I guess I don't understand. Why does this upset you, or why do you even care at all?

It's somebody selling something, on CL, for whatever they feel like asking.

Someone who wants it, will think they did great, by haggling it down to $3800.

Is he just supposed to sell it for $75, so somebody grabs it up in 15 minutes?

Someone sold one similar on eBay, asking $2500 taking something less on best offer. It's pretty hard to negotiate the price up.
I hate it when it drives the cost up of certain items in general....not mad at the seller but the people paying the absurd amount for it

This stuff is just aggravating to serious buyers. I recently bought a very nice Krl 1022 for 1900, which is fair. It was on sale for two weeks. But there are people in my area who have had their KRA box on sale for 3500 for the past 3 years and won’t budge under 3000. It’s just weird. But I respect the fact That we live in a free country and you can offer your property for whatever you want.

We have two Harbor Freight stores in town, but CrackList is full of idjits trying to sell Harbor Freight tools for full retail or more.

I genuinely don't understand what their game is, but I have a couple of theories.

The best I can figure is that they're deliberately looking for stupid people they can scam in some other way; the tools don't exist, but if you're dumb enough to respond, you might be the sort of pigeon they can pluck. The same goes for ads full of spelling and grammar errors; they serve as a way of filtering out non-idiots.

I have a second theory that these ads are placed by CrackList Central Command as a way to attract and identify bots and scammers; anyone who replies to one of these ads obviously isn't a rational human, so most of the replies they're going to get are scam attempts. There will be some portion of actual human idiots, of course.

I have seen a few ads where it appears some dipstick with dreams of becoming a wholesaler got scammed into buying a pallet of discontinued Harbor Freight **** (stuff even HF stopped selling), and is desperately trying to flog a couple hundred $10 grinders for $50 each.

I love those $10 grinders and I have several, but I buy them from the store, not some random yahoo's garage at 5X the price...

I have no idea why the idiots do what they do but when they're overcharging for stuff like that I simply flag their ad. Craigslist is supposed to be policed by the users. I'm a user and that's how I choose to police the site. I also flag any pawn shop or business (whose business is selling products) ads. It takes a few (Craigslist won't say how many) of these flags from CL users before an ad is actually removed. The pawn shops around here are getting trickier about posting their ads and hiding the fact they're a pawn shop.

Good luck!

You're paying the big bucks for the Craftsman tool box and one or two Craftsman tools in there.

There always seems to be one of these on every FB or CL. Same stuff I've thrown up for $20 and still takes me a week to get it sold.

Not CL or FBM, but the Habitat Re-Store. Not sure what they are thinking on this one.

It should sell for about $500.

I sold my Atlas 618 lathe for $1200 approximately twelve years ago, with all of the same accessories, plus a milling attachment. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I had it listed for ONE day and sold it to the first person who called. At the time that was a very reasonable asking price.

I find it difficult to believe that this lathe would be worth so much less, as it appears newer. Why is that? Just curious....

Around here (upstate NY) it should only bring about $500 - $600 tops. On the west coast it may be a different story though.

Wow, $500 for a 4" vise that was "restored" in the hastiest, sloppiest manner possible with a blue rattle can? I don't know I've ever seen a 4" vise I would pay $500 for, but I can say with certainty that this sure as hell ain't it. :wtf:

To say he's dreaming at his current price is an understatement:

The above was from September of 2019, and even now in June of 2020, he still hasn't sold it.

In fact, he's even raised the price to a whopping $600 and now includes in the description a tacit admission that he doesn't actually want to sell it! :wtf:

These people never cease to amaze me with their abject stupidity. :tard:

I thought this one was a little crazy. I sold a freestanding one in beautiful shape for $225.

https://denver.craigslist.org/tls/d/wheat-ridge-rebuilt-rockwell-delta-14/7135117874.html

Rockwell Delta 1950’s DP225 14” benchtop drill press. #2 Jacobs chuck.

I put a lot of time into this press. List of restoration work:
- full tear down and cleaning
- return spring recalibration
- new motor bearings and capacitor
- new quill spindle bearing (try to find one!!)
- motor rewired for 240v, convertible to 120v
- new power cord
- new internal wiring and custom switch

This thing is built like a tank and has been rebuilt to last another 80 years.

Hard to find these tools now, especially in ready to use condition.

Asking $700.

Seriously, abject stupidity? Seems to me the guy is simply being straightforward, and obviously doesn't care whether it sells or not. A new Wilton 4" bullet vise sells for over $700, not sure what you think a "fair" price would be for this one.

Certainly ridiculous for that small a drill press with such a half-assed "restoration".

You seem to get awfully worked up over these Craigslist ads, what exactly is half-assed about it...and what would you have done differently?

Maybe its just me, but you may be taking these ads way too seriously....

To answer your question, I consider it an example of abject stupidity to list something for $500 and, after nearly a year of it not selling it, decide to raise the price to $600. If you feel otherwise, that's fine with me.

I'm not worked up, but I did find it amusing and thought others would too, especially since it was a follow-up to last year's post about the same guy, which seemed well received.

I'm really not interested in derailing the thread to debate the merits of the pricing on the vise or talk about what I'd do different with the drill press. :dunno:
