted the forum, especially Cornwell tool lovers, that all is well now.
Thanks to this forum, as it was the catalyst, for getting this help.
