one man's trash.....

doesn't surprise me at all.
I have an old zinc-topped dry sink in my kitchen that supposedly is worth about that much. I think my mother paid about $20 bucks for it in the early 1960's.

go figure!

He isn't trying to sell it to a woodworker, he's fishing for the hipster city crowd that will repurpose it as a kitchen island or an ascent piece. He has a high price on it so that he can "make a deal" at a lower price to make the buyer think they got one over on him.
Meanwhile he still pockets a tidy sum.

It will sit there for a while, but eventually he'll find a rube.

jakemac is 100% correct. Hipsters and their shabby chic/industrial/steampunk BS have ruined prices on a lot of cool old vintage stuff that would otherwise get used to accomplish something rather than serve as a surface to display things on in an over-designed studio apartment.

Don't even get me started!!!

The local yayhoos in my area that weld a bunch of junk together and ask $300 for it on CL - "steampunk lamp" LOL! The last one that I saw had a base made out of a late-model wheel hub or rear end gear with an ABS tone wheel on it (meaning that anybody who knew car parts would immediately recognize this as NOT being a vintage part).

I've seen vintage chrome-plated brass Binks air filter/regulator units (like the one I rescued from a junkyard 25 years ago and am still using) ruined in a similar manner.

It's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. If you charge a lot for something, the dumb asses will pay $$$$ for it -- thinking it's inherently better.

And if their motorcycle handlebars are loose, they won't let you repair it with a shim made from an aluminum can. The aluminum shim must come from BMW and cost $125.

What the hell did they use to take pics of that thing? Asking big bucks for something and they can't go on ebay and lay down $30 for a decent PNS camera.

Heh, it's good work if you can pull it off. Don't know that I'd quit my day job for it, but welding junk together and selling it for $$$ isn't a bad gig, and as long as the new owner of the welded junk is happy then the junk is fulfilling done purpose.

I guess I don't understand. Why does this upset you, or why do you even care at all?

It's somebody selling something, on CL, for whatever they feel like asking.

Someone who wants it, will think they did great, by haggling it down to $3800.

Is he just supposed to sell it for $75, so somebody grabs it up in 15 minutes?

Someone sold one similar on eBay, asking $2500 taking something less on best offer. It's pretty hard to negotiate the price up.

The value in that table is actually it's usability. I've been shopping for a woodworkers bench to use with hand tools. Grizzly sells a unit that is bigger than that brand new for $1000. Even the top of the line Lie Nielson table brand new is only $2500. He's off his rocker.

Yet it's ok to buy a 1940s Snap On ratchet for a few hundred dollars....

I'd rather see a "hipster" repurpose a beautiful work bench that someone built with their bare hands and actually use it instead of being tucked away in someone's garage cluttered with **** never to see the light of day again. Or even worse, cut up and burned or thrown away.

^ or maybe $283.00 for a 1/4" drive Plomb socket set?

salvage dogs and the like are big problems inflating prices

PBS' "Antique Roadshow" kind of got the ball rolling, but a lot of the really high-end stuff was either one-off or one-of-a-kind type of deals.

I think what really got prices jacked up out of all proportion was a combination of "American Pickers", "Pawn Stars', and the "Barrett-Jackson auctions."

I collect old railroad signals and I occasionally see the same. There's someone local to me asking $8000 for a single lamp signal that is probably worth about $300, and that's only because of the relay cabinet that is attached to it. The lamp and mast alone would probably only fetch $75-100 at best.

Again, like everyone has said, they're looking for a sucker designer to come along with a big budget who is trying to decorate a home or business. They're not looking to sell to someone who is going to use it or knows what it is really worth.

I mostly just get a good chuckle at the stuff and prices around my area. Prices are always near the new price. And it just sits and sits. I rarely get anything from cl due to the rediculous pricing. But hey, more power to them !

The other side of that coin is people who refuse to believe that something they used to buy cheap has now went up in value. Cast iron wheel weights for John Deere garden tractors are a good example. 12 years ago these used to fetch $75-100 per pair. People thought that was a crazy high price. I just looked on eBay and now they're bringing $225-250 a pair. We get a guy on our local craigslist a couple times a year begging for someone to sell him a set cheap since they are not worth the crazy price they get for them on eBay. I guess he expects someone to sell him some for $40 or so because that's what he thinks they're worth. I'll bet he's still looking.

Ever since those shows, people with anything "old" expect a premium.

Another one that gets people dreaming of getting rich is Lionel Trains.. Some of the stuff is highly sought by collectors (& Us Accumulators); but much of it is the remains of what was bought for kids to enjoy and have train wrecks with..

I have a variety, and Folks are aware that I am rather protective of those trains and equipment... I enjoy watching some of the reactions those Folks have had when they witnessed a train wreck that they didn't know was staged.. I bought junkers specifically for this purpose.. And Few people know the difference between the collectibles and the junkers.

They seem to be everywhere, and I wish they would just go away. Here's the latest near me:

https://buffalo.craigslist.org/atq/5912657192.html

In case the ad disappears, he's asking $5,900 for the antique work bench in the photos below.

Maui

When ya post craigslist ads here ya should include the entire post.

"A very cool piece. English. Unique
Has 2 wooden vises( no metal at all)
With vises out it is 8 feet long 30" deep ( not including the front vise) and 35" high. Willing to negotiate, a reasonable offer!!!

Don't miss this chance to own a piece of history

Could be used in a winery. A bar or island in a cool house, furniture Use your imagination"

The wording says it all, down to the type of buyer, and the higher than expected price just to reel in a sucker.

I bet if ya offer $1000 he will counter with slightly higher price like $1300.

Lol use your imagination, I imagine if I wanted it, I would test out the vises out. I would place his fingers in the vise and get a lower price.

I always thought that something was worth, what someone was willing to pay for it.

No?

Hell no, because some fooking ***** paid an outrageous price for something that normally sells for a lot lower price does not mean from now on that is the selling price from now on.

It is a BS fad that will end up with the stuff that was over paid for ending up in the dump when a new fade kicks in.

See it with used barn tin here, two months ago it was $3-5 a linear ft now it's $5 a sq ft WTF one seller ups their price they all do.

I do agree it's the TV shows that have been fueling this fad.
