Cotter pin removal tool

I'm not getting the whole diagonal cutter thing? What do you guys do with those? Cut the cotter pin out?

I use pliers to unbend the bent end and then either the same pliers to pull out the pin or my cotter pin puller tool.

I'll straighten the bent end with regular pliers or what ever is handy. Then use the dikes to get a real good grip on the cotter pin and use the dike's shape as a lever to pull it out. It may take 2 or 3 different "bites" into the pin as it pulls out. I do not use the cutter to cut off the cotter pin.

Wouldn't standard pliers with teeth work just as good? I'd be afraid of messing up the cutting edge on my dikes.

I have one pair of Crescent HD dikes that are my sacrificial cutters. I use them on things no dikes should have to cut, and to pull cotter pins

Worrying about damaging the cutting edge of a set of dykes would be the last thing I would worry about.

#1 If they get damaged, warranty them, but since a cotter pin is not all that hard, they are unlikely to damage the cutting edges.

#2 Sometimes its faster just to cut the looped end off, and pull out the bent over ends

#3 Cut the looped end off and drive the rest of the cotter pin out with a punch.

#4 The bent head of the dykes can be used as a fulcrum.
