Here's another example of lunacy:

On what planet is this considered light surface rust or amazing shape for its age? :headscrat

This is Arizona and the only way it's going to look like that is if you left it outside for a few decades, or submerged it in a lake. :dunno:

Might be worth $450 if it was restored, but as is, I think there's one too many zeroes on that price.🧐
I wouldn’t pay $25 for that box. That leaves $425 for “patina”. Yikes!

It isn't just craigslist. It's pretty much any online marketplace now. People think their older tools and toolboxes are worth their weight in gold. It's been really frustrating for people like myself that are trying to build out a work set using a combination of used and new tools. I don't want to spend a fortune on some stuff that I use intermittently but I'm finding the used stuff damn near the price of new. Oh well. I blame the plethora of programming that focuses on guys searching through junk for that high-dollar item.

To be clear, I would not pay $450 for that stack. But that is because I am also a "bottom-feeder" who has under $150 into each of my stacks (including mid-boxes). I could see a ******** collector grabbing it for that much, which is what I was trying to say. Especially if they "needed" a matching part (in this case, probably the 10D top).

I just ran across this ad on Marketplace. This imbecile wants $50 for a can of baked beans.

“Last can of grandma Brown’s home baked beans in existence no low ball offers I know what I got.”

Let me guess. He buttoned up in the shelter during the Cuban missile crisis.

Uh , dude. We have this thing called Door Dash. You just select a can of baked beans or a Big Mac, or whatever else you want from your handheld pocket supercomputing data communications hub, which we colloquially refer to as a "smart phone" and they bring it to your door. And by the way, those masks are not for radioactive fallout. The atomic war never happened. They are for this thing called COVID. It's a total **** show. If you have any common sense you will just order another pallet of baked beans and go back in the shelter for another 5 years and hope we figure this **** out.

Well, they are probably something people collect so the size may not correlate to the price.

He probably ate those after having a few chili dogs at the N. Chili American Legion Hall to try to control the burn. FYI dear readers, in western NYS, it's pronounced "Ch-eye-lie."

I suspect it was posted as a joke. "Let's see how-many pissed-off people we can stir-up!"

Well, the seller can always hope an out of state collector who doesn't know any better, Jonesing for a 58-59 vintage box, who doesn't care that it's in boat anchor condition, will jump on it and pay top dollar. I wouldn't hold my breath, but that's just my $.02 worth.

All kidding aside, that's seriously the worst condition I have ever seen in years of watching and I would bet the seller picked this up for $40 at a yard sale, if even that much.
That's my box and I'm glad I decided to keep it. It's just surface rust that dusts off like a powder. A blow gun would get it practically rust free in 5 minutes.

Now I have what I believe is a matching 2 Drawer intermediate chest to go with it so I'll keep it hopefully forever.

Anyone who thinks that box is a boat anchor truly doesn't know **** about rust.

But hey, at least I'm not sending nasty anonymous messages through Craigslist, with writing that matches up perfectly with someone in this thread.

I always assumed the people who wrote that type of **** were dumb *** teenagers. Let's not pretend you didn't know exactly who's ad that was.

I'm glad you're happy with it, but here's a serious question: If the rust dusts off so easily, why didn't you just clean it up before you listed it and got the price you were looking for?

Didn't care if I sold it or not. It would have sold as it was for full price if I left it up. I've sold several before, that I regret, in nowhere near as nice of shape.

Plus a lot of people would rather get them just as they are. Selling stuff like that can be pretty nuanced.

I know how you feel, been trying to sell a drill press that I didnt feel like restoring ( the bottom foot of the stand had heavy rust but was still superficial ) and got a nasty anonymous email asking what lake I dragged it out of and that I should be publicly flogged for treating it that way.

Makes you wonder sometimes whos actually sending those emails...

Somewhere there's a forum or a Reddit sub for "Craigslist Flawless Victory" or similar. There just has to be...

There's a guy locally who has older, vintage tools, but nothing he posts on Craigslist is all that nice. He claims he's in the business. He always asks ten times what it's worth. I don't know how he sells anything.

Quoted for posterity. You can't make this stuff up.

Take it up with the people who buy the stuff. They've all got one thing in common, they don't give a **** what you think.

Here's a Wilton Bullet vise for sale in my region:

He priced it at $260, which would be a reasonable price if it had a swivel base, and the jaw support on the static jaw tower hadn't broken off. Check out the quality of the repair. Here's the wording in the ad:

4" Vintage WILTON 101028 Schiller PK, ILL. USA Bullet Vise, Bench Machinist Vice

PRICE FIRM. No shipping.
4" jaws, working. #101028 Wilton Bullet Vise. Weighs 42lb. Measures 16" long when closed. Meet at ENOLA Unimart near CVS

**CALLS or TEXXTS ONLY. I do not check emails**

I actually have a bit of a different take on this, I've tried to sell things on Craigslist at what I believe are reasonable prices and got no hits or calls at all except for scammers. Then I posted an actual legitimate mistake where instead of $20 I put in 200 as the price. Now I noticed my error fairly quickly and when I went to my email to get the link to edit it to the correct price, I already had an email from somebody that immediately stated he didn't like my $200 price and there's no way in the world he would ever pay more $100. So I emailed him back and I first told him that he had a lot of nerve offering me half of my asking price and then told him sold come get it, LOL because I'm not an idiot..

0 I actually have a lot worse problem with the scammers that don't actually even have something for sale they just steal a picture and post it up with a bogus price just to harvest your email addresses or phone numbers. I do my best to always try to report those jerks

Here's the most expensive asking price on tools I've ever seen. I know some aviation tools can be niche and expensive but there's a lot of store brands in these drawers. Link below and selected pictures attached.

Well, that's a nice tool set, but not $200K nice by any stretch of the imagination. All SAE, too, which might be useful to aircraft techs, but not to anyone else, really.

One can dream, though, I guess.

I'm sure if you email the guy saying it's too much, he'll surely tell you that he knows what he has and doesn't care if it sells or not.

Someone totally missing the point that the calibration is almost all the cost of the calibrated weights, and that any corrosion or damage trashes the value.

Class "F" needs to be within a few milligrams for these sizes, and I doubt these were even that class when new.

Of course I let them know months ago but it's still up at the same prices.

I wouldn’t even pay that much for a USA version of that vise. I do want a USA version of that vise, though.

Everyone I know that has one of those “Chinese wonder vises” absolutely loves it. If you mount it right at the corner of your bench… where when you lean it sideways… it is beyond the edge of the bench… they are really awesome. It is a brilliant form factor if you mount it like that.

I have a friend with an import like that. I hate it! We were trying to break some bolts lose on a part that was clamped in the vise and no matter we did something would slip. The swivel base wasn't serrated and the clamp for the jaws to swivel in the base would hold with any force either. Talk about trying to screw with a limp ****! I told him to put it on Facebook for a $100 and buy a "normal" vise!
