Crazy *** X, Y Dbl Rotation Table

This warranted its own thread. Anyone have any ideas? Haven't taken it apart but I can see no mark. The man had a collection of jewelers lathes. Also a Niagara sheet metal equipment horde. More pics to come.

Looks shop built to my eye. Could do well for somethings but would likely suffer from excess vibration due to high COG in heavy milling cuts. Could be just fine for other things. Looks nice, I'd be proud if I made it.

I didn't and that's what I thought too. I asked the guy I bought it from if his late Father could've made it. It's dovetails are tight with almost zero backlash. It's got an acme thread and it looks surface ground. He didn't believe his Father had made it. 100 thousandths turns.

If there isn't a major component casting then I'd wager it's shop made. Almost all commercial tooling like that has had a major component casting (later machined) since at least the early 1900's. Many used castings even before that. It may have been a personal project of a shop owner/foreman and he neglected to put his name on it. Maybe the maker couldn't afford a well made cross table and had time/material to make his own. Most commercial products carry a company identification, especially on modern pieces like that one. Most toolmakers put their name on what they make for ID purposes, I feel it's also part of the history. That's why I put my name on almost all the tooling I've made. You have a unique piece there Ghost, I'd be looking for an excuse to take it for a test drive when it's all put in order. I think it's cool.

Thanks. I also thought about no casting. Then I thought about the jewelers lathes this guy had and I don't recall there being anything cast on them either. I wonder if it's part of that world? That's where I'ma start anyway. I love it though, soon as I saw it I wanted it. I can't imagine the hours it took. The layout, set up and amount of operations, man. After I get it apart, I'll post pics and if I find anything.

Well I take that back. I guess they are just polished to high heaven.
