Holy K Rap those are fantastic! My first time seeing this too.
I have not had the time to look threw all the old posts here.
The amazing amount of knowledge, talent, & creativity that is on this forum is almost unbelievable. Soooooooo glad I stumbled upon it when I did. I only wish I had found it earlier.

Those boxes are magnifique' (how do you like that word?) The only problem is that I didn't think of it first:(. I retired as the foreman of an architectural sheet metal shop. We had a CNC router table and CNC folders etc. The owners are friends so I'm gonna head down there and see what I can scrounge. If they are not real busy they let me play with the equipment for home projects.

On a side note, the routing trick can be used on plain 1/8" aluminum also. Gives you a nice sharp outside corner. IIRC we would route to within about .040 of the exposed surface.

I desperately needed enclosed storage in my shop, so I took a break from the daily routine and built myself a small army of cabinets, and I thought I would share the basic design with my fellow garage junkies.

I have more to make - a few large storage cabinets, a few more tables and a 50' long saw table, but this is a nice start. They came out better than expected, I am very happy with them.

Wow! These are truly amazing!

Thanks again, guys!

I appreciate all of the comments!

They were drawn in 3D solids in ACAD Mechanical Desktop. I have Solidworks and ACAD Inventor at work and at home I have SW and ACAD2000, but ...well it is a long story - I still haven't switched from ACAD to SW :willy_nil . I will do so soon - I am just too fricking comfortable with ACAD and can fly through stuff in 3D. I design machines all day at work and the time constraint to make progress prohibits me from making the switch without hearing a bunch of bitching.

Let me fluff up the drawing a bit and I WILL either post it or E-mail it to whoever wants it. You guys want a cut list, too? I will separate the individual parts on the DWG. It won't include all of the drawer slides and stuff, but I will include the sizes for all of the parts.

Each cabinet took about one week with painting and I don't have an exact cost yet - without time (and without the brushed panels) I would estimate about $70 in tubing and about $120 in hardware. I am estimating that they actually cost me about $450 each but I could be way off. I will look at it near the end of the month. Tonight, I bagan another large storage cabinet - I was able to cut all of the tubing and angle, de-burr it all, weld-prep and weld together th basic frame and shelves in about 6 hours. Tomorrow night I should finish the structure and then prep for paint.

There are a few more pics and more details about the construction here:
http://www.hobartwelders.com/mboard/showthread.php?t=15905

The door and drawers are faced with a clear coated, brushed aluminum composite panel. This stuff sells for almost as much as sheet aluminum but it's lighter and pre-finished with an industrial clearcoat from PPG. I got the sheets direct from the manufacturer several years ago - they were off-quality or edge damaged and were slated for scrap. I got a total of about 35 sheets of the stuff.

I would be happy to build whatever for whoever but these things would likely cost a bit to ship. I would have to come up with a price, but shooting from the hip, I would sell cabinets like what you see pictured for probably about $650 -$700 each.....that's a guess, but it would get someone some cabinets. I know it's a bit pricey but they take time to make - it's less than anything else out there that's comparable.

The drawers are riding on the cheapest drawer slides money can buy. I could not afford to buy so many of the ball sliders so I bought the kitchen style, self closing jobs and they work extremely well. The drawers open and close silently and effortlessly and stay in near perfect alignment. They are rated for (I think) 75 or 100 pounds per pair and you can get them for around $3 a set online or $6.50 at Lowes or HD. The ball slides are $14 a set on line or $18 at Lowes or Home Cheapo.

I am building a bunch of other **** now, also. On tap is a large tool box using the ball slides and 16Ga sheet metal drawers - I will post it up when it is done, but it's not a huge priority so it may be a few months...I have to start making some $$ to pay the bills.

Follow that link to the Hobart Forum and check out more details of the shop.

Hey MXtras

Nice work...

But one thing though, it would have been better without those rivets around the edges of those silver panels... I assumed they are composite Aluminium panels - possibly Dibond or Alucabond. And if they are then you can use a product call X-tack 7 from http://www.bi-wize.com/x-tack7_glue, without the need to use all those rivets. I fabricate and install signs, and I used X-tack 7 to clad large Dibond panels to walls and shop front bulkheads, etc, without any mechanical fixings, and the bonding is extremely strong.

Just a thought

Those look amazing. I totally wish I had the skills and equipment to build my own. Where on the right coast are you?

Nice to make exactally what you want/need. I used Gladiator Premier and sadly could not complete the whole back wall wqith their stock line up. Wish I could make one to fit and match!

Enjoy, they shop is really nice and large. is this a hoby shop or a business. Looks great ineither case, just curious.

I like these cabinets so much I just had to bump them up again, it looks like we lost the op, he has not been on for the last 3 yrs, I sent him a message at his business email asking if he ever did try to sell any of his cabinets and invited him back here. I hope he does come back and post more on this project or any new projects that he has done or are doing....Rich..

Amazing work. I'd like to see how they look after eight years of use. Even better, probably.

Just saw this post for the first time. Don't know if anyone with the plans are still around. If they are I would really like to get a copy. If anyone has them let me know. I tried the download links but it looks like they are no longer active.

I really want to build one of these. I cannot see from the pictures on the first page how he hinged the small doors. For the large cabinets I see he build a door frame and used a long hinge that spanned the height of the door. But the small doors on the bench cabinets do not have a frame. I can't figure out what he used for hinges and how he attached them to the door panels. Anyone know what he did this?

Excellent work! When I first see finished pics of amazing projects like this, I think wow, I would never take on anything like that. Then I see a breakdown of the steps, with pics and advice on the build along the way, it does conjure up thoughts in the back of my mind that "Hey maybe I can do something similar that". I love lurking on here, thoroughly appreciating the time people put in to sharing their wisdom & skills with others.

I'd like to add and say those cabinets do like spectacular. They so look like something that would have easily been delivered to you. So jealous of you guys with those welding and metal fab skills. :)

Anyone know the overall dimensions of the carts in the first post? L x W x H?

Amazing build!

The links to the plans are all dead, does anyone have the plans that they can reupload somewhere?

If someone has the plans I can host them on my site and post a link. Should never go away (as long as I pay my bill that is).
