Splitting the difference is a hell of a lot more than a lot of people would do. He should be appreciative of that.

Komobu, you are an honorable man. Your e-mail explained your position clearly while respecting the seller's position. I wish you well in this transaction. Please keep us posted as to the outcome.

Just made contact with seller. He said instead of me paying 50 to him, Forty would cover it just fine. As I was saying from the beginning, he really is a decent guy. And for a total of 360, I got a great deal with items that total over 1000.

Well, that is good that you will both be satisfied with that deal. I hope that you still give him a hard time about his math skills when you drop off the $$$.

yeah I totally agree with Chad. Your going to drive over and give the guy more money? I would make him come and get it. Also no way I would ever want to buy anything else from the guy.

Now the ball is in his court. I will return everything, or nothing. There will be no hard feelings on my part. I will not hold a grudge in this no matter what the outcome is. If I give him everything back, and in the future he lists something on Craigslist, I will still buy from him if the price is right.

The view is always better when you take the high road. And the clear communication is a bonus.

Good job.

Too bad we can't all deal with MEN like you. Although I can understand why people would want to walk away and keep the tools, money is money after all, I think it's time we put away the greed and make decisions based on what is right and wrong. No offence meant to others, we are all entitled to our opinions.
Either way you displayed wisdom and took the high road. Way to set a great example and walk away feeling good about what you did!

A deal is a deal, when I strike hands I stand behind it. I don't like to tinker with a transaction or have the other party unhappy, so if they have a problem, I unwind the deal completely, with the caveat that shipping costs, travel etc. are up to them. I'd ask him when he would like to bring the $320 so you can be sure to have the tools with you that day.

Thats being completely fair, but also leaving the "friction" of the transaction for them to deal with

With access to a student discount I would not be buying anything used unless it was substantially less than the student price. You need to build up a relationship with the Snapon dealer so you can get warranty service on really cheap used tools.

There is a difference between a righteous man and a good man.

You did the good thing.

Sorry, the beer thing reminds me of a time I was running a small machine shop and the Chinese were over here dismantling a steel mill they had purchased so they could ship it back to China. They busted an axle on one of their cranes and we were asked to bid on building a new one. I had to go sit at a big table with a bunch of scowling ******** Chinamen and an interpreter. I didn't care if we got the job or not because back then everyone was real busy. We went back and forth and finally agreed on a price of 9,000 even, I believe it was, but before we sealed the deal, I said with a very straight face, "and a case of Budweiser" . The translater told them and they all looked around at each other saying "Budweiser ?" . They then busted up laughing and I saw a whole different side to these guys. We got the job and one day they showed up on a "field trip" and they had a case of Bud and 1 of Bud light. I don't know if there's a moral here , but it still makes me smile

It doesn't have a thing to do with greed. It's amazing how casually that word is thrown around, without a clue as to what it really means.

It's sad that's what you took away from this.

I disagree sir.

His final decision was based not on the value of the goods or the money or in fact the desire to acquire goods or money (the very definition of greed). The decision would seem to be based on the relationship and his own moral convictions (rather then keeping the $100 bucks in his pocket).
What I took away from this is that there are people less concerned with the acquisition of material goods or wealth and more concerned with what they feel is the best decision both morally and in the best interest of the relationship.
IMO

However, to each his own opinion and I may have placed my own interpretation on this situation.

Overall, great debate. In the end, a resolution that both sides were happy with.

Actually the very definition of greed is excessive desire for wealth or goods. It didn't seem to me like anything previously described was excessive on anyone's part. As they say, perception is reality, and we all see things different.
