That will take you out, quick, fast and in a hurry. The problem is you may not be aware it's got you till it's over. How old is the unit, you may could replace the heat exchanger if it's worth saving.

They are generally worth saving until the heat exchanger gives out. Unless it is nearly new and that is a fluke, it is time to put it in the scrap metal pile and buy a new one before someone dies.

FWIW, a new set of heat exchanger cells are not much more than what you paid, and you've already done the heavy lifting. Depending on the age of the unit you *may* be entitled to a discount on them.

I don't have his number but I'm going to look for it. I should of asked for a Bill of sale.

Its a Dayton 3E243 but can't find much except on Grainger.com that its discontinued

Menards has a nice 75K BTU for $575

What ***** is I had to but a regulator (80) plus another 60 for the conversion kit!!

We'll see..hopefully I can get my money back..but first I will call authorities if they can "help"

Agreed that this unit is past it's useful life.

The thing that strikes me is occasionally I'll go into a shop somewhere and see a 30 to 40 year old hanging heater blowing away...and it makes you wonder when the last time anyone inspected the heat exchanger was.

We checked 2 of them at our warehouse that were about that age (and supposedly working fine) and both of them had cracked heat exchangers just like the one in the picture...and had obviously been cracked for some time. My point...you need to check this stuff out occasionally. The seller of that unit probably had no idea the heat exchanger was cracked...because it was never checked. Most aren't. They burn fine so people just assume they must be fine.
