i have a 1500sq ft garage i want to somewhat cool. im going with a 5 ton packaged unit. i believe its 17kw/hr. im in arizona and would like to keep the garage at 90* or so when its 100 out. i have peak $0.21/kw, and off peak $0.05/hw. what would this unit realistly cost me to run? the garage has R19 walls and R38 roof

Do you already have the 5 ton unit? Your shop is well insulated and I'll bet the 5 ton unit is way to big.
I did a quick run for Ocala FL. (you did not say where you lived)and it said you needed 2 tons. A lot of internet HVAC web sites have free sizing software (it's not great but it's better than just guessing).

Yes, he just did the math assuming it would run flat out. That unit sounds too big (even if the shop wasnt well insulated which isnt the case) and doing that will cause it to short cycle which means it can't dehumidify ( which you may not care about in AZ). First size it right. How high are the ceilings? And if you're only looking for a 10 degree drop, the usage should be minimal. I would gamble that you would end up somewhere between $.25-.50/hr to maintain temps. It would be a little more the first hour to bring temps down.
