I'd never seen one of these before so of course I had to buy it. Gave a c note on a whim.

Were these made many years? Do thet have an official name or nickname? Was it toolbox only or did they come with a tool set?

I normally don't even consider restoring old boxes but this kind of has me thinking.

JoCoSawdust has the encyclopedic 411 on these. If he doesn't see this, PM him. Or search Long C thread or this forum on 'Craftsman lunchbox'. He has left a mini tutorial on them somewhere.

I have one its pretty cool. Keep some circle h stuff in there. I think they are referred to as dome top boxes.

I have my dad's, kinda rough, from the early 1950s. I used this one at university in the second half of the 1970s.

I think I sold mine to jocosawdust for $15. $100 is a lot, in my opinion.
It was a spur of the moment thing. I've gotten a ton of other great deals from the guy so I'm not too worried either way. Plus it has what I assume is the original hand carry tray.

I think they ebay for 100$ or more. You certainly won't lose any $$ on it

With that type of locking system, the OPs box is 47 or 48 according to the catalogs. For those two years, they weren't sold with any tools in them.

Here's a write up I did. I need to update it with some additional tidbits I've discovered but it does lay out the changes seen in the catalogs from year to year.

Market prices are all over the map on these things. I've had one given to me and I paid 200+ for the prewar version I have. There's one particularly obscure one (the largest every sold, only in 1946) that I'd give a kidney for if I ever find it. It's the only one I'm missing.

I’ve been hoping to find one of those for a while, although I have a friend that I think would like it more so I’d probably pass it along to him.

I saw one come up for sale online late one night recently. Seller didn’t seem to know the brand or much of anything and the pictures were awful. I think they had it listed for around $15-20. Someone else must have also deciphered what it was because it was gone by the morning. I doubt opportunities like that will come up very often.
