Jeremy I will probably have the slide back out as there is a tight spot that I want to look at the screw for straightness. I'll definitely get pics when/if I do. I'm going to post a question on this over on the vise thread. If anyone has a suggestion I'm all ears.

Remove the leadscrew and move the slide in and out by hand. That'll let you know if any deformation is responsible on the slide. If that's smooth as, roll the leadscrew over a flat surface, (a sheet of glass or a marble slab are usually pretty much perfect flatness), with the ball overhanging the edge. You'll quickly see any bends. Various ways of straightening, ranging from a straightening press through to a wooden/rubber mallet, wooden blocks and good old arm power. :D

The paint is Benjamin Moore Super Spec urethane alkyd gloss enamel. The color is Delta dark machinery grey, an older color Delta used (30's-40's) that I had mixed. I don't know if it shows right but it has a slight blueish cast to it...

Since it is a custom mix can you share a picture of the mix label so I could get the exact match if I need it. Thank so much for all the information. Your vise looks incredible.

Thanks Fretters, the lead screw was the culprit. Had a small bow the entire length, and another small bow on the threads only. Much better now, the tight spot is gone completely in the range I'll use most. When extended far it is so slight it doesn't bother.

Thanks Jeremy, I'm happy to have it back to a user state. I've included the paint code and a pic of the can for you. Also a couple pics of the leadscrew and collar.

Econ:
2) can you post plenty of pictures and details how you put the Craftsman badge back on?

Like I mentioned Drives, I didn't take any pics of the badge installation. I did take a pic of a drive screw (in case you haven't used one before), the spiral thread digs in and turns it as you tap it into the hole.

Thought you'd like to see the new color compared to the old. Only bit left is the end of the lead screw. I thought the match was pretty close.

Econ: how did you end up straightening out the main screw of your 5198 that you mentioned that was slightly bent? did you use the wood idea Fretter's mentioned where you place wood on the screw and then hit it with a BFH? or heat or do tell??

i have a 5197 that has a broken vise nut so i'm guessing my main screw might have an issue too and i'll need to check that.

I tried rolling the screw on a piece of glass, but with the handle end so heavy I found it awkward to get a good reading. I set it on the bench with the handle end down and used a straightedge to find the bow. I have an old arbor press I used to straighten it, no heat. Lots of checking and fiddling but got it nice and straight. Good luck with yours Drives.

Awesome job on that vise. Where are the fully assembled pics? That thing is huge! One of these Craftsmans is on my vise needs list.

Thanks bagged, I'm real happy with it. Check out post #38 for the pics fully assembled.

I cant believe I didn't go buy that vise!!!

Then I'd be looking at pics of it in your backyard, that was a long couple days till I got home to pick it up.

You've done it proud, nice job. Glad it went to a good home. Just caught me on a bad day, was off work with other plans, and it was about hour and a 1/2 drive for me. I did get a reply on day one of the ad to my lowball offer though. The vise gods were not happy apparently. Enjoy, It's beautiful!

Excellent job! Really like the mix of new paint and old bare metal.

I'm actually in the middle of a restore on my 5196 and was curious on what you used to clean the craftsman logo? Mine is pretty rusty so it might not be salvageable but I'd like to keep the original look if possible.

Very nice resto even if this is an older thread. I will be saving this in case I ever do find a 519x swivel base !

Econ, I recently picked up a 5196 and am finishing up the painting. What did you place in the oil hole on the moveable jaw? Was there an original part there? Great job on your restoration!

All I have right now is this pic of it in the jaws of a Charles Parker 974, a nice size vise itself. I'll get something later beside a familiar can. But yeah, it's pretty heavy and impressive to hold.

There may be more than style to the tapered handle ends - much less likely to pinch a finger - or hack a chunk out of one - than the usual ends.

Hi,
I don’t know if anyone is still interested, but I had a question about cleaning up the handles.
Got the handle cleaned up, mostly wire wheel and a little emory cloth.

Are these parts chromed?
On mine is the main handle and the lock down nut raw steel or chromed?
Mine has some bright metal left mixed in with some rust. Slight flaking Chrome surviving as the rust takes over?

But you said you used a wire wheel and basically scuffed everything down to raw metal.
That’s fine, I’m just wondering if there was chrome before you did that.

If y’all are not around anymore, maybe I should start a new thread?
Anyway, if I get a reply, great. Thanks for any help, take care.
