I am restoring a Crafstman 397.19580 1/3 hp grinder that I found on ebay. It came without both tool rests. I haven't been able to find any originals so I thought I would make some replacements. If anyone has this grinder I could use some dimensions so I can get closer than I would by just looking at pictures. Thanks.

I made larger than oe rests with 2" sections of 3x3 angle iron for my cast iron grinder. I actually replaced the originals with these.

That's a good looking grinder and nice tool rests. Thanks for the angle iron idea. I could make something like that work.

Did you grind yours flat and square first, or just cut and go?

I honestly can't remember. I bought them cut. The guy at the steel supplier used a 12" cut-off saw for each piece.

So I found a single original used tool rest on ebay. I wasn't about to pay 30 bucks for just one but I used the ebay pictures, parts diagram pictures and other pictures I found here on GJ and created these from 1.5" lengths of 2" steel angle:

Here's a picture of the bench grinder before restoration:

Nice job!

Looks just like the ones in this thread.

Post up some dimensions and a sketch for the next guy.

That may have been the thread that sent me on a search for my own candidate for restoration. I wish I could find the original lamp to add to mine. Here are the dimensions of the tool rests I created:

I haven't been able to find the original lamp for my bench grinder. While searching for a different vintage light on eBay I saw the gooseneck lamp below and thought it might be a reasonable substitute for the original. It was cheap so I grabbed it. From the pictures I have seen, the original lamp shade is similarly shaped but Lamp1.jpgLamp2.jpgappears considerably larger than this one. If anyone has an original can you tell me how the lamp shade compares to this one? Also, I have seen pictures of block grinder lamps with sockets with an on/off switch and some with no switch. I can wire it either way but I am curious how an original is wired.
