You have it tensioned at the wrong point. Try releasing the tension, and turning it the other way. Don't feel bad, it took me a few tries to get mine right after removal.

By that you mean turn it counter or clockwise? Also I am assuming the quill should be raised up before the spring is inserted?

Re: The Classic Craftsman 100/150 Drill Press

Raised quill, turn counter. When you lower the quill, the post inside turns clockwise, so you are pre-tensioning the spring. How much tension is a trial error.

So here's the decal I had replicated. Just put it on. Let it dry 24hrs then clear it to protect it. Looks darn good to me. Picture makes the decal look slanted.lol

Looks great ND!

So I see you retained the push/pull rod/switch. Is push off? And if not, can you make it so? (safer)

Thanks Outlaw. Yes I kept the push/pull switch. The whole machine is wired to work with a foot pedal. When the press is plugged in and so is the pedal, the press won't turn on unless the pulley is pulled towards the user. Push the pulley away and it turns the power completely off. So if the pedal is stepped on nothing will happen.

Dp#28

Yet another iron in the fire... I took quite a hike today to get dp#28 - Jackson. It's a model 113.24560, Emerson's 3rd generation of drill presses. I believe the first gen with the skinny belt and wider range of speeds. I'll have to do more research.

It's got a couple very nice goodies and several disappointments.

Pros:
Aux table and working Pressmate table lift.

Cons:
It's missing the belt cover and front plate. The return spring and pulley spline shaft are both wonky.

Mehs:
It came with an inappropriate 3450 rpm GE motor.

The only manual I could find for model 113.24560 showed the older pulleys for 1/2" wide belts. The head frame casting is identical. I'm beginning to wonder if the spindle pulley and motor pulley were from a newer machine. I think it may be a hybrid machine.

Another difference is the feed handle knobs. They are a softer rubber and shaped different than previous versions.

3/19/2017

Well, I figured out why I didn't recognize those feed handle knobs. They were a custom job. I think they are automatic transmission gear selector knobs from an older Chrysler product, from the '70s perhaps.

I was VERY skeptical about the skinny belt also, but it actually works and wears well. They ARE still available too, but not easy to find. Internet order was what I found (I can try to find that if you need it)

They apparently had more than one model that used that skinny belt; here is the one I cleaned up:

Craftsman Authorized Distributor Sign

After I picked up dp#28, I stopped for this 24" x 48" lighted Craftsman sign - Brooklyn; another craigslist find. It didn't work until I bypassed the broken switch.

3/30/2017

I finally moved some things around and hung the sign. I also added an embellishment. LoL!

Frank; that's awesome!

Thanks. Several other components could have prevented it from working, so I was thrilled that it was just the switch. I already have an identical replacement switch on the way. I just need to touch-up a couple scratches and find wall/ceiling space to hang it.

I remember, cause I turned a walnut one for him, cause the OEM one split, and was coming off. .....LOL

Frank, from a long-time subscriber to this thread, that sign seems perfectly appropriate for your shop. :rocker:

That could very well be. I learned to drive on Chrysler products from the '70s and they seemed similar to what I remember. But then my memory ain't what it used to be.

That is cool, especially with you history of craftsman tools.
You need to find one that says "Authorized Repair"

LoL! I'll get one if I find one.

Hi Guys,
I picked up this Craftsman drill press for my son's 25th birthday and part of the gift was that we would restore it together. It is a "Mohawk" 103.0303. Now I need a little help.
View media item 69179
The pulley bearings attach to the main body on a finish ground sleeve.
View media item 69180
First this spring slides over the finish ground sleeve.
View media item 69181
It is a nice close fit.
View media item 69182
The bearings end up inside the upper pulley and set screws hold the pulley on the bearings. But first the bearings are pressed on the sleeve.
View media item 69183
So here is my question; what is the spring for? or is it broken and I only have part of it? The original bearings said Craftsman on them so I think the drill press has not been apart before. The bearings sit flush with the top of the sleeve and the spring can move up & down maybe 1/8 of an inch. It seems as if it serves no purpose? It looks like both ends of spring were cut(meaning cut when manufactured) and not fatigued and broken off. Am I missing a part or is spring broken? any one know.

Thanks Guys and sorry for photos being sideways I was not able to fix that despite the last half hour trying....

Greg, you are referring to the spindle pulley, correct? I will try and get out tomorrow and look under the .0303 I have to see what it looks like. Perhaps to make sure it doesnt get driven into the head, if the spindle catches on the way down?

Yes The spindle pulley. If you get time, try clicking on the link where the picture is supposed to be in my post and see if picture opens. Not sure why pictures aren't there...
Thanks for your help,
Greg

The spring is fine. It's a spacer/stopper. The bottom bearing sits right on top of that spring.

Thanks guys! I guess my Drill press is not broke or missing any parts. I just wasn't sure why King Sealey would use a spring and not a solid bushing. It was built during the war so maybe it was hard to get bushings then.

Thanks Again. I'll post pictures when it is done.
