I am rebuilding my turbo (GTP38) and it takes a 12pt 8mm. I don't like 12pt and only have a few...no 8mm. I am probably going to Sears cus I need it now and I have some points. Some of the bolts are on the edge of damaged from rust. Do the "universal" spline type have a better chance of grabbing or will they round faster than a standard 12pt.

Craftsman universal spline sockets don't fit anything well. Better quality ones like proto do.

If you have a 5/16", it is exactly the same as 8mm. They interchange perfectly.

Is the GTP38 turbo using 12 point fasteners? If so, a 12 point socket would be best for a 12 point fastener, not spline.

Yes they are 12 pt fasteners.

Huh I had a couple 12pt 5/16 chinesum that were in my junk sockets bag. They were popping over the splines but my gearwrench ratcheting wrench at 8mm was grabbing some (probably the socket quality).... But the 5/16 is a couple thousands smaller so maybe a tighter fit. They are metric threads.

Ok so avoid the spine drive?

Ok will do...I just saw some reviews saying they would remove damaged fasteners.

Also has anyone solved the age old questions of which is more likely to break/round reasonable (not the fuel high torque on a M12) impact wrench or ratchet?

Well after 4 stores I had to choose between a Job Smart 12 pt and a Cman "universal" both 3/8 drive. I guess I will take Tiawan over China so Cman universal wins. I just complained not long ago that all these sets were 12 pt but you can't find them in individual pieces. I still need a 1/4 drive deep to get some of them out.

i have yet to figure out all of the hate for spline sockets. the universal spline sockets, yes i would not trust them. the ones that are actually sized in sae and metric are just as good as a 12 point and more than likely better as they use an extreme form of off corner engagement.

i don't use them often but the times that i have used them they have worked as they should with no damage to the fastener.

Yeah unfortunately my weekend warrior tool budget is not that high. I do have half of the set of Irwin bolt-grips. (Why they sell them as two halves of a kit I'll never know.) Has anyone else had luck with these? They have never gotten a damaged bolt out for me. Though, the stuff I have used them on was all basically rust welded together. There just isn't anything that will break 20-40 years of rust.

Try Home Depot, Lowes, and Harbor Freight. You will find what you need at one of those locations.
