Craftsman Griplatch

Just trying to get an idea if its a good deal, local Snap On guy has this on a trade in and willing to sell for $800. I have multiple smaller boxes but just moved into a new shop and need a more centralized tool storage if that makes sense.

In the store that combo usually runs about 1200 I believe.

Check it out at your local sears store. To me they feel a mite flimsy. Probably be fine for homeowner use

Yeah it still has some cleaning up needed that he said has to do, he just said to let him know. Im not exactly in a rush but would like to get something in the next month or so.

I will take a trip over to the local store since i have some tools to exchange anyway.

How much would you offer him realistically? You know these Snap On guys are trying to make a profit lol.

I know this is will sound so cliche but you should spend your money on a better quality box. I am in no way saying that you should rush out and spend thousands on a box but that crapsman is not a good deal. A used snap on box even if its from the 80's will be leaps and bounds better than that. Again, Im only saying this because I have thrown my money in exactly the same direction as you are considering and I wish somebody would have said something before. Heck, I bought my kr650 for $950 and it is a tank compared to the old craftsman grip latch. Its your money, spend as you see fit but I wouldnt feel right if I didnt at least try to point you in a better direction.

I would look it up on Sears.com. Usually in October most of there storage goes on sale for 50% off. I know that I Bought my 52" for less than 1000 a few years back. I have since sold it for 400, and bought my epiq.

In general I think Griplatch is great, far better than my plastic Snappy slide-to-left. It's possible once in a blue moon to have something roll under the internal latch making it difficult to open that drawer, but I've only had that happen once in 11 years.

I wouldnt pay 800 for it myself. If he wont come off the price either find a good deal on a better quality box or just get a HF.

I would offer him 5-600 and watch for the next 50% off sale if he doesn't want to go a bit cheaper than the $800.

This. That middle, single drawer 40" box is around $260 by itself. I see two 40" drawers. They are very nice to have.

Don't forget it has the single big middle drawer. I had a Griplatch, really liked it.

I have a similar 3 pc setup (my bottom chest doesn't have the full length drawer though ) for over 10 years now and it has held up well . And all 3 pieces were made in the USA when I bought mine. I have added some extra drawer guides and recently picked up a side locker from Menards. I also got my set for 50% off, which is the only way to buy it. With that said, I would look elsewhere like Menards or Harbor Freight, their quality is much better for a homeowner type box. But if you want to get it I wouldn't offer anymore than $400, and less if those dents look worse in person.

Im in the minority here and think those Craftsman boxes are every but as good or better than the almighty HF and being USA made is a plus. The grip latch is way better than the latch on the HF or the detents. You could probably get it for less with cash from him. All he can say is no.

I have that exact same box. Wife bought it for me two years ago on sale for $900 without the mid box. I think $700 to $800 is a good buy for that stack with the mid box if it is all in good shape.

My biggest issue with it. I am 5'10" and can't see in the very top, so I use it for storage instead of daily use stuff. With the mid box attached it would almost be too tall for a shorter person like me.

700-800 is about right on the nose. I doubt he'll have it long.

It's not a terrible deal if it's in new condition. That is Craftsman's top-of-the-line, if that means anything.

EDIT: After looking more closely at the pic, that's not a good deal. The top badge is broken and I see several dents. Granted, a new badge is < $10, but it looks like it's been beaten up. I'm not sure it's worth half off, but that's just me. Ultimately it's your decision what it's "worth." Brand new that would run around $1600.

I don't think that is/was Sears top of the line box. Their pro boxes came with the tubular locks and better casters that the box in the picture has.

I'd offer $550 take it or leave it.

Sears had (maybe still do) industrial quality boxes. I don't know if they utilized Grip-Latch or not. The box in question is a high level DIY box in my estimation, but would do good service in light commercial use. I have a similar setup at home but without the full width drawer bottom and no intermediary drawer as those cost a bit too much I thought. I don't think $800 is an horrible price, but I would be more likely to buy at around $600 given it's used and has some (light) damage.

I have that same exact box (I think), I got it at Sears as a "scratch and dent" for around $700 with only minor scuffs that would happen from ownership eventually anyway. It was supposedly about a $1000 off the regular price.

For the price I paid, I'm okay with it, but no way would I pay full price. It does what I need it to and looks nice and will probably last for a long time, but I don't like the latching system, it feels very flimsy to me and the sheet metal is very thin.

Without question, I think the toolboxes Harbor Freight sells are higher quality. I just don't like that bright red color they sell. I would also look at Costco and Lowes for their stainless toolbox they sell.

But the Craftsman not a bad at all for a homeowner.

That grip latch really ***** ***. I own the same setup and I have regretted the purchase everyday I use it. It would be fine for home use, but on a daily basis it kinda *****. The worst part is how shallow it is. The slides tend to stick. The locks really ****. Mine fall out about once a month. But for $800 bucks it's not a bad price. My personal experience, I would never buy another craftsman box again

i have an older one like that in black. they are way better quality than the kobalt stuff they have now. i was impressed with it when i got it loaded down. most of the drawers slide great even over loaded. ive had it at least 10 years or more.

650 for the harbor freight brand new. missing one full length over the sears, but im not sure if id go 800 on it. 600 id go ahead and get it. probably why he told you 8, so you could settle a deal at 6 or 7, IMO.

I believe that is just the heavy duty line. Back then they had 75 lb drawer slides on them.

A NEW heavy duty premium w/ 100 lb drawer slides is $699 new at Sears, minus 3%-6% bought thru eBates, add in the middle drawer which is *always* on sale for $199 and you're around $900 out the door for a NEW setup similar to that, except it doesn't have the full length drawer on the bottom box.

I paid around $800 for the same set up because I got an additional $100 discount with all the trouble I had getting boxes.

After it was all said and done, personally, I like the grip latch over the HF44 box. The HF however is an excellent box and can be bought for around $640 + tax on sale ($359 + $279). If your job involves you moving your box around much hands down buy the HF44. It's much more suited to that with better casters.

I bought the same setup minus the middle drawer from a snap on dealer 9 years ago for 800. I do like the box. Its got better sliders and feels solider then the hf44. I don't plan to get rid of mine anytime soon. I did move one drawer around too

They JUST had the Craftsman EDGE combo on sale last week. I want to say it was around $800, maybe $900.

I have a similar Cman Griplatch setup ... less the top full width drawer and with a few added drawers in the lower right side. I'm not a pro and don't use the box on a daily basis, but I've been quite satisfied with it. The $800 price for the set seems rather high as Sears has the boxes on sale periodically, but if you can get a couple hundred off the price I'd go for it. BTW, I really like the double full-width drawer setup.
