I saw this bench grinder on ebay and was curious on everyone's opinion if it is a good buy or not. It is an older craftsman model. 6 inch with 1/4 horsepower and 3450 rpm and 4.5 amp, i think. would be using the grinder for very basic jobs but i have come to the understanding that an older grinder is probably a better quality product that today's stuff. Please let me know.

That's what we've been calling a "pre-block" grinder. The members that have them, love them. Even though it's only 1/4hp, it should out perform a new grinder (as long as it runs) with the same or higher hp because at some point the formula for determining hp has changed so that the mftr's can cheat.

It may need some maintenance due to age to get it to run smoothly again. But don't let that deter you.

Why are you still reading, you should be in you're car picking it up right now. :3gears:

Figure in the $25 - $50 range, depending on condition.

Check out this thread for more info about Block Grinders (and pre-blocks) :

I'd keep looking for a 1/3-1/2 hp unit that has enclosed sides. The grinders are pretty common.
