That's a desirable ratchet for a few reasons. The "butterfly" selector and the quality of the ratchet overall. I have a few that I use regularly. Late 50s/early 60s production run.

Have not heard from gearwolf in a bit. He is our leading expert on that stuff. I dont really collect newer craftsman stuff like that, but late 50s sound about right

I guess I just always assumed the RP Ratchets came out when that teenager invented the mechanism in the late 60s or whenever that was.

Didn't realize they already had that ratchet body/style.

I always liked that style of selector because there was little chance of accidentally switching it (as your thumb is right there with the later knob) but the V knob is big and easy to switch when you want to.

It replaced the short lived (‘57-‘58) long lever switch ratchets. Sears may have made the design change because the long lever was prone to damage?

Check out the link below to the Craftsman Ratchet type study. Your ratchet is discussed on page 1, reply #10.

I like that they refer to the selector or Flying V as the Star Trek ratchet. I'm a big TOS fan, never thought about it until I read the article...who knows... maybe the designer of the Star Fleet Delta insignia was inspired by that ratchet wrench selector?

Wrench97,

I don’t think the website dropped the images. I think you have to be signed in as a member of the site to see them.

At one time GearWolf had a number of videos on You Tube with the history of Craftsman ratchets. It was interesting and since I watched them more than once drove my wife nuts. If still there a good history and explains many questions I have seen recently on this site. His most asked question was what is this worth. People who were hoping to retire on what they found and he had to respond you can get a cheeseburger meal for what you can sell it for.

Interesting that the "V" selector, the subject of a design patent, is claimed as an ornamental feature. There are no claims about improved ergonomics or mechanical features.
