I'm guessing this is made in China.

I see there are 3 available in my local store. I think I might run over and take a look at COO. If they are USA in the local store, I'll come back and order online with coupon codes for store pickup. If it is China, I'm moving on.

That is a good deal. I'd get one, but I'm covered up in sizes that go beyond those in that set with my HF large SAE & Metric sets. I was skeptical of HF for that sort of thing at first, but I have not broke one yet, in almost 3 years.

Carbon steel. Pass on this set. HSS is needed if you want them to last.

Ideally, but a HSS set is kind of a hard pill to swallow for someone using them only occasionally.

Unless you find a good used HSS set.

Exactly, I'm not gonna drop 500 bucks on a HSS set when I have yet to need a tap and die set in my lifetime and may only use it a few times throughout my whole life.

I do use my rethread kit a decent amount though.

Got this for $100-$15 coupon - $10 surprise points + $10 in points back. I've already got the gearwrench ratcheting tap/die handles (which are awesome!) so this was the better deal for me. I've been needing to replace a very poor quality kit I've had for a while.

FYI you can't redeem points and earn them in the same transaction.

I made this mistake once...redeemed 50 cents in points and forfeited $20 of future points. :( They don't really give you much warning either.

I do it all the time. I've did it just a few days ago. Redeemed $20 in points and got $10 in bonus points back on one item in one transaction. Sometimes the coupons don't work properly or they disable some on hot deals but if you call SYWR they can usually fix any points problems.

Not true, I redeem and earn on pretty much every transaction. But, sometimes the future points require minimum pre-tax thresholds.

Went down to sears for some misc yard items. Stumbled upon an old stock 75pc tap and die set. USA made so I picked em up. With coupons and syyr about 80$. Only date I could locate was on the front. Said 1/95
Are the old ones much better than the new?? Wasn't sure if I should keep em

That is really cool. I travel a lot for work and frequent stores all across the country... never seen a set that old still in stores.

Bought a Craftsman T&D set 5 years ago, used it for a small job, the tap got dull real quick returned it, was suprised it was so crapy. I have a load of Craftsman hand tools, they are good by me serve me well. The T&D not something I'd suggest as a smart purchase.

Damn....sitting on the shelf almost 20 years :wtf:

I believe you've found the lowest volume Sears in the Country, and that's saying something. Should've grabbed New Britain era ratchets while you were there :lol_hitti

So are these tap and dies sets a big no no? Ive tried cheap sets in the past and they seem to break so easily. Even when taping aluminum I have had the cheap ones break. My local Napa carries American Vermont brand. Just in singles though. Ive had ok luck with those. But again, I have had them break when they shouldn't have.

Is the Gear wrench a good set to buy? To me having a good set is worth it. I just don't know what is a good set. Nothing is worse than trying to drill around a broken tap and then have to go buy a helicoil kit because the hole is so jacked up by the time you get the old tap out. And those kits cost like 30 or 40 bucks depending on size.

I'm still searching around for a "good" set of T&D that's not extremely high priced. I just don't have enough need for them to get a large set of the best ones. Yet, the ones on the lower end of the price range seem to get a lot of bad reviews. This might be one type of tool where expensive is the only real option.

The Irwin Hanson "Performance Threading System" sets and the similar Gearwrench sets are both good mid-grade sets suitable for a home shop and light pro use. Irwin OEM's T&D's for some of the trucks as well. I believe my Mac TD117COMBOS set is comprised of Irwin sourced T&D's, drill bits, and extractors.
