Have a 20" metal older craftsman toolbox, the latches are plain worn out and I need new ones. Tried sears and that was a waste of time.

Anyone got an idea where I could get latches that fit?

I was missing a key and googled "craftsman toolbox lock" and found it. $31!

I ended up taking it to a locksmith and they cut new keys with the three digit code on it--$5.

As you need the lock, be prepared to pay. :(

No no its not the lock at all. Its just the latch that closes the box and its on a small 20" portable tool box.

are you talking about these things? If so, its probably easier and cheaper to replace the entire tool box, unfortunately.

yep thats it. Id replace the box but the new ones are all cheapo plastic at sears. I might buy another box and use the latches, they are only riveted on.

I see used "vintage" Craftsman metal tool boxes at garage sales and on craigslist , all the time, and usually cheap and in good shape. Thats where I would try. Here's one, for example, its an 18"er for $10, probably could get it for $5. http://bend.craigslist.org/tls/5166344260.htmlIts even a crown top!

Finally got around to ordering them. I wound up getting them from sears.com (amazing I was able to find them! It took some time and I hadnt been able to find them previously!) They are a near exact match. Turns out my box must be from the 70's as I have a similar known 80's box of the same type and the latches match closer to the 80's box. But no big deal. I drill out the rivets and thought I had the right size but looks like Im off to the hardware store for some.

I think I might paint it up nicely. The bottom is rusting from work use and the outside has some big scratches on it.

How about some pics? Some of us are fans of the portable Craftsman tool boxes. I have two of the Rally Boxes, they're fantastic for going on top of a workbench. Best part is that you can find them for about 1/3 of the cost of a new similar-sized box and they're near bulletproof.

That's where I finally found the ones I needed. I actually googled the model number on the box an it brought it up. I hadn't realized there was a part number its lightly stamped
