Wonder how many people actually buy those boxes off Craigslist. Or even $5k ones. I tried to sell mine zero bites lol.

If I brought that box and sold it for that price. I’d be making a profit

Everyone must think their older pro box is better than the new ones or some kind of rare limited edition that warrants getting back what they paid for it. Maybe if they sold them on an installment plan like Snap On?

I'm not so sure this really qualifies as "crazy". I mean I can never understand how/why anyone would pay that kind of money or a lot less for these boxes. Do these companies (Snap-On, MacTools, etc) sell these to legitimate mechanics at a big discount? Just can't figure out how/why these guys would spend thousands on a toolbox.

I do like the idea of a thread with really crazy CL ads though. Not sure this is it.

The whole value premise of S-O is that it is an Investment. In your career, yes, in something with returns... every mechanic heavily invested in S-O has a wild fantasy that they will cash out their big box and tools for $50K or so when they move on to another job.

The first listing they do on CL is part of their meeting with reality.

Wait........ you mean my snap on box won't pay for my retirement? I am so glad I invested in all those USA made Craftsman tools, that should offset everything.

I can buy that setup for about 15k. Maybe slightly less. Off the truck.

Most people can’t. No one pays Msrp but it’s completely up to your dealer what you pay imo

I paid $5500 otd for a 68 epiq with power top. Got a free bk5600, hoodies, and some other stuff along with it. I think retail on box was $13k?

Just as I suspected. Too bad for these folks. Live and learn.

I am always curious to know what these big name expensive boxes do end up selling for. You don't generally see the ads stay on CL very long. I've always assumed it was because they end up selling them but it could be that the owners are unable to sell at anything close to their asking prices and don't renew the ads. Hmmm...

A former friend, who married my ex-wife, poor *******, used to brag that he spent more on his S-O box than his house.
Maybe that's why his 1st wife left him....

My brother was a Pro mechanic, had 2 Snap On boxes and pretty much exclusively their tools. What made it so easy to buy at these prices was the installment plan, you get it today and pay a little every week - doesn't hurt so much until all the purchase payments pile up and you're broke for months.

Craigslist and Facebook classifieds in my area are littered with ads selling Snap-On, MAC and Matco tool boxes. $2,500, $3,500, $5,000, $10,000.... then there’s always the guy asking thousands for a Snap-On box that’s full of tools, and the tools in the pictures are clearly not tool truck brand, are old and dirty and look like a box of **** tools that the hillbilly at the local flea market can’t even sell.

Sure, those boxes are nice and I’d love to have one. But why would I pay you $3,500 for your used Snap-On box (that you probably paid the same amount for 10 years ago, new) when I can go down to Sears or Home Depot and buy an almost similar size box that will hold my tools just fine, for 1/4 the price.

Some of the drawers in my late 2000’s purchased Craftsman boxes are probably over their weight capacity and have yet to fail or give me any trouble.

Agreed, the only reason to buy a pro box is if you ARE a pro and make a living with your tools. For a weekend warrior like myself, a Craftsman Ball Bearing box and a lot of money left over for tools (and guns, and cameras, and dinner out with the wife) is the way to go.

For a home owner that’s fine.

You’ll have a wall of boxes to fill up with what I have just in my 68

I am by know means suggesting anyone needs to "have" a snapon or other pro box nor do I wish to start yet another debate on the pros and cons of expensive boxes.

This is merely meant to have a laugh over extremely over priced boxes, pro grade or not.

So where do these sellers think the $50k is going to come from. If you're just starting you don't have the money. If you have the money odds are you've been working and no longer need the full set. Hmmmm

maybe it's just me,
but i'm not seeing $50K let alone the $100K he claims to have "invested"

:dunno:

maybe he's got a few keys of coke stashed behind a drawer....

I wouldn’t give 1/25th his asking price for that hideous, dated setup.

On a wild guess; I believe He is the type of person who knows that everyone is going to believe everything He states.

On a second wild guess: He believes anything He owns does not decline in value or suffers from years of normal use.

For posterity's sake...

"For sale is a huge snap-on tool box full of tools. Also included is a roll-cart full of tool's, a snap-on puller set and a snap-on welder. The Price may seem high but i have invested over $100K in this box. I'am retired and no longer need it. Anyone who is or wants to get into the Auto repair business will appreciate the magnitude of this sale. I 'am posting a few pictures to give an idea of whats here. I will NOT split up any part of this set. I will consider trades of equal value (land, trucks, boats). Please don't low-ball me i want what i'am asking. You will need a tow truck to move this box, as it is that big. I payed $20k just for the box and locker. Please call" [phone number].

As my grandfather used to say, "want in one hand, and ****** in the other and see which fills up first!"

Steve

All that box and hardly enough tools to fill one drawer.

Why would any one take the time to list out every socket like that also? To make it seem like there was more there than there really is I assume.

Does seem like a lot of copying and pasting. You’d think SO would offer their tools in sets so you wouldn’t have to specify every single tool. Oh, wait....

Hahahaha this ^ is hilarious and so true... guys selling used snap on on eBay and craigslist and even on GJ need to wake up to the fact that they aren't offering us a ridiculous financing plan to warrant 80% of retail pricing....

It's insanity.

Just because you got duped and the whole truck tool (and honestly USA made tool world) has gone crazy since the demise of craftsman doesn't mean it makes sense to those of us who aren't addicted to the SO koolaid

i think your 2nd wild guess is spot on...

so many people have the word "investment" on the mind....
$100K in tools are an investment, but not in the way to make your money back.
my "working" tools were an investment in my future, i bought "the good stuff" almost from the beginning mainly so i wouldnt make the mistake of buying a piece of **** tool, having it fail (repeatedly) and to deal with it for my entire "career" or ultimately put out more hard earned cash for something better.
if i put everything together, "working tools", "garage tools" and the rest of my "stuff", i'd be in the $100k range to replace it all.
in the real world i'd be lucky to get $20K...

i know several people that think everything they have is gold plated, stuff thats been sitting neglected & unused for over 15 years, and is just rusting away.... :dunno:

There are probably a dozen or more racing teams in Mooresville, NC. A SO box like that would not be unusual in that town.

Locals around here seem to think CL is the lottery or something. You see crazy prices on things, and the ads run forever. The only thing I can figure is that they are telling the wife, "I'm trying to sell it, but no luck!"

I really don't believe that people actually look to see what comparable items are in or on the same marketplace. Knowing the real resale value is key to actually selling something....which seems completely lost on toolbox sellers online. There is a retail shop in DE that delivers, and has a very good reputation, selling absurdly large snap on boxes for fair prices. They will send you a detailed video of whatever box you're interested in. Ignorance would be the only reason for pricing your box for way more than a business like that.
