Craftsman in pawn shops

A lot of new SBD Craftsman items are showing up in the local pawn shops. This is new stuff that has only been in the local Lowes stores for the past 2 months. I don't get it. Why would people take this stuff to pawn shops for pennies on the dollar when it could be returned to Lowes? At one pawn shop I picked up a 3/8" digital torque wrench for $49 this sells at Lowes for $179. I also got a set of 3/8" impact sockets for $29 which are $45 at Lowes. These had not even been opened. I picked up some other new Craftsman stuff at that shop. Another pawn shop has the new stubby ratcheting wrenches and another shop has the new 72 tooth flex head ratchets. It just seems strange that this much new stuff is showing up in the pawn shops.

That's what I thought at first, but it seems to be to much stuff being dumped at to many places. It would almost have to be employees. Maybe Lowes is really lax on security.

Some people open up credit cards, make a bunch of purchases on credit, and then pawn the items that they purchased. The trick is that they never pay back their credit card.

And yes, they don't care about their credit score.

Just another form of theft in my opinion.

I like this one. Hopefully the guy was wearing something under the black trench coat.

You just described my scumbag brother perfectly.

He had 5 credit cards, and he would buy stuff with them. Then he would take the stuff to the local flee market and sell the stuff for cash. Then he would spend the cash on scratch off lottery tickets.

He never had any intention of paying off the credit cards, and he owed somewhere around $20,000 on them by the time all the accounts were shut down. In N.J. you can't use a credit card to buy scratch offs. So he basically stole stuff using the credit cards.

To this day he doesn't care about what he did, or how doing things like this effects the credit card interest rates for others.

Around here, pawn shops are required to have the police check out any new arrivals against their hot sheets before they can sell it. If anything pops up, they lose it. Also, remember, if it is truly pawned, there is a period of time for the pawner to repay the pawn shop and retrieve their item. If the period lapses, then the pawn shop can sell it.

Some buy the super sets on sale, part them out. I have seen this at fleas.

Not a chance you'd make money by pawning the components in a set.

Also, remember, if it is truly pawned, there is a period of time for the pawner to repay the pawn shop and retrieve their item. If the period lapses, then the pawn shop can sell it.

That only works for things that have serial numbers, and have had their serial numbers documented as part of the theft investigation.

Just because a similar or the same item is on a hot sheet doesn't mean the police can waltz in and take it out- they have to prove unequivocally that the pawned item is the stolen item. That means a level of documentation that most victims of theft, even corporate ones, don't have the time or inclination to do. The store that got robbed has most likely already started proceedings or even been paid by their insurance before any cops are walking into pawn shops.

My ex ****’s dad runs a pawn shop here in Southern Ohio. He will only buy tools if the person pawning them is knowledgeable of the items when questioned. If someone’s response is, “I dunno, they’re tools”... that’s his first indication they’re stolen and he will turn them away.

He gets a lot of “new” DeWalt 20V sets coming in the door. He rarely takes them because he has too many as it is and they’re usually stolen from Home Depot. Got a lot of my tools from him at or near cost. Saved a ton of money! That was the only good thing to come out of that relationship. I’d like to hit her with my car.

Lots of guessing going on here but it's clear to me that this is the result of a GJ member's wife buying him a set of Lowe's chinese Craftsman tools, clearly not knowing the difference. Quite clearly he couldn't get rid of the junk in the classifieds here or any respectable place without embarrassment, hence the member was forced to sell them to the pawn shop.:lol_hitti

Odds are stollen or otherwise scammed

On the good side they prices are reasonable.
Local pawn shops around here, if it’s $179 regular price and $149 when on sale. They want $175 for it

Make sure you make it a good hit or go back and forth a few times. I've heard a stake through the heart can help to be sure they can't hurt you anymore.

Haha, of course she is, I dated her. I’d give her a 9 out of 10 on looks and a 0.5 out of 10 on personality.

It’s been 2 years and I’m still single. Dating in your 30’s is like rummaging through a dumpster fire looking for the least charred piece of garbage.

That is so hilarious and true.

It sounds like you might be doing them a big favor, by not dating them.

If you think it's that bad at your age, wait 'till you hit your 50s. I've pretty much given up.

Thankfully I am not in the dating scene. I have been married going on 21 years. I didn't do that well at the dating thing the first go around. Now that I'm 44 I can't imagine it would be any better the second go around if something ever happens to my wife, like her finding out how many ratchets I have or how much I have actually spent on all my tools. I guess in that scenario I probably wouldn't have to worry about dating anyway.

Wait, how did we go from tools in pawnshops to middle aged dating? It doesn't matter, this is still interesting.

Dating in your 40’s is like shopping at Goodwill

A coworker used to say that when you are dating in your 60's the odds are good but the goods are odd.

When a pawn shop is selling something for close to what it would sell for on CL they paid less than half that, and somebody needs a real good reason to sell things at half price instead of CL.

San Diego passed some law making stealing less than $950 in one day from the same store a misdemeanor, no arrest, usually cops won't even show up and then its a ticket.

A law like that probably makes for a lot of theft.

And then those same Leftist judges complain that[emoji1781]there’s nothing they can do[emoji1781] about mounting crime.
If there’s no detriment to committing a crime then those so inclined have the perfect justification. Don’t blame the criminal so much as those that enable them in the first place.

I went to another pawn shop today. I haven't been to this one in a while. A lot of the SBD Craftsman stuff in this one also. 100 or so wrenches of various styles in complete sets, ratchets and a few other things. This shop also had some old Craftsman stuff, going back into the 40's. The pawn shops are carrying nearly as much new Craftsman inventory as Lowes.

Probably stolen, hot, purloined. This shrinkage gets passed to all of us. Too bad the databases aren't more accurate. If the LEO's notice the same dirtbags continually pawning tools over and over, it's a sign they're stealing the stuff.

Pawnshops are supposed to keep records of the person's ID, but who knows they probably look the other way to pick up some great items for next to nothing. And some scumbag meth head doesn't care if the amount they are given is low, as long as they can get a hit of meth/crack.

A small percentage of these items might be legit. If a person isn't good with finances, they might actually pawn these tools to make end's meet. Even though they're getting like ten cents on the dollar and will have to pay dearly to replace the stuff. Me, my toolboxes are a black hole. I only buy tools, never sale. lol. I save so much by doing my own work, that the tool cost is minuscule in comparison.
