I've been looking for a unique paper towel holder everywhere and so far I haven't found anything that was garage related. Anyone have a custom holder or seen one that wasn't dull? Something like a piston as the base mount or......?

Perhaps something industrial strength, like this? This is a toilet paper holder, but you can adapt the idea.

Here's some ideas: use all or part of an old paint roller
ququzuhy.jpg

If you can bend sheet metal this one wouldn't be tough.
yseduqyp.jpg

If you wanna buy one, a few mfgs sell one similar to this (I think maybe the harbor freight one looks similar)
yzy5u2u3.jpg

Think this only takes a chain? You could add a piece of PVC tube to this idea so the roll works better.
ve9yqe8u.jpg

I like this idea. There are many different shop variations I can think of. Large screw driver/pry bar?

An expansion on the above idea for how to make the "spindle" removable.

Just took a normal plastic kitchen paper towel holder and painted it red to match the tool boxes:

I was looking for some ideas for this as well. I think the piston holder would be cool. Piston as the base, weld wrist pin in place, and hack off the journal so the roll can slide on the rod.

Apologies for the crummy pic, but this is the towel dispenser I made for my garage.

I took one of the Tork dispensers- the kind that use the large blue continuous towel rolls- and removed the top part. I mounted the dispenser portion in the cabinet bottom, so all I have to do is pull down on a towel to get one or more as needed. Works great, takes no visible space, looks clean, and puts the dispenser where I wanted it (over the sink) without taking up volume to manipulate parts or hands.

Garage081.jpg

Because the dispenser is surrounded by backsplashes, any dripping, splashing, etc is easily cleaned up, or at least more easily than if it had been on regular drywall.

I use a burned exhaust valve from a B+W MAN diesel. Notice the stellite seat ! Easy project....just stand the valve up and put the towels on it .

how about mounting a small camshaft to a block of wood?
the pip piece looks cool too. or Fab one up yourself.

I love this idea, Ive had a c-shaft from my K24 hanging on my wall for months as something interesting to look at. Finally I have the right idea now to make it functional.

Couple of connecting rods hanging vertical from a cabinet, with a dowel thru the wrist pin holes?

All kinds of things can be made. I've never bothered, I keep several rolls sitting on the work benches and they end up where ever they may.

I took an old broom stick & cut it down so it's slightly longer than the paper towel roll. Then I screwed two hooks into the bottom side of the upper cabinet over my work bench & hooked short pieces of leftover chain to each hook. The cut broom stick has hooks that I screwed into the ends & it hangs & rolls fine. I'll see if I can snap a pic when I get home at lunch time.

Got tired of knocking the roll off the bench & watching it unravel across the floor so I put it up in pinch one day while I was cleaning up in the garage. It was supposed to be temporary until I could get a real one, but that was 10 years ago.

Don't have the pic handy, but I used a pair of high dollar connecting rods. They only last so many passes and there's not much you can do with em. Bonus is they fit regular conduit on the small end for the towels for an easy load.

I wanted a double paper towel holder in my garage (1 roll paper towels, 1 roll shop towels) so I built one out of left over rough sawn pine that my garage is sided in. I also make paper towel holders out of horse shoes and re-bar that I sell in my horse shoe art business.

I have one that looks like this:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001ASMLB2/?tag=atomicindus08-20

I also have the matching toilet paper holder.

$90 for a paper towel holder! :shocking::lol_hitti

It's only temporary, unless it works!

I thought about making one from spare wood and getting a dial rod.. also though of the gladiator one but honestly probably going to get this one:

All good reviews, simple, cheap and does the job. Probably mount it under my wood cabinet, easy peasy!

This is the exact same paper towel holder that I have. I HATE those ones with just a dowel, because they don't have any grip to the towels, making them hard to rip on occassion. This one is simple and works flawlessly. Mounted under the overhead storage above my bench.

Here's what I did after seeing a post earlier in this thread. I feed the towel from the back so I can put my left arm against the roll when I'm ready to tear some off. I buy the bulk paper towels from Sam's so a case will last me a long time. This turns out to be much more cost effective.

We used to run a length of cable over the stalls onboard ship then slide **** paper over it. If you ran out there were at least 3 more rolls above you. If you needed more then you hollered for someone to send you a roll from another stall.

You could use cable and rig up several.

It's funny that you say that about the dowel.. I actually can't even use the original idea of building one with a dowel because I have two cabinets that are about 14" apart and now looking at it after I mounted it, there would be no way for me to pull the dowel rod out and then change the paper roll of paper towels...lol

One question for you on the amazon one since you have it and I didn't want to waste $6 if it doesn't work but do the blue shop paper towels fit on it fine? I know some rolls are a little bit heavier and larger than your charmin kitchen paper towels.

Agreed on $90 for a paper towel holder... I guess if I had money to burn but I can think of $90 better spent on 200 other things...lol

Thanks,
-Nigel
