This was mixed in among my Grandfather's tools after we inherited them.

I haven't been able to find anything out about it online, other than some google image search results showing thumbnails for ebay auctions that no longer exist.

It appears to be a device that fits in the chuck of a drill and turns it into an 'impact' tool, with a 3/8" square drive on the end.

Anyone know anything about these?

Neat, I've been looking to get my hands on one of those kinds of devices for one of my drills but its kinda hard to find them now; didnt know Sears used to make them. I have only B&D drills since their batteries are easy to rebuild and they dont make a nicd impact driver and am too cheap to convert so if you're in the same kind of boat I am its a pretty useful tool. It is a bit bulky though so it wont fit into tight areas.

They work by winding up a spring on a clutch and when the clutch/spring mechanism reaches over the square block it creates an impact.

I was wandering around YouTube and just happened to watch this:

Not the greatest vid in the world, but he has a very similar item, describes it, then does a cut-away of it and records it working in Slo-mo for you to see.

That was pretty interesting. Thanks for that.

I was actually rather impressed by that guy, in his approach and delivery and slo-mo video editing skills. It was a whole lot better vid than I thought it was going to be in the first few seconds mostly because I believe I was 'judging a book by its cover', so to speak. I feel kind of bad about that now that I think about it.

I did cringe a little when he used a chrome socket on the impact. It might have just been a Mastercraft (I think), but still. It's something I just wouldn't do.

There appears to be little info on these out there.

This one appears to be dated 1981.

That was a very good video, thanks for sharing!

I'm debating whether or not to keep the one I have -sticking it on the end of a drill would be very cumbersome in certain situations.
