LOL. Thanks for the idea but I already got a blue handle one for WAY cheap because it has a nick in the handle. Doesn't matter to me but it dropped the price on ebay.

I have one, too. It is in nice condition. I also have its cousin by Herbrand with a long extension and a plastic grip. Don't recall paying more than $20 for either, but I've had the Herbrand 20 years and the Craftsman about 15 years. I know I got the Craftsman at a swap meet in Alabama. The Herbrand was dead stock at an auto parts store in NJ.

The ell handles, item 4 in Outlaw's catalog page post are also quite uncommon these days. I don't know if Sears Craftsman ever had them in 1/4" drive, but would love to have a good one. I mess with old electro-mechanical devices other than cars. They are great for holding the "nut on the back" and slip off less easily than a regular wrench. I have found a couple each 3/8" and 1/2" and a Proto 3/4" but it only has the drive on the short end. I suppose the other end is for the pipe!

Doom - I've spent the morning trying to find it, but I can't remember where I originally found it on the internet. I should have saved the info, but well, you know how it goes. I did the search a year or two ago (maybe three).

I do remember that it was around the same time that the patent for the butterfly selector was done. That patent for the butterfly was applied for in 1958 and approved in 1959 (can't find that one at the moment either), so the speeder had to have been done at that time as well.

Right now, I just don't have an answer for you, sorry.

I found this thread thru an online search and this looks like the longest one for these on GJ so here goes; 2 landed in my mailbox on the same day...

One w/blue handle;
One with ? handle; :dunno:

I need to clean them up good and look at the internals for a possible rebuild but they both feel fine? :p

Two of the spinner ratchets! OK how much did you have to pay for them. And don't say $2 ea!

Well, I just got back from checking my super secret parts stash. I had to sneak past the living trees in the magic forest, feed the dragon, and kick the three headed dog in the nuts, but once I finally remembered which gargoyle to poke in the eye to open the door, I found that I have all the parts I need to rebuild the ratchet. :bounce:

Now I just need to get the damned thing apart.

Outlaw - You're probably right, I wasn't planning on playing with the handle anyway though.

Sounds like foreplay :pimpflash

I really want to find one at a yard sale or estate sale... but I think I will have to settle for paying a premium for one on EBay. They seem really useful.

Damn, I thought I was doing good at two.
I bet I got mine cheaper then he got his.
I got both of mine at a yard sale for fifty cents each.
I paid and ran back to my car before any one could change their mind.

After a few years of looking for a nice one, about two years ago, I found it (background). Well, late last week, I found another one (foreground) in slightly better condition.

I have spent a lot of time in pawn shops and tool stores, and still have never seen one of these in the wild...

These are my two. One I bought off a member here for $100, my first speeder, and the second I just bought this past Saturday for $10. Both are the Blue handled which is cool.

I have spent a lot of time in pawn shops and tool stores, and still have never seen one of these in the wild...

I saw one in the wild about five years ago, and the guy wanted $75 for it. It was in bad condition to include a poorly centered "hang hole" drilled in the handle, a lot of finish loss, plenty of rust, and a good scrape on one side of the plastic handle. I passed on it.

I got my first one on eBay a couple years ago and paid full market price for it. There were a few other bidders going after it, so i didn't get it for a you **** price. I got my second one last week from a full time "tool picker." I got it for a reasonable price given its condition, and didn't have to duke it out with other bidders on eBay.

Those Cman speeders show up on eBay almost every week in conditions that can range from junk to top collector quality. Regardless of condition, every seller thinks he/she is sitting on a $100+ tool. Most that I see are user quality at best and probably not worth more than $40 - $50 at best..... and that should include free shipping. Anyway, the best place to find one is probably on eBay.

omg, last year i happen to find a large box at an estate sale of a tool sales man with about 125 new ones in it for $38......I had no idea of the value, I made metal sculptures creatures out the tools. I used them as the body of caterpillars, spiders and ants, bent wrenched as legs and welded them to it:(

Sounds like the Kirk Wrench.

By the way, there's another topic here about offset ratchet adapters, which could be similar to these little speed spinners (minus the counter weight), with a swivel extension plugged in (and smaller versions of those can be made with a single ball bearing, or a piece of hose, etc). I like the functionality of such Z swivels, because they can be rotated with one hand, whereas a T swivel requires two hands.

As far as rotating a sliding T swivel, it doesn't require a weight balanced handle unless it is being free spun, so I don't think that's really necessary for rotating a Z swivel. Not that there's anything wrong with balancing it, or maybe this is optimal for certain situations too.

The Craftsmans are cool, in an Art Deco kind of way, regardless.

A pencil sharpener was patented in 1934, but never produced.

Of course, a ratcheting one was...

You should list it in the classifieds, I am sure some one here will want it.
I ended up with 3 and I traded one of mine with a member here on G.J. and back down to only 2, But if I was to find another one cheap I would once again add to my collection.
