Costco CSPS tool box

Howdy new here.
I have the CSPS 56” 23 drawer stainless tool box from Costco. It is great. Except the drawers always seem to creep open by themselves. The box is on a level concrete garage floor. I removed a drawer and I am not seeing what mechanism holds the drawer closed. Any suggestions?
I considered getting some magnets to put at the back of the drawer well and see if it would hold it shut. But I would rather fix whatever is wrong either the current set up. Thanks.

Take it back. That is dangerous especially with kids. I have had a tool box fall over, because of my stupidity. A toolbox with roller slides will fall over in a heartbeat. If you do keep it tie it to the wall SECURELY.

I admit I agree with rancher bill. Absolutely a hazard without something to maintain the drawers closed. I wouldn’t take the chance, and I know it’s a pain in the @$$.

Thanks for the replies. Magnets will stick. I keep my magnetic trays on the side. “Cheap” stainless or not, it gets the job done for me.
I do not have any intentions on taking it back. They don’t have this model available anymore.
I was just hoping that someone had run in to this issue and come up with a simple fix. I’m sure there is an adjustment or something that is worn out. I will look in to it further. Thanks.

First off, welcome to Garagejournal OP!

I don't have any experience with your brand of tool chest, but low friction drawer slides will never open on their own unless the drawer slides themselves have a slight downward tilt (the front is slightly lower than the back). Your floor might be perfectly flat but that doesn't mean every aspect of the tool chest is perfectly level and/or plumb. A minor tilt can be the result of things like manufacturing tolerances, small amounts of play in the drawer slide mechanisms, play in terms of how the drawer slides are attached to the frame, or even by a slight compression of the front casters compared to the back ones.

Before you try a more labor intensive modification or repair, why don't you try placing thin pieces of sheet metal under the two front casters. Start with something thin like 22 or 24 gauge sheet metal and work your way thicker until the drawers stop wanting to creep open. It likely won't take much to get the desired result since your drawers only have a slow creep dynamic now.

I also agree with the other posters here, if your tool chest sits permanently located in one spot in your garage, it's always a good idea to attach it to the wall so it won't fall over if you have an earthquake, if a child decides to use the drawers as steps to climb on, or if too many drawers are ever opened at the same time.

It is common to use 304ss for things like this, 304 is magnetic.

304 is austenitic....non magnetic.

More likely something in the 400 series typical of household goods.

Also not necessarily cheap....martensitic and ferritic stainless may be less corrosion resistant than the 300 series but is often selected for other properties....ie. it can be much harder or can hold an edge. Magnetic stainless doesn't indicate it's cheap.

What you're looking for is likely the detent bumpers.

No idea what slides a Costco uses but there's a direction for you.

Maybe look at accuride detents, or Craftsman...etc. see if something matches what you have.

Take one of those padded rugs you put in front of the sink, and place the two front wheels on it. If the doors stay closed you know a dimension for shims, and in the meantime, it make a more comfortable place to stand while selecting/putting away your tools.

Apparently it becomes magnetic when it is hardened, as when it is rolled into sheets, or cold formed, as a tool box is.

Your garage floor is likely only level in one direction and pitched downward, away from the house (assuming it’s an attached garage) in the other direction to keep water out. The pitch is usually 1/4” per 12”.

I also have a Costco CSPS tool box that is about 25 years old. The shell is SS but I believe the drawers are steel. My drawers also creep open, just a little bit. I live with it.

I might have some direction on this issue. I bought some drawer hardware I found online. My box has 2 different styles of these. They are rubber pieces on the drawer tracks. I have not had time to install them yet. I will update if it takes care of the issue.

My floor is pitched enough to make the drawers want to open on their own. Some 1/4" shims under the front casters solved my problem.

I have tried to contact them. Apparently they are no longer in business. I would gladly buy and install whatever parts are worn out. If I could contact them. If someone has info please lmk. Thanks

A little success! I replaced these “slide detents” today. My box has 2 different styles. So far I have not found the smaller ones. But I replaced the larger ones today on one drawer. It is totally better and stays shut like it is supposed to now. I will be on the hunt for the smaller style. Some are missing completely.
Hindsight I could have maybe flipped them over and gotten some more life out of them. You can see where it is worn down.

I wouldn't give up ball bearing slides to go back to friction slides, no matter the brand. But I do agree with tying them to the wall somehow.

Don't put them on level ground. Seriously. Tilt them back by putting a small 1/8" or 1/4" shim under the front so the lean backwards.

CPSC is the Consumer Product Safety Committee, not the product maker.

Personally, I shim the wheels and anchor back to wall. (nothing serious here, couple of wood screws) with my similar home box. Done.

Right, he thinks you should report the drawer problem to the safety people, not the maker. That’s why he said “The CPSC”

My tool box has 2 different styles of slides on the drawers. So far I have only been able to find the larger detent stops. Unfortunately the majority of the drawers have a smaller detent stops like in this pic. Does anyone know a source for these? I was able to reach in to the back of the box and remove several of the stops on the drawers that seem to be opening by themselves the most. I flipped the stops over and the drawer is now biting on a fresh spot. This will probably work for a while. If I could find some replacements that would be great. I will also look at some kind of shim for the front wheels. Thanks.

There's nothing cheap about 444 steel, and it's martensitic. Lots of stainless is magnetic. My pocketknife is CS30V, yours might be too. That's a stainless martensite and it's a hell of a lot more expensive per pound than 316.

I love mine and the drawers do not creep open as decribed but my garage floor is slightly lower near the wall where my tool chest sits.

But I have a more important question which is where can I find the replacement black end caps for the drawers? Several of mine are cracked due to age and have fallen out. It is cosmetic but it still bugs me.
