Crescent 9" pro series compound action lineman cutting pliers - $9 EDIT: now $6

these are one of my favorite pair of lineman pliers, along with matching cutters. they give you the best combination of every available feature... cushion grips / locking, spring loaded handles / compound cutting action / dual tooth designed jaw / lightweight design / handle detent stops handles at comfortable distance for one handed use AND handles can be manually opened to 180 degrees for 2 handed use.. this give you BOTH compound cutting action and wide jaw openings. (despite what reviews say - those people dont realize you can pull the handles past the detent to open the jaws wider) these are nothing like the similar styled Dewalt verison, i have those too and they are horrible. they barely open, and the cutting edges are much softer. both tips of my diagonal cutters broke, and the cutting edge of the pliers are chipped after minimal use.

this is a great pair of pliers for people that work with gloves.. there is no need to position you fingers and hands like you would with regular lineman pliers. the spring loaded handles allow you to keep all your fingers on the outsides of the handles, and let you apply full force when cutting without having to constantly re-position your hands. i keep these pliers and cutters in my tool try even when using my Knipex stuff. i may even wind up going back to these after im done experimenting with all the other sets ive recently bought.

I bought the diagonal cutters 5 or 6 years ago when they first came out. I didn't like them at all. First they felt too sloppy at the hinges, and if you were cutting something difficult (most everything was, even Romex) it felt like the handles were almost touching each other. I could barely get them to cut braided fishing line when other cutters went right through with no issue. I also hated the lock always locking during use. I think I threw them or gave them away shortly after.

Hopefully they've improved on them.

Ditto. I tried the compound action Crescent and also had no love for them at all. Would not cut 14-3 even! BUT, they now have newer versions, and the above testimonies suggest these are much better now. I may have to try them again (but only in the store). They would have to be awesome to pull me away from Klein or Knipex or Channellock for cutters or linesmans. - Paul

Sorry we expressed our experiences with these tools. I guess tool discussion isn't what this website is all about? Obviously they had atleast one bad batch as there are two people with the same experience. They definitely didn't make my life easier.

Out...

Why can't someone have an opinion on something and it just be ok? No one has to be right or wrong on these pliers. I think most of us, myself included just want honest feedback from those who have used them.

listen guy - chalk it up to a bad experience on your part.. if you dont like what i have to say about them, then dont continue to post anything on this thread.. you were telling people reading this thread, they dont work, after i had good things to say about them. . QUOTE]

Oh MY GOODNESS, you have serious issues !!! Please go see a therapist!

These threads are about tool discussion. Not NAZI like destruction of other's thoughts and ideas. Free speech applies on these internet message boards. I'm sorry that the whole entire world doesn't share your view of something, whatever it is. I'll post on whatever thread I damn well please, including yours! If you don't want to read it, then don't! But I think people deserve to know of everyone's experiences with tools, not just your opinion. And my opinion of these particular ones from Crescent was not good at all. 'Enuff said about it. - Paul

I see $6.29 at HD with free ship-to-store. Title says "Long Nose", but model # and photo is for the Lineman pliers.

Wait a minute...I think I got these a long time ago for even less when Sears had given me some random free reward points. They're probably in one of my boxes full of too-good-a-deal-to-pass-up tools that I've never used.

You two have a difference of opinion, and that is what makes this site so valuable. A professional electrical tradesman offered his opinion on a tool he uses everyday. That is very valuable input for those of us who don't, but would like the input of those who do. Paul had a different experience with the same tool, and expressed that clearly, also very valuable. The guy who uses them everyday responds by saying that not being able to cut with them has not been his experience, and so in his opinion, your statement was not true to his experience. No one called you a liar or said anything to merit a personal attack, and up until that point, I was truthfully enjoying reading the point, counter point discussion about something you both obviously care deeply about, and that is tools.

We all work way to hard in the mean old regular world out there, cant we be civil to each other when were hanging in here with our fellow toolaholics, even if we have different opinions? It would really **** if either of you two stopped with your valuable input on here, as I have enjoyed things from both of you just in my short time here.

What do you say, KC, can we call it a truce between two great members who happen to differ on something as simple as a 9" pair of pliers?

they do make 3 of these - the lineman, the cutter, and the long nose pliers.. crescent even makes the cutters with a red/black handle, but ive only seen and been able to find that with the cutters under the crescent label.. there MIGHT be some being sold online under the "apex tools" brand, which are probably the same thing..

if anyone happens to buy these - the last set i just got, i really had to pull the handles apart on the lineman pliers to get them to open fully.. once you do it the first time, its much easier after that.. there is also another detent to keep the handles open in the full position.. when using the cutters, if i have to cut someting thats wide, or just try to rip something apart like the old metal straps the hold phone lines up ( they are usually 3 layers think of thin metal) i usually grap one handle in each hand and use them like bolt cutters to just twist and rip whatever i can apart.. i am completely unforgiving with these at work.. i think the pair in that last video were accidently burried for a week or two also in one of the dirt trailers i use..

its funny, i easily spent a few hundered dollars on different makes and models of lineman pliers and cutters to try out, just to see for myself if there was any real difference that warranted going with one brand over another, (and my compnay supplies tools, Jonards in this case, so its not even like i NEEDED to do this) and im probably gonna wind up going back to these when im done, which are the cheapest out of all of them.. the spring loaded handles just make my life easier and keep my hands from cramping..

I have a set I bought off amazon, as well as a spring handled needle noise crescent set, and they have been good pliers. Used the linesman today, and looked for some indication of a LDC (Lot Date Code), but no luck..I do remember the package saying they are made in Taiwan.

For the recorded, mine have cut 12-3GA before...

Also, I have come across Cresent needle noise pliers before, same model & handles, but was for sure made of different metal.

I'd suggest ordering some from HD or Amazon....if u don't like them, just send or take them back....

I see both sides of this but I have to side with the OP. Here is why, this is the hot deals section not the tool discussion section. All this was supposed to be about was the deal not the function or your experience 5 years ago. He even said in the first post that these were not the best but they were good for the money. But then both bickering back and forth just made it worse. So both were in the wrong

these are one of my favorite pair of lineman pliers, along with matching cutters.

Received my pair a little while ago and did a few dozen test cuts on everything from romex to t-post clips. Not Kleins, but still a damn good deal for the money.

Thanks for the heads up.

I'll drop these into the door pocket of my pickup as a spare pair.

Cleaned up... If you value your account here, you will use the hot deals forum as intended... There is no room here for folks that can't talk about tools without calling others names.
