Got this Powermatic today, for 250. Really good shape for a 1960s machine. Time for a rebuild.

What is wrong with it? Those are pretty durable machines.

jack vines

Actually, nothing wrong that I can tell except for decals have come off. Other than that, I like shiny new looking vintage machinery.

Haha... Might be hard to drive over the truck.

I just hate working on them at work.

All in good fun. I hate the Hyundai too. I have to find another project for a daily driver. I just don't have the garage room right now.

Im amazed at how well built and simple these machines are. I have not found any issues yet. It appears it was well taken care of.

I also bought some evaporust and started soaking some stuff. It is like magic. Just wipe or brush afterwards and like new. The following items were black with rust, and after a couple hours and a light scrub already looking better.

One small issue I did find is that the one of the three handles is slightly bent, but I should be able to straighten it out.

IMG_0403.jpg

Also, I need to find tool to remove the chuck from the spindle. Anyone improvised one, or will I just end up damaging the machine?

Another issue I could use help on is separating the quill from the spline shaft. There is a set screw I loosened near the top of the quill. I tried gently forcing the shaft out to no avail. I see no other set screws. I presume this is someing I just need to press out, or beat with a soft mallet?

Also got the cover blasted in the HF cabinet, and started on the body filler.

Got a little more done. Got the head completely apart and sand blasted, wire wheeled and polished the mating surfaces.

Also took the production table off of the column today. Very heavy. I couldn't resist a little PB Blaster and scotch brite. Also tried WD-40 and Evaporust. Here it is with about 5 minutes of scrubbing.

I found the Sherman Williams mix for the old powermatic pea green on the OWWN. Ive got an HVLP, so Im going to hit it with a two part epoxy primer sealer (I have a gallon or so laying around from another project) and then the factory color. I also found old powermatic decals in image format. I just need to get the decal paper and sealer.

Or something like it to go into the slot in the arbor and drive out the chuck arbor.

no neat sig line

Thanks. I ordered one and it should be here any day now. Im just waiting for it so I cant take the other quill bearing off, and be done with the quill reassembly.

You need one of these.

It goes in the slot above the chuck, flat down, rounded side up. You may have to move things to open up the slot. It should be open with the top of the chuck arbor sticking up into it somewhat. Arbor is probably a MT3/JT4 if that is a 3/4 chuck.

Been working on and off on this. Decided to take apart the motor. Ordered some new bearings for it.

Also got everything stripped to bare metal and primed with a 2 stage DTM epoxy primer.

You can see I missed a few spots. I was starting to get dark and my HVLP was starting to sputter a little. Will cover it up with the vista green enamel.

Got some paint from Sherwin.

IMG_0537.jpg

Here is the formula for those with older powermatic vista green machinery

IMG_0538.jpg

Took out my cheap HF clone HVLP with a 1.8 tip and thinned the paint by eye with laquer thinner. Probably about 20%. Shot well through the gun.

Here is the results. Only did a little painting as I had other things to do, and the ind. enamel takes quite a bit longer to dry than the 2 stage epoxy primer.

IMG_0531.jpg

IMG_0532.jpg

Also put some new bearings on the motor while waiting for paint to dry.

I got sidetracked from the project when I found this Smith and Mills Shaper for cheap.

However, I got focused again, and here she is starting to come back together.
