crossed threads

Motorcycle triple trees are held together with a large tapered threaded rod with M20x1.5 threads. The top triple tree is chromed with the same female threads.
I didn't think I needed to chase the chromed threads and now the male piece appears cross-threaded, despite minimal effort on my part ( I didn't keep turning despite the resistance).

I've cleaned up the female side with a tap. The die comes today and I'll chase the male threads. If that doesn't work, do you guys have any other suggestions?
A new set is $900 so obviously that's the least favorable option.

Thank you

Dave

If you can see the issue on the external thread you can usually fix it with a triangular needle file.

Did the parts fit together previously? Not sure if these are new-to-each-other parts or ones that disassembled just fine in the past.

+1 I use my jewlers' files for this all the time. These files are really inexpensive and extremely effective.

You can also get what’s called a thread file. They come in standard and metric thread pitches. A problem you may run into is that the chrome plating may make the threads kind of hard. Take your time and be careful.

If the end of the male threads are buggered up, use a Murray split die thread chaser.

Normal dies are difficult to start properly if the end of the threads is damaged, and you can do more harm than good. The Murray tool works by starting behind the damage, where the threads are still good.

Thank you for all the help. Chased both the male and female threads last night. A lot of cutting on the male side. The chrome was fairly thick so alot of that came off from the tap too.
All back together for mock up. will tear down again and thread lock it all, hopefully without boogering them up again.

Thanks to all of you again.
