I've used this process twice, and both times was impressed with the speed of response. Once was a broken hex socket; replacement was mailed. The other was a broken handle on a fiberglass shovel. They didn't have what they felt was an equivalent model, so they sent me a check. Unless there's an urgent need for a replacement, zero reason in my mind to spend time trying your luck at a retail store.![]()

Here are the steps to take if you don’t want to go to a store.
Once upon a time, toward the end of the manufacturing move from US to China, I had a 10"? (USA) 3/8" extension that wouldn't fit sockets. Took it to Sears, and all the equivalent models were made in China. But there was a 1/2" in the same length that was USA-made. I asked if I could pay the difference and take the 1/2". Guy thought about it for a second and said just go ahead and take it, I appreciate that you're supporting USA-made stuff.I had this problem when Sears ran craftsman. Had an old lady working the tool area tell me they didn’t make it anymore. So, I was sol.
Took a couple managers to work this complex problem through. I walked out with new screwdriver but quit buying craftsmen products that day.
Contrast that to a few years later, different Sears location, I brought in a 3-drawer middle tool chest that had arrived warped. Manager refused to swap it out because I couldn't prove that the defect happened during manufacturing vs during shipment to me(?!) Went back and forth for a bit on this. Eventually I looked around the store, pointed out that there was not a single other customer present, asked his thoughts on why that was and whether he wanted to alienate their only remaining customer. I did not get the replacement.
Sears used to be oneVessel might make good screwdrivers, but I can’t think of a single retail establishment that handles them.

The deals were unbelievable. I had to look up the specifics on this - I ordered an SPG international 42" tool box, original price $1899Sear at one point had the ability to get all those logistics and technology via buying Amazon. They didn't bite and set themselves up for failure. They set up their online presence too late, then went on a fire sale to try and gain some footing. I remember the deals they had right before they went belly up.
