Curtain, divider, track options

Hello,

I am planning a 32 x 28 x 9 build for later this summer. In the garage I plan to do some woodworking and subsequently HVLP paint spraying and finishing (as well as storage).

I want to set up a section in the middle of my garage that I can section off to control overspray, dust, etc. For the curtain portion of this, I plan to use a heavy recycled billboard tarp: http://www.billboardtarps.com/collections/tarps.

What I'd like input on is any suggestions/recommendations for a track/bracket set up from which I can retract/open the curtain.

When not in use, I plan to push the curtain "bundled" up against one of the walls.

Anyone have any suggestions? Is this is a Unistrut application?

Wonder if curtain track for hospital privacy curtains would work? Long straight lengths and curved sections are made. Being made for medical use though means it would not be cheap.

That's the idea I'm looking for, but I figured something for industrial or farm use might be cheaper and easier to get....

They make rollers that go in unistrut that would work for your application but they are not cheap

Much handier than sliding them to an end. Long curtains are going to use a lot of floorspace even when pushed down.

I ordered track curtain and rollers off ebay, just like they use in hospitals. Been researching curtains, I think I am going to get some Sports themed Full Size sheets as dividers, clip to the track rollers and add weights to the bottom. Cheaper than curtains

I got some material from a local canvas company last fall. They custom made the size, and they also sold me the rollers to pull it up (rather than to the side). I got the cord from FarmTek and a couple of hand crank wenches locally. The problem is that installing it I will be working about 15 feet up. I have been waiting on some help and some time to rent a lift to get it installed. The distance is about 40 feet wide by 15 feet high, and the material is in two pieces. I like the idea of it pulling up since it will be out of the way most of the year. The canvas company said they make them all the time and showed me a set up in their shop.

Then buy some canvas paint tarps and put a few grommets on one side. Then buy cheap shower curtain plastic hooks to use to hang canvas from conduit. Can push open and close, and also take down easily if needed.

Pondered clear heavy mil plastic also instead of canvas.

You won't be able to slide the shower hooks very far with conduit hung by screw-eyes.

I only need each side to be about 10'. Figured the conduit would be supportive enough and only need to slide one whole side. May have to tweak it some. Wish I had the money to have a spray booth haha.

Just an idea, garage door track and wheels. If you put the flat side down the weight of the curtain might hold the wheels in place from popping out of the track.

I used canvas from Harbor Freight. It doesnt hang evenly, may be the way the canvas was cut. It is heavy as well.

My wife buy these from Ikea and hang curtains with them. These come in 10 pack for $5.

You might consider pocket door hardware above. You can buy the track and rollers then afix the canvas to hang from them. I have this in my house and can attest the hardware is top quality.

If you are going the shower ring route, you might consider these - they will roll rather than slide and will make moving a big curtain a lot easier.

I like those roller slides.

The trouble with a sliding curtain is that you would normally like to take a long span and slide the whole thing out of the way, in 1 or 2 gatherings. Rings sliding on a rod limits the maximum span because of rod deflection.

Today I stopped in at my son's work (he is the assist. mgr. of a body shop) to check the progress on my Ranger that was backed into last week. The have some bays with curtains like the OP wants. They are commercial units that use Uni-struts for rails (installed open side down) with sliding hooks for hanging the curtain. Seems to work pretty well.

Too flimsey for BB material. I would use unistrut. They also sell a little carrage that rolls in it. Maybe some barn door hardware from tractor supply???

I'm using the hospital track you describe with heavy canvas drop cloths, works great, although the canvas cloths don't hang as neat as a curtain would.

I use a pair of 1-1/4 od sealed bearings with 3/8 bore. Get a 3/8 x 1-1/4 roll pin to serve as axel and make whatever configuration I need to hang curtain or door. This works inside 1-5/8 unitsrut for track and you have a great roller for about 6 bucks. I have 7'x 12' doors that have been rolling on these for 20 years
